Competed as an amateur boxer as a teenager. Received the nickname Chespirito, which translates to "Little Shakespeare," from Mexican writer and director Agustin P. Delgado. Collaborated with Mario Moreno, also known as Cantinflas, on an unreleased television series in 1966. Created the sketch comedy character El Chapulin Colorado while writing and starring in his 1970 television series Chespirito. Was romantically involved with his El Chapulin Colorado co-star Florinda Meza (who played Doña Florinda) for 27 years before marrying her in 2004. Wrote, produced and starred in the 1992 play 11 and 12, which set a record for the country of Mexico after staging more than 3,200 performances in over 30 different cities.
