Let the Experiment Be Made

Season 1, Episode 1

Chronicling the life and achievements of America's revolutionary genius in his own words (plus those of a parade of historians). Part 1: "Let the Experiment Be Made," charts Franklin's first 47 years (he was born in 1706), a period that saw the birth of the Enlightenment. Franklin took it to heart, writing aphorisms based on it in his "Poor Richard's Almanack" and making life easier for his fellow Philadelphians by thinking up such things as public libraries and a volunteer fire department. Then there was electricity. Richard Easton plays Franklin (Dylan Baker plays a younger Franklin).

Richard Easton (Actor) .. Benjamin Franklin
Born: March 22, 1933
Trivia: Classically trained actor Richard Easton honed his most enduring reputation as a theatrical performer. A native of Montréal, Québec, Easton grew up as the son of a civil engineer and began prolific stage work in the late '40s in dozens of productions, including King Lear, Measure for Measure, Othello, and many other fixtures from the classical repertoire, with (as that brief list indicates) the strongest emphasis on Shakespeare. Various ensembles with which the thespian became affiliated over the years included the Stratford Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Association of Performing Artists' Repertory Company. Easton also did extensive television work in Great Britain, with a particularly memorable run as Captain Stapley on Doctor Who, then placed a heightened emphasis on features in the late '80s; the actor's cinematic accomplishments include teaming up with fellow Shakespeare veteran Kenneth Branagh twice, for Henry V (1989) and Dead Again (1991); starring opposite Sean Connery and F. Murray Abraham in Gus Van Sant's Finding Forrester (2000); and playing Howard Givings in Sam Mendes' period drama of 1950s suburban dysfunction, Revolutionary Road (2008).
Dylan Baker (Actor) .. Franklin as a young man
Born: October 07, 1959
Birthplace: Syracuse, New York, United States
Trivia: Born to a pair of lawyers in Syracuse, NY, and raised in nearby Lynchburg, Dylan Baker attended Georgetown Prep and William and Mary College before earning his B.F.A. at Southern Methodist University, where his passion for acting was ignited with numerous stage roles. Later refining his talents at Yale's School of Drama, Baker would turn professional with big screen roles in movies like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Delirious (1991), and Love Potion No. 9 (1992). The mid-'90s found the increasingly busy actor dividing his time between stage, screen, and television, and Baker would soon wed actress Becky Ann Baker (the couple later appeared together in Woody Allen's Celebrity [1998]). A successful stage performance of La Bete found Baker nominated for Tony and Drama Desk Awards, and Baker and his wife continued to develop a close association with New York's Drama Department theater troupe. Following his remarkable performance in Happiness, Baker would appear in films such as Random Hearts, The Cell, and Thirteen Days (all 2000). As the 2000's unfolded, Baker would remain an active force on screen, appearing in movies like The Tailor of Panama, and Along Came a Spider, and on TV shows like 24, Damages, and Hawaii Five-O.
Blair Brown (Actor) .. Jane Mecon
Born: April 23, 1947
Birthplace: Washington, District of Columbia, United States
Trivia: Trained at the National Theatre School of Canada, Blair Brown distinguished herself as one of the most versatile young actresses at the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival. Shortly after her off-Broadway debut in A Comedy of Errors, Brown made her first, fleeting film appearance as Miss Farranti in The Paper Chase (1973); her "official" starring bow in films came four years later with The Choirboys. Never one to accept roles merely for their box-office potential, Brown has agreed to co-star in chancy film projects with such offbeat screen personalities as Paul Simon (One Trick Pony), John Belushi (Continental Divide), Mark Harmon (Stealing Home), and Richard Jordan (A Flash of Green), who was also her first husband. A frequent visitor to television, Brown has starred in several TV-movies, most notably as Jackie in 1983's Kennedy. She also essayed the title character in the "succès d'estime" seriocomedy series The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd (1987-1991) which after its network cancellation was kept alive on cable by a small but fervent coterie of fans. While Molly Dodd was on hiatus in 1989, Blair Brown made her first Broadway appearance in Secret Rapture. Though she never became an A-list star, she worked steadily on both the big and small screen. Highlights include her Gertrude opposite Campbell Scott in a 2000 version of Hamlet, Lars Von Trier's 2003 drama Dogville, and a key role in the 2008 sci-fi series Fringe.
Matthew Bennett (Actor) .. John Hughes
Born: April 09, 1968
Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Kathleen Chalfant (Actor) .. Silence Dogood
Born: January 14, 1945
Birthplace: San Francisco, California
Anthony Cochran (Actor) .. George III
John Curless (Actor) .. William Strahan
Jennifer Dundas (Actor) .. Catherine Ray
Born: January 14, 1971
Trivia: Actress Jennifer Dundas made her debut playing Gloria Vanderbilt as a child in the NBC miniseries Little Gloria, Happy at Last. She entered feature films playing little sister Lilli in The Hotel New Hampshire (1984). In addition to her continuing career in film, Dundas has a busy stage career and has performed with various theater companies and at the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Peter Gerety (Actor) .. Joseph Galloway
Born: May 17, 1940
Birthplace: Providence, Rhode Island
Trivia: A burly, thickset, and occasionally scruffy character actor with a domineering and imposing presence, Peter Gerety often accepted roles as ordinary working-class stiffs, judges, or inner-city law officers. A performer with equal footing in film and on the stage, Gerety took his premier onscreen bow during the early '80s but first began drawing substantial attention over a decade later. Gerety remains best known for his multi-season portrayal (1996-1999) of Detective Stuart Gharty on the cop drama Homicide: Life on the Street. He also played the recurring role of Judge Daniel Phelan on another Baltimore-set crime series, The Wire (2002-2008). Big-screen projects include Sleepers (1996), K-PAX (2001), Syriana (2005), Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Leatherheads (2008), and Public Enemies (2009).
