When Wong was seven years of age, his parents divorced, and he moved with his mother to California, settling near Yosemite. In 1981, Wong graduated from Mariposa County High School, and that fall enrolled at Santa Monica City College. Wong supported himself as a photographer and as a dancer (appearing in rock videos with David Bowie, Donna Summer, and Janet Jackson, among others) before scoring his first screen roles in 1985, appearing in a Hong Kong musical called Ge wu sheng ping (aka Musical Dancer) and in a screen adaptation of James Clavell's best-seller Tai-Pan. A number of undistinguished television and film roles followed, but Wong began breaking into better roles in 1989, when he made a memorable guest appearance on the drama series 21 Jump Street and won a leading role in Wayne Wang's acclaimed independent romantic comedy Eat a Bowl of Tea. Supporting roles in China Cry and New Jack City were to follow, and Wong found himself working with Wayne Wang again when he was cast in a meaty role in the film adaptation of Amy Tan's best-selling novel The Joy Luck Club. Wong finally scored a high-profile breakthrough role in 1994, when he was cast in the leading role in the made-for-TV movie Vanishing Son, in which he played a Chinese political activist exiled in America. Trivia: Stories abound about the length to which American character player/writer Jonathan Sadowski ventured to pay his dues as an aspiring Hollywood talent and gain that elusive "in" to the club of the elite. The then-hopeful took a job at the Sunset Boulevard diner called The Griddle Café; he and fellow server/screenwriting partner Ben Branstrader subsequently authored a script called "This Man Smith," and pitched it, tableside, to producer J.C. Spink (of The Ring and Monster-in-Law fame) when the mogul came in for a bite in 2005. Spink reportedly signed the young men on the spot.Sadowski cut his acting chops far more quickly than he received onscreen writing credit, however, and the performer (who had already enjoyed a favorable run on American Dreams prior to his impromptu meeting with Spink) continued to make appearances in Hollywood A-list features over the next several years. These included Paul in She's the Man (2006), director Andy Fickman's teen comic update of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Trey in the Bruce Willis actioner Live Free or Die Hard (2007). After witnessing the ease with which his friends found commercial work, the onetime baseball hopeful opted to eschew concrete pouring in favor of being in front of the cameras. Though success was by no means immediate, it wasn't long before Crawford met actress Sunny Mabrey while working in a local theater. After finding out the two grew up a mere 20 minutes from one another, the aspiring actors became inseparable and eventually engaged. By Crawford's account, it was the exact day that he decided to let rejection roll down his back that he was offered a substantial role in the independent drama Gas Station Jesus (2001). After appearing in the I Am Legend-inspired horror-thriller One Blood Planet that same year, Crawford's newfound success found him landing roles in A Walk to Remember and Swimfan before turning up alongside Al Pacino in 2003's The Recruit.
