Trivia: The son of actress Nan Kelly Yorke, Jack Kelly was the younger brother of stage and film star Nancy Kelly. Like Nancy, Jack was a professional from an early age, acting in radio and on stage before the age of 10, and in films from 1937 (he is quite prominent in a brace of 1939 20th Century-Fox films, Young Mr. Lincoln and The Story of Alexander Graham Bell). He reemerged as a leading man in the early 1950s, appearing in such films as Forbidden Planet (1956, as the ill-fated Lieutenant Farnam). Signed by Warner Bros. in 1955, Kelly starred as Dr. Paris Mitchell in the weekly TV version of the 1942 film King's Row. He went on to play gamblin' man Bart Maverick on the longer-running Warners western series Maverick. Though his popularity never matched that of his co-star James Garner, Kelly still developed a fan following as Bart; he remained with the series from 1957 until its cancellation in 1962, appearing opposite such Garner successors as Roger Moore and Robert Colbert. Kelly dabbled in a little bit of everything after that: hosting the anthology series NBC Comedy Playhouse (1973), emceeing the game show Sale of the Century (1969-71), and playing hard-nosed Lt. Ryan on the Teresa Graves series Get Christie Love (1974) and Harry Hammond on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1977-79). He revived the Bart Maverick character on 1978's The New Maverick and the 1990 TV movie The Gambler Returns: Luck of the Draw. Chances are that, had he lived, Jack Kelly would have been invited to co-star again with Garner in the 1994 Mel Gibson theatrical-feature version of Maverick.

Trivia: American actress Kathleen Crowley made her first mark on the entertainment world when she was elected Miss Egg Harbor of 1949. This led to the Miss New Jersey title and finally to the Miss America pageant, where Kathleen got no farther than Miss Congeniality. Fortunately this title came with a scholarship, enabling Kathleen to go to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. A few years later, Kathleen was hired by actor/producer Robert Montgomery to portray Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester in a 1951 live-TV adaptation of A Star is Born. A desultory film contract followed, but after a single unimportant appearance in a Betty Grable picture Kathleen was back in television. She preferred free-lancing, appearing regularly only on the 1954 syndicated series Waterfront. At the height of her TV activity, Ms. Crowley was cast as the female lead in Disney's Westward Ho the Wagons (1956); unfortunately most of the studio publicity concentrated on the presence in the film of several Mousketeers like Cubby O'Brien and Karen Pendleton. Several years of TV work later, Kathleen was still a "guest star" but not quite a real star. In the early '60s, after a brief Warner Bros. contract, she gradually faded from view. Crowley died in 2017, at age 87.

Trivia: American actor Robert Burton had the haunted eyes and funereal manner of a city coroner. As such, his film roles were confined to such stock parts as the crooked politician, the unfeeling physician, the self-absorbed scientist, the crooked attorney, the weakling politician, the hidden killer, or the surly fellow whom the heroine shouldn't have married. Burton's movies seldom made the "classic" category; while he appeared in several "A" films like The Big Heat (1953), Compulsion (1959) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962) (appearing in the latter as the convention chairman in the climactic assassination sequence), most of his movies were along the lines of I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957) and Invasion of the Animal People (1962) (for which he was top-billed). Robert Burton was also a frequent TV guest star, though his credits should not be confused with those of soap-opera regular Robert "Skip" Burton.

Trivia: Character actor Gage Clarke came to television (and then movies) after spending considerable time on-stage during the 1930s and 1940s. In addition to anthology series including Lux Video Theatre and Kraft Theatre, his list of small-screen credits included roles on Mr. Peepers and appearances in multiple episodes of Maverick and Gunsmoke (where he had the recurring role of Mr. Botkin). With his heavyset build, graying hair, and dignified bearing and diction, he was often cast as judges and clergymen later in his career, including a meaty role in Paul Landres' underrated horror opus The Return of Dracula (1958), in which he played the reverend who helps identify the threat of vampirism that has descended on a small California town. He also cut a memorable dramatic figure in the Twilight Zone episode "One More Pallbearer", as the minister who refuses to be cowed into abandoning his principles by megalomaniac millionaire Joseph Wiseman. Clarke stood in well with the Disney organization, which used him in Pollyanna (1960), The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) and The Monkey's Uncle (1965), the latter released the year after his death. His other feature film work included major roles in Mervyn LeRoy's The Bad Seed (1956) and Robert Wise's I Want to Live.

Trivia: Indiana native Charles Arnt attended Princeton University, where he was president of the Triangle Club and where he earned a geological engineering degree. Short, balding and with an air of perpetual suspicion concerning his fellow man, Arnt seemed far older than his 30 years when he was featured in the original Broadway production of Knickerbocker Holiday. In the movies, Arnt was often cast as snoopy clerks, inquisitive next-door neighbors or curious bystanders. Charles Arnt was seen in such films as The Falcon's Brother (1942), The Great Gildersleeve (1943) and That Wonderful Urge (1948); he also played one top-billed lead, as an obsessive art dealer in PRC's Dangerous Intruder (1946).

Trivia: "A very funny guy -- funnier than most gave him credit for," as one director described him, lanky, slow-moving Guy Wilkerson is fondly remembered for playing comedy sidekick Panhandle Perkins in the 1942-1945 PRC Texas Rangers film series, a low-rent competition for Republic Pictures' popular Three Mesquiteers Westerns. As Panhandle, Wilkerson's comedy was never intrusive and often used merely as a slow-witted counterpoint to the action. In Hollywood from at least 1937 (some sources claim he appeared onscreen as early as the 1920s), Wilkerson had honed his skills in minstrel shows, burlesque, and vaudeville, but away from his sidekick duties at PRC, he was usually seen playing less humorous characters, notably ministers or undertakers. Appearing in hundreds of feature films and television series over three decades, Guy Wilkerson was last seen in the crime thriller The Todd Killings in 1971, the year of his death from cancer.
