En Angleterre, au début du XIXe siècle. Le docteur Valentine Brown est appelé sous les drapeaux. Il laisse derrière lui la femme qui l'aime, Phoebe Throssel, avant même d'avoir pu s'unir à elle par les liens du mariage. La guerre contre Napoléon le retient au loin durant dix ans.
