Actor Frank Lovejoy was linked to show business before he was even born; his father was a salesman for the Pathe Film studio. After working as a Wall Street page, Lovejoy attended NYU, then acted in stock companies. He made his first Broadway appearance in 1934's Judgment Day. One of the busiest "Golden Age" radio actors, Lovejoy was heard in hundreds of soap operas, mystery programs and dramatic anthologies: from 1950 through 1952, he starred in the weekly radio crime drama Nightbeat. After his 1948 film debut in Black Bart, Lovejoy specialized in tough, cynical roles, such as the leading character in I Was a Communist For the FBI. From 1957 through 1959, he starred in the TV private eye series Meet McGraw. Frank Lovejoy died of a heart attack while appearing in a New Jersey production of The Best Man with his actress wife Joan Banks.

                          Trivia:
Supporting and occasional lead actor Jan Merlin made his debut playing Roger Manning in the sci-fi-adventure television series Tom Corbett, Space Cadet (1950). He made his first film appearances in 1955 in such films as Six Bridges to Cross and thereafter appeared frequently in Westerns or sci-fi films through the late '60s. During the '70s, his film career was sporadic as Merlin focused his energies on writing for the soap opera Another World, winning two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Writing in the process.

                          Trivia:
From 1939 until his death in 1960, gangly, balding Douglas Spencer could be spotted in unbilled film roles as doctors and reporters. By the early '50s, Spencer had graduated to supporting parts, often in films with a science fiction or fantasy theme. One of his lengthier assignments was Simms, the seance-busting reporter in Houdini (1953). Douglas Spencer's best-ever film role was bespectacled reporter Ned "Scotty" Scott in the 1951 sci-fi classic The Thing, wherein he closed the film with the immortal cautionary words "Keep watching the skies!"

                          Trivia:
Busy character actor Frank Ferguson was able to parlay his pinched facial features, his fussy little moustache, and his bellows-like voice for a vast array of characterizations. Ferguson was equally effective as a hen-pecked husband, stern military leader, irascible neighbor, merciless employer, crooked sheriff, and barbershop hanger-on. He made his inaugural film appearance in Father is a Prince (1940) and was last seen on the big screen in The Great Sioux Massacre (1965). Ferguson proved himself an above-average actor by successfully pulling off the treacly scene in The Babe Ruth Story (1948) in which Babe (William Bendix) says "Hi, kid" to Ferguson's crippled son--whereupon the boy suddenly stands up and walks! Among Franklin Ferguson's hundreds of TV appearances were regular stints on the children's series My Friend Flicka (1956) and the nighttime soap opera Peyton Place (1964-68).

                          Trivia:
The face of American actor Myron Healey was not in and of itself villainous. But whenever Healey narrowed his eyes and widened that countenance into a you-know-what-eating grin and exposed those pointed ivories, the audience knew that he was about to rob a bank, hold up a stagecoach, or burn out a homesteader, which he did with regularity after entering films in the postwar years. Still, Healey could temper his villainy with a marvelous sense of humor: for example, his hilarious adlibs while appearing in stock badguy roles in such TV series as Annie Oakley and Gene Autry. With 1949's Colorado Ambush Healey broadened his talents to include screenwriting. Usually heading the supporting cast, Myron Healey was awarded a bonafide lead role in the 1962 horror film Varan the Unbelievable (a Japanese film, with scattered English-language sequences), though even here he seemed poised to stab the titular monster in the back at any moment.

                          Trivia:
The younger brother of film star Robert Mitchum, American actor John Mitchum shared his family's Depression-era travails before striking out on his own. As brother Robert's star ascended in the mid '40s, John remained his elder sibling's boon companion, severest critic and drinking buddy. In later years, John was a convivial anecdotal source for books and articles about Bob, each reminiscense becoming more colorful as it was repeated for the next interview. After holding down a variety of jobs, John decided to give acting a try as a result of hearing Bob's tales of Hollywood revelry; too heavyset to be a leading man, John became a reliable character actor, usually in military or western roles. He frequently had small parts in his brother's starring films, notably One Minute to Zero (1951) and The Way West (1967). Most of John's movie work was done outside Robert's orbit, however, in such films as Cattle King (1963) and Paint Your Wagon (1970). Perhaps John Mitchum's best screen role was as Goering in the 1962 biopic Hitler; he may have been utterly opposed ideologically to the late German field marshal, but John certainly filled the costume.

                          Trivia:
Actor Stanley Andrews moved from the stage to the movies in the mid 1930s, where at first he was typed in steadfast, authoritative roles. The tall, mustachioed Adrews became familiar to regular moviegoers in a string of performances as ship's captains, doctors, executives, military officials and construction supervisors. By the early 1950s, Andrews had broadened his range to include grizzled old western prospectors and ageing sheriffs. This led to his most lasting contribution to the entertainment world: the role of the Old Ranger on the long-running syndicated TV series Death Valley Days. Beginning in 1952, Andrews introduced each DVD episode, doing double duty as commercial pitchman for 20 Mule Team Borax; he also became a goodwill ambassador for the program and its sponsor, showing up at county fairs, supermarket openings and charity telethons. Stanley Andrews continued to portray the Old Ranger until 1963, when the US Borax company decided to alter its corporate image with a younger spokesperson -- a 51-year-old "sprout" named Ronald Reagan.

                          Trivia:
In films from 1929, mustachioed, businesslike actor Wheaton Chambers could frequently be found in serials, including Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1939), The Adventures of Red Ryder (1940), The Purple Monster Strikes (1945) and The Crimson Ghost (1946). In bigger budgeted pictures, he played more than his share of bailiffs, guards and desk clerks. In the 1951 sci-fi masterpiece The Day the Earth Stood Still, Chambers plays the jeweller who appraises Klaatu's (Michael Rennie) extraterrestrial diamonds. When he was afforded screen billing, which wasn't often, Wheaton Chambers preferred to be identified as J. Wheaton Chambers.

                          Trivia:
Although not as remembered as Yakima Canutt or even Cliff Lyons, brawny George DeNormand became one of the founding fathers of modern movie stunt work. In films from the early '30s, DeNormand performed stunts and played bit roles in scores of action thrillers, B-Westerns, and serials, working mostly for that memorable factory of thrills, Republic Pictures. His career lasted well into the television era and he was especially visible on such shows as The Cisco Kid, Range Rider, and Sky King. Married to writer/director Wanda Tuchock (1898-1985), DeNormand spent his last years at the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA.

                          Trivia:
The youngest son of actor Bernard Gorcey, David Gorcey reached Broadway at the tender age of 14 when he was cast in Sidney Kingsley's Dead End. During the early stages of production, David secured a role in the play for his older brother Leo. It was Leo who subsequently rose to stardom, while the quieter, self-effacing David seemed content to remain a background player. After making his film debut in 1938, David was cast in Universal's "Little Tough Guys" series, an offshoot of Warners' Dead End Kids films, which of course spotlighted brother Leo. When Leo moved to Monogram's East Side Kids David went along in the featured role of Pee-wee. After serving in the military, David rejoined Leo at Monogram, appearing as Chuck in the Bowery Boys series beginning in 1946. Evidently to avoid accusations of nepotism, David adopted his mother's maiden name of Condon for billing purposes. The younger Gorcey outlasted Leo as a Bowery Boy, remaining with the series until its final entry, 1958's In the Money. During this period, he occasionally accepted minor roles at other studios, usually playing a newsboy (most amusingly in 1950's Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion). David Gorcey became a minister after retiring from films, devoting his time and energy to anti-drug programs for LA ghetto youths.
