Her first guitar was gifted by her mother on her 13th birthday - a small, hand-made, mother-of-pearl inlaid guitar - before her family moved to California, United States, in 1961. In 1962, wrote her first song, "Angel in White," with her sister, Jean. In 1969, co-founded Fanny, one of the first all-female hard-rock bands to sign with a major record label, Reprise; the band's name was proposed by June. Fanny, June's band, had the same publicist as The Beatles. Left Fanny in 1974, established her own label in 1981, Fabulous Records; albums released under the label include Heartsong (1981) and One World, One Heart (1988). Founded the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA), with her partner Ann Hackler, in 1986. In 2000, famous songwriter David Bowie was quoted as calling Fanny "one of the finest rock bands of their time," by Rolling Stone magazine. Funded her autobiography, Land of a Thousand Bridges, through Kickstarter.
