John Klein est journaliste. Avec sa femme, il vient de trouver la maison de leurs rêves. Sur le chemin du retour, alors qu'ils sont euphoriques, ils ont un accident de voiture. Juste après, la femme de John lui révèle qu'elle a eu une hallucination terrifiante mettant en scène une silhouette étrange. Malheureusement, elle décède peu de temps après.
