Moved to Mexico City after her father's death, at which time she began working as a dancer at the Teatro Tivoli, and later, as a showgirl she participated in sketches starring comedians José "El Ojón" Jasso and Óscar Ortiz de Pinedo, among others. Met her husband, Russian-born choreographer Julián de Meriche, while working at the Teatro Blanquita in the 1960s. Studied drama with Dimitrios Sarrás and Carlos Ancira and film directing and screenwriting with Ludwig Margules, Xavier Robles and Raul Figueroa. Became a star with the creation and portrayal of La India Maria, a comical indigenous Mexican character who got into mischievous situations and appeared in dozens of films and television series during the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
