Made his MLB debut in June 2003 with the Florida Marlins at 20 years old, and hit a walk-off home run in his first game. Won a World Series with Florida in his rookie season. Became a babalao in the Santeria religion after the 2006 season. Was traded to the Detroit Tigers, along with Dontrelle Willis, before the 2008 season after four All-Star seasons in Florida. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria had a carrying case built for a religious symbol of Cabrera's, a carved skull on a 4-foot stick. In 2012, became the first player to win the Triple Crown since the Boston Red Sox's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.
