Trivia: Veteran character actor Joe Don Baker has been playing rugged good ol' boys since his uncredited role in Cool Hand Luke in 1967. Born in Texas, his Southern drawl and ample proportions made him suitable to play countless numbers of simple-minded sheriffs, cops, and detectives in everything from big-budget blockbusters to low-grade action movies, although he more often appeared in the latter. On TV in the '60s, he guest starred on Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and Mission: Impossible before starring in his own show, the short-lived detective series Eischied. On the big screen, he played the drifter in Sam Peckinpah's Junior Bonner in 1972. He same year he made the "hicksploitation" classic Walking Tall, followed by Charley Varrick, Golden Needles, Framed, and plenty of other poorly made action thrillers that have since gained a small but appreciative audience on home video. The best example is 1975 crime flick Mitchell, which was featured on an important transitional episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Baker plays the titular slob detective who goes after drug dealers while drinking a lot of Schlitz malt liquor and eating pork rinds. After this movie, he became something of a legendary figure to a small but loyal fan base, and his persona as a lovable rascal was fixed for the next few decades. In the '80s he appeared in bad comedies (Fletch, Leonard, Part 6) as well as bad action thrillers (Final Justice, Getting Even). In 1989, he returned to television to play acting chief Tom Dugan on In the Heat of the Night and made small appearances in films, like the police chief who drinks Pepto-Bismol in Cape Fear (1991). He did branch out a little in the '90s to play Senator Joseph McCarthy in the made-for-TV movie Citizen Cohn as well as Winona Ryder's yuppie dad in Reality Bites. His later accomplishments include three James Bond appearances, first in Living Daylights as a bad guy, then in Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies as good guy Jack Wade. He returned to his stereotypical roots playing white-trash slobs as Richie's trailer park dad in Mars Attacks! and in an uncredited role in Joe Dirt. In 2003, he appeared with veterans Martin Landau, Martin Sheen, and Edward Asner in The Commisson.

Trivia: Filmgoers who have attributed the stardom of actress Sondra Locke to the "sponsorship" of her onetime soulmate Clint Eastwood are suffering from the dreaded SMS, or Short Memory Syndrome. These worthies have forgotten that Locke was Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of a suicidal small-town girl in Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968) while Eastwood was still grinding out spaghetti westerns. It is true that Locke's flagging screen career was regenerated by her appearance in Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales. It is also probable that she would not have been afforded the opportunity to play everything from supercilious heiresses (Broncho Billy) to foul-mouthed Federal witnesses (The Gauntlet) to vengeful murderers (Sudden Impact) without Eastwood's support and encouragement. The acrimonious "palimony" suit that followed the breakup of Locke and Eastwood served only to perpetuate the myth that Locke was a blonde nonentity coasting on the reputation of her live-in lover. That such a notion is idiotic has been proven by Sondra Locke's artistic achievements as director of such low-profile theatrical features as Ratboy (1990) and Impulse (1990) and such TVers as Death in Small Doses (1995).

Trivia: Though he spoke most of his movie dialogue in a slow Western drawl, actor Slim Pickens was a pure-bred California boy. An expert rider from the age of four, Pickens was performing in rodeos at 12. Three years later, he quit school to become a full-time equestrian and bull wrangler, eventually becoming the highest-paid rodeo clown in show business. In films since 1950's Rocky Mountain, Pickens specialized in Westerns (what a surprise), appearing as the comic sidekick of Republic cowboy star Rex Allen. By the end of the 1950s, Pickens had gained so much extra poundage that he practically grew out of his nickname. Generally cast in boisterous comedy roles, Pickens was also an effectively odious villain in 1966's An Eye for an Eye, starting the film off with a jolt by shooting a baby in its crib. In 1963, director Stanley Kubrick handed Pickens his greatest role: honcho bomber pilot "King" Kong in Dr. Strangelove. One of the most unforgettable of all cinematic images is the sight of Pickens straddling a nuclear bomb and "riding" it to its target, whooping and hollering all the way down. Almost as good was Pickens' performance as Harvey Korman's henchman in Mel Brooks' bawdy Western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974). Slim Pickens was also kept busy on television, with numerous guest shots and regular roles in the TV series The Legend of Custer, B.J. and the Bear, and Filthy Rich.

Trivia: A longtime character actor who uniquely parlayed his job as a newspaper delivery man into a successful acting career, Dennis Fimple never failed to end his daily route by dropping a free newspaper and headshot at the office of General Services Studios' casting director. The gamble paid off, and the casting director eventually offered young Fimple a series of small roles in Petticoat Junction. Born to an electrician and beautician in Ventura, CA, and raised in nearby Taft, the aspiring young actor decided to pursue a career on stage and screen after portraying Tom Sawyer in a junior high school play. Enchanted with his ability to goof off on-stage without getting into trouble, Fimple would eventually earn a scholarship to San Jose State and major in speech and drama in addition to earning his teaching credential. Residing in the San Francisco Bay area and working in a Cheetos factory by day, the nighttime found the tireless Fimple appearing in dinner theaters. Realizing that in order to make it, a relocation was in order, Fimple packed his bags for Hollywood with initially discouraging results. A teacher by day and newspaper delivery man by night, Fimple would follow appearances in Petticoat Junction with roles in such popular small-screen series as Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and Here Come the Brides. Roles in such features as Cactus in the Snow (1970) and Truck Stop Women (1974) followed shortly thereafter, and appearances in the following year's The Apple Dumpling Gang and the remake of King Kong (1976) found the rugged-looking actor's face gaining increasing exposure. Often cast as rough-and-tumble rural folk, Fimple remained a staple of television and film well into the new millennium. Following his final appearance in horror-rocker Rob Zombie's throwback fright-fest House of 1000 Corpses, Fimple died of natural causes at his Frazier Park, CA, home. He was 61.

Trivia: Pasty-faced American actor John Davis Chandler played his first unregenerate punk in 1961's The Young Savages. Chandler's subsequent unsavory screen characters included the implicitly incestuous Jimmy Hammond in Sam Peckinpah's Ride the High Country (1961) and the title role in Mad Dog Coll (1961). From time to time he has attempted sympathetic characterizations, billing himself as John Chandler. Though he periodically left show business for other lines of work, John Davis Chandler was still showing up in films and on TV into the late '70s.
