Trivia: Actress Betty White got her start in local Los Angeles television as the "telephone girl" for video emcee Al Jarvis. By early 1950 she was one of the stars of the daily, five-hour series Hollywood on Television. One of the highlights of this program was a husband and wife sketch titled "Life With Elizabeth," which when committed to film and syndicated nationally in 1953 became White's first starring TV sitcom. She went on to headline her own network variety series in 1954, then co-starred with Bill Williams in the weekly TV domestic comedy Date With the Angels (1957), which without Williams was retitled The Betty White Show in early 1958. For the next 15 years she made guest appearances on various variety and quiz show efforts, and toured the straw-hat theatrical circuit in such plays as Critics Choice and Who Was That Lady, often appearing opposite her husband, TV personality Allen Ludden. Two years after hosting the 1971 syndicated informational series The Pet Set, she guest-starred as libidinous "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens on the fourth season opener of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Trivia: During her nine-year (1975-1984) tenure as Barbara Cooper on TV's One Day at a Time, Valerie Bertinelli grew from a chubby, awkward 15-year-old with only a smattering of bit-part credits into a polished actress and bona fide sex symbol. When Bertinelli "married" her One Day co-star Boyd Gaines in a 1982 episode, the ratings went through the roof, while many a male viewer's heart sank. One year earlier, Bertinelli had been a bride for real; her marriage to rock star Eddie Van Halen was kept under wraps by the series' producers for fear of damaging the actress' "Little Miss Perfect" image. Bertinelli's son by Van Halen was named Wolfgang, as in Mozart. Trivia: While savvy television viewers will no doubt recognize prolific small-screen actress Wendie Malick from such popular series as Baywatch, Just Shoot Me, and HBO's smart and sexy comedy Dream On, the late '90s found her feature career warming up in such independent efforts as Manna From Heaven (2001) and Bathroom Boy (2003). A native of Buffalo, NY, who first found work in front of the cameras as a Wilhelmina model in the 1970s, the Ohio Wesleyan University alum would later work for New York congressman Jack Kemp following her graduation. Subsequently gracing the catwalks of New York, Paris, and Madrid, it was a small role in the 1978 comedy How to Pick up Girls that provided the aspiring actress with her first screen break. Though she would appear in a few theatrical releases such as Scrooged (1988) during the 1980s, most of her work came with made-for-television features and such series as Kate and Allie and Anything But Love. Trivia: Versatile American actress Kirstie Alley has found success in feature films, but is still best known for her portrayal of neurotic Rebecca Howe during the latter years of the television series Cheers. Noted for her unusual beauty, thick, chestnut-colored hair, and whiskey voice, Alley studied drama in her native Kansas and then became an interior decorator. For a while, she went through a wild and crazy phase in which she abused cocaine and hung out with bikers, but when the lifestyle got old, Alley moved to California, underwent drug rehabilitation, and became a devout Scientologist. She made her feature-film debut playing Savic, a Vulcan student of Mr. Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and then played a major role in the television miniseries North and South, but she did not become a real star until she was selected to replace Shelly Long in Cheers in the late '80s. Though the role of Rebecca marked Alley as a comedienne, she is also a talented dramatic actress as she demonstrated in the 1988 outdoor thriller Shoot to Kill. In 1989, Alley had her first box-office hit with Look Who's Talking; that coupled with Cheers made her one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood and the winner of Emmys, a People's Choice award, and a Golden Globe for Look Who's Talking. With the demise of Cheers, Alley's career became more sporadic and the quality of her films uneven. Trivia: Hunky soap star Mark Valley felt the bite of the acting bug in high school, but the young man's long-term plans didn't include the bright lights of Hollywood. After graduation, Valley attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a degree in mathematics before being stationed in Germany for the better part of five years. The soldier also put his training into action as part of the ground forces in Operation Desert Storm, but it was in Berlin that a talent agent noticed his photogenic face and charismatic nature. The agent convinced Valley to explore the artistic talent he'd noticed so many years before, and he took up the acting profession when his tour of duty ended. The agent helped Valley land small roles on German television while he studied his new craft at the Etage School of Arts. With a few credits on his resumé, Valley then headed back to the States, where he scored a role in the 1993 John Schlesinger film The Innocent, and a role on the soap opera Another World. It was a part on another soap, however, that would earn Valley a loyal fan base. In 1994, he assumed a prominent role on Days of Our Lives, playing Jack Deveraux. Even though three other actors had played the part before, Valley rose to the occasion, winning the hearts of skeptical fans. He would continue to play the role until 1997, at which point he explored his new professional freedom by taking supporting roles in a variety of movies such as The Siege, Some Girl, and The Next Best Thing. As the new millennium began, a slew of TV appearances carried Valley from project to project as he assumed a regular role as the bad-news ex-husband of Maura Tierney on ER, and a government agent on The 4400. Then in 2003, Valley landed his first starring role in a prime-time show, Keen Eddie. He was cast as the titular New York City police detective, Eddie Arlette, who follows the trail of several criminals to London where he then works together with law enforcement during an extended stay. Co-starring with him in the series was soon-to-be up-and-coming actress Sienna Miller, playing his unexpected flatmate. Only a handful of episodes of the series aired on Fox before it was canceled, but it fared better when it was later shown on Bravo, including the episodes that had never been aired on network TV. Wasting no time, Valley soon found another regular TV role the following year, playing attorney Brad Chase on the quirky drama Boston Legal. He was able to hold his own alongside big-name veteran actors James Spader and William Shatner, and the show proved to be a major success. In 2006, Valley signed on to appear in Nanking, Bill Guttentag's documentary about the 1937 massacre of the Chinese city.
