John Wayne (Actor)

Trivia: Arguably the most popular -- and certainly the busiest -- movie leading man in Hollywood history, John Wayne entered the film business while working as a laborer on the Fox lot during summer vacations from U.S.C., which he attended on a football scholarship. He met and was befriended by John Ford, a young director who was beginning to make a name for himself in action films, comedies, and dramas. Wayne was cast in small roles in Ford's late-'20s films, occasionally under the name Duke Morrison. It was Ford who recommended Wayne to director Raoul Walsh for the male lead in the 1930 epic Western The Big Trail, and, although it was a failure at the box office, the movie showed Wayne's potential as a leading man. During the next nine years, be busied himself in a multitude of B-Westerns and serials -- most notably Shadow of the Eagle and The Three Mesquiteers series -- in between occasional bit parts in larger features such as Warner Bros.' Baby Face, starring Barbara Stanwyck. But it was in action roles that Wayne excelled, exuding a warm and imposing manliness onscreen to which both men and women could respond. In 1939, Ford cast Wayne as the Ringo Kid in the adventure Stagecoach, a brilliant Western of modest scale but tremendous power (and incalculable importance to the genre), and the actor finally showed what he could do. Wayne nearly stole a picture filled with Oscar-caliber performances, and his career was made. He starred in most of Ford's subsequent major films, whether Westerns (Fort Apache [1948], She Wore a Yellow Ribbon [1949], Rio Grande [1950], The Searchers [1956]); war pictures (They Were Expendable [1945]); or serious dramas (The Quiet Man [1952], in which Wayne also directed some of the action sequences). He also starred in numerous movies for other directors, including several extremely popular World War II thrillers (Flying Tigers [1942], Back to Bataan [1945], Fighting Seabees [1944], Sands of Iwo Jima [1949]); costume action films (Reap the Wild Wind [1942], Wake of the Red Witch [1949]); and Westerns (Red River [1948]). His box-office popularity rose steadily through the 1940s, and by the beginning of the 1950s he'd also begun producing movies through his company Wayne-Fellowes, later Batjac, in association with his sons Michael and Patrick (who also became an actor). Most of these films were extremely successful, and included such titles as Angel and the Badman (1947), Island in the Sky (1953), The High and the Mighty (1954), and Hondo (1953). The 1958 Western Rio Bravo, directed by Howard Hawks, proved so popular that it was remade by Hawks and Wayne twice, once as El Dorado and later as Rio Lobo. At the end of the 1950s, Wayne began taking on bigger films, most notably The Alamo (1960), which he produced and directed, as well as starred in. It was well received but had to be cut to sustain any box-office success (the film was restored to full length in 1992). During the early '60s, concerned over the growing liberal slant in American politics, Wayne emerged as a spokesman for conservative causes, especially support for America's role in Vietnam, which put him at odds with a new generation of journalists and film critics. Coupled with his advancing age, and a seeming tendency to overact, he became a target for liberals and leftists. However, his movies remained popular. McLintock!, which, despite well-articulated statements against racism and the mistreatment of Native Americans, and in support of environmentalism, seemed to confirm the left's worst fears, but also earned more than ten million dollars and made the list of top-grossing films of 1963-1964. Virtually all of his subsequent movies, including the pro-Vietnam War drama The Green Berets (1968), were very popular with audiences, but not with critics. Further controversy erupted with the release of The Cowboys, which outraged liberals with its seeming justification of violence as a solution to lawlessness, but it was successful enough to generate a short-lived television series. Amid all of the shouting and agonizing over his politics, Wayne won an Oscar for his role as marshal Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, a part that he later reprised in a sequel. Wayne weathered the Vietnam War, but, by then, time had become his enemy. His action films saw him working alongside increasingly younger co-stars, and the decline in popularity of the Western ended up putting him into awkward contemporary action films like McQ (1974). Following his final film, The Shootist (1976) -- possibly his best Western since The Searchers -- the news that Wayne was stricken ill with cancer (which eventually took his life in 1979) wiped the slate clean, and his support for the Panama Canal Treaty at the end of the 1970s belatedly made him a hero for the left. Wayne finished his life honored by the film community, the U.S. Congress, and the American people as had no actor before or since. He remains among the most popular actors of his generation, as evidenced by the continual rereleases of his films on home video.
Christopher Mitchum (Actor)
Born: October 16, 1943
Trivia: The second son of actor Robert Mitchum, Christopher Mitchum began his own spotty film career in the late 1960s, after attending Dublin's Trinity College and earning a BA from the University of Arizona. Christopher looked and sounded nothing at all like his father, thereby avoiding unwarranted cries of "Nepotism!" from cynical critics. Like his brother Jim and his uncle John, Christopher found that his best screen opportunities were in westerns. He played supporting parts in a number of John Wayne pictures, including Rio Lobo (1969), Chisum (1970), Big Jake (1971). Though he prefers writing to acting, Christopher Mitchum continued showing up in theatrical and made-for-video action fare into the late 1980s; in 1993, he was nostalgically cast as a ranch hand in the all-star Wyatt Earp biopic Tombstone.
Jack Elam (Actor)

Trivia: A graduate of Santa Monica Junior College, Jack Elam spent the immediate post-World War II years as an accountant, numbering several important Hollywood stars among his clients. Already blind in one eye from a childhood fight, Elam was in danger of losing the sight in his other eye as a result of his demanding profession. Several of his show business friends suggested that Elam give acting a try; Elam would be a natural as a villain. A natural he was, and throughout the 1950s Elam cemented his reputation as one of the meanest-looking and most reliable "heavies" in the movies. Few of his screen roles gave him the opportunity to display his natural wit and sense of comic timing, but inklings of these skills were evident in his first regular TV series assignments: The Dakotas and Temple Houston, both 1963. In 1967, Elam was given his first all-out comedy role in Support Your Local Sheriff, after which he found his villainous assignments dwindling and his comic jobs increasing. Elam starred as the patriarch of an itinerant Southwestern family in the 1974 TV series The Texas Wheelers (his sons were played by Gary Busey and Mark Hamill), and in 1979 he played a benign Frankenstein-monster type in the weekly horror spoof Struck By Lightning. Later TV series in the Elam manifest included Detective in the House (1985) and Easy Street (1987). Of course Elam would also crack up audiences in the 1980s with his roles in Cannonball Run and Cannonball Run II. Though well established as a comic actor, Elam would never completely abandon the western genre that had sustained him in the 1950s and 1960s; in 1993, a proud Elam was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Two short years later the longitme star would essay his final screen role in the made for television western Bonanza: Under Attack.
Robert Donner (Actor)

Trivia: From his screen debut in 1965 onward, Robert Donner has revelled in spooky, oddball roles of the street evangelist/undertaker/obsessive lawman variety. Most often spotted in Westerns, he has appeared in El Dorado (1967), The Undefeated (1969), Chisum (1970), High Plains Drifter (1973), The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), and The Last Hard Men (1975). On TV, he was regularly featured as Yancy Tucker on The Waltons (1972-1979) and Mayor Chamberlain Brown in Legend (1995). Donner's crowning series-TV achievement was as the zoned-out Exidor, leader of an invisible cult called the Friends of Venus, on the popular sitcom Mork & Mindy (1978-1982). Robert Donner is married to producer/writer Jill Sherman.
David Huddleston (Actor)

Trivia: Big-framed character actor (and sometime leading man) David Huddleston worked in virtually every film and television genre there is, from Westerns to crime dramas to science fiction. Born in Vinton, Virginia, he attended the Fork Union Military Academy before entering the United States Air Force, where he received a commission as an officer. After returning to civilian life, Huddleston enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his television debut in 1961, at age 31, in an episode of the Western series Shotgun Slade. Two years later, the actor made his first big-screen appearance with a small role in All the Way Home (1963). A year later, he showed up in Black Like Me; and in 1968, Huddleston was back on the big screen in the thriller A Lovely Way to Die. He got considerably busier in the years that followed, mostly on television series such as Adam 12, Then Came Bronson, and Room 222, in roles of ever-increasing size. These were broken up by the occasional film job, of which the most notable at the time was the part of the comically helpful town dentist in Howard Hawks' Western Rio Lobo (1970), which gave Huddleston some extended (and humorous) screen-time alongside John Wayne. At the time, his feature-film work was weighted very heavily toward Westerns, while on television Huddleston played everything from service-station attendants to teachers to devious executives, primarily in crime shows. With his deep voice and prominent screen presence, plus a sense of humor that never seemed too far from his portrayals -- even of villains -- Huddleston was one of the busier character actors of the 1970s. Indeed, 1974 comprised a year of credits that any actor in the business could envy: John Wayne used Huddleston in McQ, one of the aging star's efforts to get away from Westerns, but Huddleston was back doing oaters in Billy Two Hats and aided Mel Brooks in parodying the genre in Blazing Saddles (all 1974). As comical as Huddleston could be, he could play sinister equally well, as he proved in Terence Young's The Klansman (1974) -- and that doesn't even count his television roles. By the end of the 1970s, he had graduated to a starring role in the series Hizzoner (1979), about a small-town mayor; and in the 1980s he had recurring roles in series such as The Wonder Years. Huddleston's big-screen breakthrough came with the title role in Santa Claus: The Movie (1985), and he became a ubiquitous figure on the small screen with a series of orange-juice commercials. His subsequent big-screen appearances included Frantic (1988) and The Big Lebowski (1998), playing the title character, and he continued working into the first decade of the 21st century. In 2004, Huddleston essayed one of the most interesting and challenging roles of his screen career, in the short film Reveille. Working without dialogue alongside James McEachin (with whom he'd previously worked in the series Tenafly), he helped tell the story of a sometimes comical, ultimately bittersweet rivalry between two veterans of different armed services. Huddleston died in 2016, at age 85.
Sherry Lansing (Actor)

Trivia: Fans of Howard Hawks' Rio Lobo (1969) may be intrigued to discover that the beautiful secondary heroine who is facially disfigured by the villains is the same person who later produced Fatal Attraction (1987), The Accused (1988) and Indecent Proposal (1993). Chicago-born film executive Sherry Lansing did indeed pursue an acting career after graduating from Northwestern University. Sensing that her film roles might be limited to Rio Lobo-type supporting parts, Ms. Lansing applied her intelligence and drive to the production end. She joined Talent Associates in 1974, where she was an executive in charge of development; three years later, she was appointed vice president in charge of production at Columbia. Hit films like the Oscar-winning Kramer vs. Kramer catapulted Ms. Lansing into the presidency of 20th Century-Fox -- the first woman ever to hold such a position. While undaunted by the heavy administrative responsibilities, Lansing preferred to be a hands-on moviemaker, thus in 1984 she teamed with one-time Paramount Pictures president Stanley R. Jaffe to form the successful independent production company, Jaffe-Lansing. When Jaffe was appointed president of Paramount Communications in 1990, Sherry Lansing became that organization's chairperson.
George Plimpton (Actor)

Trivia: To call George Plimpton merely an actor is woefully inadequate. Plimpton has also been a bullfighter, an orchestra conductor, a baseball and football player, a boxer, a circus performer and a tennis pro. He has indulged in each of these activities precisely once. George Plimpton's principal career was writing, something he pursued while at Harvard (he was an editor of the Harvard Lampoon) and while serving on the editing staff of Paris Review in the '50s and Horizon and Sports Illustrated in the '60s. Early in his career, Plimpton determined that the best way to write with expertise on a subject was through first-hand experience. Thus he fought bulls in Spain with Ernest Hemingway, played football with the Detroit Lions, was matched with tennis champ Pancho Gonzalez and bridge expert Osward Jacoby, and survived a few rounds with champion boxer Archie Moore. And he acted. He was a Bedouin extra in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), a bit player in The Detective (1968), and the character Bill Ford in Paper Lion (1968), a film based on Plimpton's own account of his brief football career (Alan Alda played Plimpton). From his experience playing a bit role as a gunned-down desperado in John Waynes Rio Lobo (1970), Plimpton fashioned an entire one-hour network TV special! Easily recognizable in later days thanks to his lucrative lecture and commercial endorsements, George Plimpton's acting assignments in recent years have been on the basis of his personality rather than as a stunt: Jodie Foster gave him a particularly suitable role as a William Buckley-type talk-show moderator in Little Man Tate (1991). Increasingly prominant on the screen throughout the 1990s, Plimpton essayed numerous small roles in such popular films as L.A. Story (1991), Nixon (1995), Good Will Hunting (1997) and Edtv (1999). As the 1990s gave way to the new millennium Plimpton was still going strong despite the effects of the passing years, and in 2001 alone he essayed a supporting role in the comedy Just Visiting and provided voiceover work for the short film Bullet in the Brain. On September 25, 2003, the world lost one of its most flamboyant and entertaining literary icons when George Plimpton died in his sleep in his New York apartment. He was 76.

Trivia: Mexican movie leading man Jorge Rivero has occasionally essayed character roles in North-of-the-Border productions. Rivero is best known to Howard Hawks buffs as Captain Pierre Cordona in Hawks' Rio Lobo (1969), in which the actor was afforded second billing, just below John Wayne. Though not confined to Latino roles, he has generally played such strongly ethnic types as Spotted Wolf, the principal Native American character in Soldier Blue (1970). Active into the 1990s, Jorge Rivero was most recently seen in 1993's Ice.
Victor French (Actor)

Trivia: The son of a movie stunt man, Victor French made his screen entree in westerns, where his unkempt beard and scowling countenance made him a perfect heavy. He carried over his robbin' and rustlin' activities into television, making multiple appearances on such series as Gunsmoke and Bonanza. It was former Bonanza star Michael Landon, a great friend of French's, who "humanized" the veteran screen villain with the role of farmer Isiah Edwards in the weekly TV drama Little House on the Prairie. French temporarily left Little House in 1977 to star in his own sitcom, Carter Country, in which he played an affable Southern sheriff who tried his best to accommodate the ever-changing racial relationships of the 1970s. In 1984, Landon cast French as ex-cop Michael Gordon, whose bitterness at the world was softened by the presence of a guardian angel (Landon), in the popular TV series Highway to Heaven. French directed every third episode of this series, extending his directorial activities to the Los Angeles theatre scene, where he won a Critics Circle award for his staging of 12 Angry Men. In contrast to his earlier bad-guy roles, French went out of his way in the 1980s to avoid parts that required him to exhibit cruelty or inhumanity. Victor French died in 1989, shortly after completing work on the final season of Highway to Heaven.
Jennifer O'Neill (Actor)
Born: February 20, 1948
Trivia: Jennifer O'Neill's mother was still pregnant when she and her husband visited Jennifer's future grandfather, a bank president residing in Rio De Janeiro. Thus it was that O'Neill was born in the shadow of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Raised in New England and trained at New York's Professional Children's School, she became a successful cosmetics model in her teens. In films from 1968, O'Neill made her starring bow in 1970's Rio Lobo. Apparently director Howard Hawks intended to "create" O'Neill in the same way that he elevated another model, Lauren Bacall, to stardom in 1944's To Have and Have Not; alas, Hawks and O'Neill didn't see eye to eye, and it would be two years before the actress would achieve any measure of genuine stardom. In 1972, she became every pubescent boy's dream girl when she played Dorothy, the twentyish war widow who turns to teenager Gary Grimes for affection, in Summer of 42. Her career moved in fits and spurts after that triumph. O'Neill also starred on the 1983 series Bare Essence (1983), in which she was well cast as "international beauty" Lady Bobbi Rowan; in addition, she has continued making occasional films into the next century.
