Trivia: Joined the British Army in 1953 (commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers), promoted to Lieutenant in 1954. Upon leaving in 1956, continues to suffer from tinnitus, due to witnessing a mortar round explosion. Joined the cast of Coronation Street in the role of Ken Barlow in 1960. Has written about his interest in astrology in his autobiography, and was photographed practising Druid rituals in the 1970s. Published his first autobiography Ken and Me in 1993. Won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards, 1999. Awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2001, in the Queen's Honours List. Awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Chester, in recognition of his contribution to television, March 2007. His seond autobiography Soul on the Street was published in 2008 and reveals his belief in the afterlife. His memoir 50 Years on the Street: My Life with Ken Barlow was published in 2010, to coincide with his fiftieth year playing Ken. His book Life and Soul: How to Live a Long and Healthy Life was released in 2018. Is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving television actor in a continuous role (as of March 2018).

Trivia: Left school at 15 and worked as a telegraphist in the Post Office, learning shorthand and typing in order to pass her Civil Service exams. Made her professional stage debut in 1962 at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre in The Boyfriend. Cut an LP for Philips Records called On the Street Where I Live in 1973. Won Best Actress at both the TV Times and Oracle Teletext awards in 1989. Was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in 2004 for her services to Coronation Street, and Best Onscreen Partnership at the British Soap Awards in May 2006, for her role as Rita Sullivan. Was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at the 2010 Birthday Honours, for her services to drama. Was arrested in March 2014 on suspicion of drink-driving, pleaded not guilty in court but changed her plea to guilty in January 2015. Was banned from driving for one year and fined £3,000and ordered to pay £1,750 in costs. Is a private person and rarely gives interviews, although she has given some for Coronation Street documentaries, and has appeared at several television awards shows.

Trivia: Is entitled to be addressed as 'The Honourable Susan Nicholls' due to her father being appointed a life peer. While appearing on Crossroads, she sang a song on the show that later appeared in the UK Singles Chart at number seventeen in 1968. Sang between strip acts in a nightclub in Vienna in the early 1970s. In 1976, toured America and Canada with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the play London Assurance, ending with a six-week run on Broadway. Played the role of Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street on a recurring basis from 1979 and joined the cast permanently in 1985. Won the British Soap Award for Hero of the Year in 2003. In 2011, a nurse noticed a mole on Sue's shoulder while watching Coronation Street and contacted the show - it was later confirmed to be cancer and she had the mole removed.

Trivia: Took dancing lessons from the age of three and played a part in many school theatrical productions. Made her television debut on Granada Television's Scene at 6.30, aged 10. Made her stage debut as one of the Von Trapp children in a stage production of The Sound of Music at the Palace Theatre in London, aged 12. When she was 16 years old, her mother was killed in a hit-and-run road accident in Brighton. Worked in repertory theatre after graduating from drama school, including a year with the BBC Radio repertory company. Joined Coronation Street as Gail Platt in 1974 and has remained with the soap ever since. Is a patron of the Born Free Foundation, and joined them at the House of Commons in 2006 to speak about the proposed changes to the Animal Welfare Bill. Supports the charity ActionAid and has visited Sierra Leone to support its cause. Has received many awards including being honoured twice with the Outstanding Achievement Award for her performance on Coronation Street. Received the British Soap Award for Scene of the Year in 2019 for a monologue performed which was also nominated for a BAFTA TV Award.
