Was born into a family of European and African descent. Was awarded a Lady Rothermere Drama Award and Leverhulme scholarship to study at the Drama Centre London. After graduation, began a classical stage career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and performed in both Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice in 2011, the latter opposite Patrick Stewart as Shylock. Starred in Blackta, a play about the difficulties facing black actors, at the Young Vic Theatre in London in 2012. Attended a boot camp with his Musketeer co-stars before production started, to train to ride horses and fence. From 2014 has played the role of Porthos, one of 'The Musketeers', a series based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. Was injured in a road accident caused by a drink-driver in 2016, but has recovered well enough to resume performing on stage and screen.
