Spent most of his childhood in Hawaii, where his father used to sing with a group known as The Society of Seven. In the late 1970s, his family settled in the Bay Area in California. Returned to the Philippines in 1982 to build a career in singing; that same year, released his first album Martin...Take One. Martin After Dark, his television show which aired for almost a decade from 1988 to 1998, won him Star Awards' Best Celebrity Talk Show Host for 3 consecutive years, from 1989 to 1991, and also in 1993, 1994, and 1996. Was named the Best Male Singer and Star of the Year in 1988 by The Honolulu Adviser. Bagged the Best Interpreter for a Composition Award at the Abu Golden Kite Awards in 1990. Won the Entertainer of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Aliw Awards Foundation Hall of Fame in 2006.
