John Ashley (Actor) .. Johnny Bruder
Born: December 25, 1934
Died: October 04, 1997
Trivia: John Ashley should be a familiar name and face to anyone who attended a drive-in double feature in the 1950s. Ashley starred or co-starred in such passion-pit fodder as Hot Rod Gang (1958), How to Make a Monster (1958), Frankenstein's Daughter (1959) and High School Caesar (1960). In 1961, Ashley co-starred with future Flipper leading man Brian Kelly in the short-lived TV action series Straightaway. Ashley switched his base of operations to the Philippines in the 1960s and 1970s, frequently wearing several hats as actor, producer, director and scriptwriter. Films like Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969) may not have been cited at the annual Oscar ceremonies, but they paid the bills many times over for the peripatetic Ashley. In the 1980s, Ashley hooked up with television producer Stephen J. Cannell to work on such series as The A-Team. He later teamed with Frank Lupo to executive or co-executive produce such series as Walker, Texas Ranger (1983), Werewolf (1987) and Something is Out There (1988). In the mid-'90s, Ashley began working as an in-house producer for Tri-Star Television. On October 4, 1997, John Ashley was working on the film Scarred City in New York, when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Trivia: White-haired, dignified, avuncular Swiss-born character actor Felix Locher (pronounced "Lo-Shay") didn't begin acting until the age of 73, completely on a whim and through an accident of fate. The father of 1940s action star Jon Hall (born Charles Locher), Felix Locher had made his living in a multitude of capacities for much of his adult life, including inventor (he held 100 copyrights and patents relating to a unique mapping system that he used when lecturing military officers) and salesman (principally of insurance). He chanced to visit his son while the latter was preparing for the movie Hell Ship Mutiny (1957) and, seeing the script, remarked that he would be perfect to play the elderly Tahitian chief. The elder Locher not only believed that he looked the part but also that he knew how to play it, having lived in Tahiti. His son dismissed the idea, pointing out that his father had never acted, much less done anything else in front of a camera; but then he was spotted by the director of the movie, who decided that the dignified, well-spoken 73-year-old would, in fact, be perfect for the chief. Following that screen debut, Locher spent the next couple of years reading plays and doing scenes in his agent's office, and gradually started attending auditions. He got small parts on Have Gun Will Travel, The Loretta Young Show, and movies, including the ultra low-budget horror film Frankenstein's Daughter. Later that same year, Locher got the biggest movie part of his career, a Basque leader in the drama Thunder in the Sun (1959) starring Susan Hayward and Jeff Chandler. Locher remained busy on television and in movies into the '60s, appearing in more than 30 productions, and, ironically, was active for several years after his son's career had ended. His most well-remembered roles were in Frankenstein's Daughter, portraying the loving scientist uncle of the heroine, and in the second season Star Trek episode "The Deadly Years," portraying the prematurely aged and senile expedition leader Robert Johnson. Locher died in 1969 at the age of 87.

Trivia: The career of American character actor Robert Dix (son of leading man Richard Dix) has embraced both British and Hollywood productions since 1955. Many of Dix's earliest appearances were in swashbucklers and Westerns; among his larger roles was Frank James in 1960's Young Jesse James. He later showed up in low-budget cycle flicks bearing such titles as Satan's Sadists, Rebel Rousers, and Cain's Cutthroats. In 1970, Robert Dix penned the screenplay for the self-explanatory melodrama Five Bloody Graves.

Trivia: Burly and athletic actor George Barrows seldom worried about being recognized on the street because he spent much of his long, busy career dressed up in a gorilla suit. Barrows created his first one shortly after doubling for Johnny Weismuller in Tarzan and His Mate (1934). When not performing in the gorilla suit himself, he rented it out to others. In one film, Robot Monster (1953), he put a diving helmet over his gorilla head to play a space alien. Other films in which Barrows played great apes include Gorilla at Large (1954), The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966), and Hillbillies in the Haunted House (1967). He began performing professionally as a child, but his film career quickly petered out as his size increased. He grew to be a such a large man that after he returned to film in Cleopatra (1934) he was often relegated to playing heavies and, of course, gorillas. In addition to film work, Barrows frequently guest starred on television. He also appeared in made-for-TV films, such as The President's Plane Is Missing (1971) and Donner Pass: The Road to Survival (1978).
