Trivia: While a prolific screen presence from the late-'60s onward, Barbara Hershey did not truly attain star status until two decades later, finally blossoming to become one of the most acclaimed American actresses of her generation. Born Barbara Herzstein on February 5, 1948, in Hollywood, CA, she studied drama during high school and in 1965 made her professional debut in the teen television romp Gidget. From 1966 to 1967, she was a regular on the series The Monroes and subsequently guest starred in a number of other programs. Hershey made her film bow in 1968's With Six You Get Eggroll, followed by the Western Heaven With a Gun and Last Summer. After a number of other lesser projects, she starred as the title heroine in 1972's Boxcar Bertha, the first major theatrical release from a then-unknown Martin Scorsese. David Carradine, Hershey's onscreen partner in crime, became her offscreen companion as well. Carradine directed them both in Americana (filmed in 1973 but not shown until eight years later), and together they had a child, Free.In another nod to the counterculture, Hershey rechristened herself "Barbara Seagull" and traveled to the Netherlands to film the 1973 drama Angela, winning Best Actress honors for her work at the Berlin Film Festival. Still, box-office success continued to elude her, and her resumé remained littered with undistinguished projects including the 1974 heist drama Diamonds, the 1976 comedy A Choice of Weapons, and the Western The Last Hard Men. By 1977, Hershey -- having dropped the "Seagull" surname -- turned to television, where she appeared in the Irwin Allen disaster production Flood! as well as the miniseries A Man Called Intrepid and the 1979-1980 weekly program From Here to Eternity. The 1980 comedy The Stunt Man, actually shot two years earlier, marked Hershey's return to feature films, and was followed by 1981's Take This Job and Shove It and the 1982 horror picture The Entity. By this point, Hershey -- once viewed as a rising star -- had been largely written off by the Hollywood powers-that-be. However, in 1983, she accepted a small role in Philip Kaufman's acclaimed The Right Stuff which garnered her considerable notice. She followed it with another small but pivotal role in Barry Levinson's 1984 baseball fable The Natural, and after a pair of well-regarded television projects -- the 1985 Errol Flynn bio My Wicked, Wicked Ways and 1986's Passion Flower -- Hershey's name was back on the map. After years of low-budget and low-brow projects, suddenly she was a fixture of high-profile features including Woody Allen's masterful 1986 effort Hannah and Her Sisters, David Anspaugh's Hoosiers, and Levinson's 1987 comedy Tin Men. Also in 1987, Hershey's turn in Andrei Konchalovsky's Shy People won Best Actress honors at the Cannes Film Festival, an award she again took home the following year for her performance in Chris Menges' A World Apart.Hershey also excelled in more mainstream affairs, appearing opposite Bette Midler in the weeper Beaches. In 1988, she and Scorsese reunited for the first time since Boxcar Bertha in The Last Temptation of Christ, in which she appeared as Mary Magdalene, winning a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. In 1990, Hershey returned to television to star in the movie A Killing in a Small Town, for which she won an Emmy. Back in the movies, she remained noted for her performances in offbeat fare like 1990's Tune in Tomorrow, 1993's Falling Down, and 1996's The Pallbearer. For her supporting performance in Jane Campion's 1996 adaptation of The Portrait of a Lady, Hershey also earned an Academy Award nomination. In 1998, the actress won further praise for her role as Kris Kristofferson's bohemian wife in A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries. The same year, she appeared as a struggling actress in Amos Poe's Frogs for Snakes, and then went on to play Bruce Willis' wife in the highly anticipated 1999 adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. She appeared in the drama Lantana in 2001, and had major parts in 11:14 and Paradise. She spent a few years away from the spotlight, but in 2007 she returned in Love Comes Lately and The Bird Can't Fly. She appeared as the title character in 2008's Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, and played the mother to Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

Trivia: Perky, red-haired actress Bonnie Franklin is best remembered for playing plucky single mom Ann Romano on the long-running sitcom One Day at a Time (1975-1984). Franklin began her acting career at age 12 when she appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock made-for-television movie The Wrong Man in 1956; that year she also appeared in a feature-film episode of the Kettle family saga, The Kettles in the Ozarks. Through the '60s, Franklin only appeared a couple of times as a guest star on television series such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. While working on her sitcom, Franklin occasionally appeared in television movies. After the series' demise, her television work became sporadic, and by the early '90s, she had left the medium altogether, though Franklin continued acting in regional theater and in cross-country tours of plays, occasionally returning to the screen for small appearances. Franklin reuinted with her One Day at a Time daughter Valerie Bertinelli in an episode of Hot in Cleveland in 2011, but her return to acting was short-lived. After announcing she had pancreatic cancer in 2012, Franklin passed away due to complications from the disease in 2013 at the age of 69.

Trivia: Amid the all-too-common stories of child performers who never made a happy transition to adult lives and careers, Beverly Washburn's career stands as one of the great success stories. Born in Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day 1943, she made her uncredited screen debut in 1950, at age six, as the first victim of a plague-carrier in the thriller The Killer That Stalked New York. Even at that early age, she had a screen magnetism that shone through to audiences (and makes the death of her character, midway through the movie, a highly emotional moment for the viewer, despite taking place off-screen). The following year, she turned up (once more uncredited) playing the little girl who unknowingly entertains two visitors from the center of the earth in the feature film Superman and the Mole Men (1951), which introduced George Reeves in the role of Superman, and which was later re-edited into the two-part Adventures of Superman episode The Unknown People. She also had one great scene with James Stewart in Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), and appeared in small, uncredited roles in George Stevens' Shane (1953) and Edward Dmytryk's The Juggler (1953), starring Kirk Douglas, which was notable as the first Hollywood film shot in Israel. The mid-'50s saw a sharp downturn in film production and mass layoffs at most of the studios, and for the next five years, Washburn primarily worked in television, on series as different as Dragnet and The Loretta Young Show -- where the young actress was part of the stock company for both series -- and The Jack Benny Show. Apart from being a very quick study and an appealing child, Washburn was also popular with producers and directors for her ability to cry on cue, which eliminated the need for many a retake. Her range and ability to memorize lines -- and not just her own, but those of the performers around her -- allowed her to take roles on numerous anthology shows and guest spots on series such as Father Knows Best, Fury, and Leave It to Beaver, and she was also one of the regular cast members on an earlier Barbara Billingsley series called Professional Father. In 1957, she returned to feature films by way of Walt Disney in the movie Old Yeller, playing Lisbeth Searcy, but a lot of her work remained confined to television, across a whole range of series, including anthology series, comedies, westerns, dramas, and crime thrillers, plus appearing as a sketch player in The Hollywood Palace, one of the live variety shows of the early/middle '60s.Washburn was unable to professionally break stride as she reached her early twenties, owing to her family's financial situation. Her father contracted a serious illness in the early '60s, and in addition to being unable to work, he required expensive medical treatments. Washburn actually went to court -- successfully -- to get the trust fund money her parents had started to put aside for her from age six released, in order to pay for her father's treatments. She remained busy throughout the 1960s, and among the many series in which she turned up was the original Star Trek. Fans will likely remember Washburn as Lieutenant Galway, the luckless crewmember who succumbs to the old-age-like radiation sickness encountered on planet Gamma Hydra 2 in the episode "The Deadly Years" -- though it must be conceded that the 20-second century hairdo she was forced to wear in that episode did not become her (making her look like a young Alice Ghostley) She also appeared in episodes of The Streets of San Francisco and Scarecrow and Mrs. King and was in the 2003 pilot to Las Vegas. Washburn was still working in 2009, and, indeed, in that decade had found herself participating in cult celebrations of one of the stranger feature films in which she ever appeared, Jack Hill's Spider Baby (1964).
