Episode 1 - PilotWhen newlyweds, Steph (Kat Foster) and Jeff Woodcock (Eddie Kaye Thomas), move in next door to marriage veterans Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy Stark (Joely Fisher), the wisdom that Eddie shares with Jeff results in the young couple's first fight. |
Episode 2 - Sex for FurnitureAfter Eddie (Brad Garrett) accidentally breaks both patio chairs, Steph (Kat Foster) reveals to Joy (Joely Fisher) that the way she gets new home furniture is to barter sex. Joy decides to try this since Eddie’s decisions about the home are always a drawn-out issue, but when she does, her luck is not what she anticipated. Meanwhile, after conversing with Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Eddie learns that Joy’s idea came from Steph, and tries to enforce a plan to throw the ladies off guard. |
Episode 3 - The Wood PileThe wood pile that Eddie (Brad Garrett) stockpiles in his garage creates high tension between he and his wife Joy (Joely Fisher). When Joy finally gives Eddie an ultimatum to either make something with the wood or get rid of it, Eddie enlists the help of his new neighbors, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Steph (Kat Foster) Woodcock. Joy soon realizes, that even though Eddie might never do anything with his wood, he is not quite the same without it. |
Episode 4 - The RingWhen Joy (Joely Fisher) hears Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Steph’s (Kat Foster) adorable engagement story, she is reminded of how Eddie (Brad Garrett) proposed to her, and feels that she missed out. When Eddie attempts to make good on his 20-year old promise to get Joy an engagement ring, he only succeeds in further aggravating her. Eddie soon makes amends while the two realize they both agree on the place they are at in their own relationship. |
Episode 5 - Your Mother or Your WifeWhen Jeff’s (Eddie Kaye Thomas) mother (Miriam Flynn) comes to visit, tensions reach a boiling point after Jeff makes a split second decision to save his mother’s life over Steph’s (Kat Foster). Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) offer very opposing ideas on how to handle the sticky situation, while the truth is revealed about Eddie’s own relationship with his mother and that “symposium tan.” |
Episode 6 - Death SexAfter Eddie (Brad Garrett) fails to get a straight answer from his MRI technician on the diagnosis of his back pain, both he and Joy (Joely Fisher) fear the worst. However, their relationship takes a turn for the better after they start making the most of their time together. Upon learning that his pain is not life threatening, Eddie decides to keep the news to himself so that he and Joy can enjoy their newfound appreciation for each other, not to mention the “death sex.” Eddie soon learns that not confessing the truth about his condition might not be the best long-term medicine for his marriage and relationship with his friendly neighbors, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Steph Woodcock (Kat Foster). |
Episode 7 - The ToasterWhen Joy (Joely Fisher) unplugs the toaster in an effort to be environmentally conscious, Eddie (Brad Garrett) grows annoyed, refusing to believe that the action warrants energy conservation. Wanting to prove his wife wrong, Eddie confronts Tom Franklin (Darryl Sivad), a science teacher at Churchill High, who after siding with Eddie, receives an invite to the Stark house for dinner. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is busy planning a surprise birthday for Steph (Kat Foster) that Eddie and Joy accidentally ruin by their arguing. After Eddie and Joy finally agree to handle their future disagreements in a more constructive manner, their plan goes up in flames along with their toaster. |
Episode 8 - The Garage BandJeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is desperate for alone time as his overly doting wife, Steph (Kat Foster), wants to spend every moment with him - even in the shower! Eddie (Brad Garrett) suggests finding a “wife certified” activity that will give him some peace, such as the garage band that he has been a part of for years with neighbors Cofeld (Anthony Anderson), Stan (Jerry Lambert) and Russ (Will Sasso). When Steph heads over to Joy’s (Joely Fisher) to tell her about Jeff joining the band, she learns the real truth behind the extra curricular activity and is surprised to discover that Joy has a little secret of her own. |
Episode 9 - Dream GetawayAfter continuously witnessing the enthusiasm that Steph (Kat Foster) and Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) share for one another, Joy (Joely Fisher) decides that she would like to rekindle the romance with Eddie (Brad Garrett), especially after they forget their anniversary. Considering she just put together a great vacation deal for the Woodcock’s, she proposes the same destination idea to Eddie, who begrudgingly obliges. After one night away, Kat embarrassingly recounts a sex dream she had about Eddie the night before. While Jeff feels threatened, Eddie becomes more confident and desirable, leaving Joy feeling perplexed and a tad jealous by it all. |
Episode 10 - The Anniversary PartyEddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) attend the 25th anniversary party of their neighbors Stan and Vicki (Jerry Lambert and Christine Dunford), even though they forgot to RSVP. Throughout the duration of the night, curiosity gets the best of them after they continue hearing about how well Stan takes care of Vicki. Following a conversation with his buddy Stan, Eddie returns to Joy with a fresh, new perspective about his marriage and their roles. Meanwhile, Steph (Kat Foster) can’t seem to convince Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) to dance with her, so she insists on showing off her best dance moves to their neighbor Cofeld (Anthony Anderson). |
Episode 11 - The Hockey LieWhile cheering at a hockey game, Steph (Kat Foster) admits to Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) that while she only pretended to be a "hockey girl" when they were dating, she actually hates the sport. Jeff relays his shock to Eddie (Brad Garrett) who contends that lies during the courting process are necessary for the survival of the species. When Joy (Joely Fisher) hears that Eddie believes married people grow apart over the years, she proves that she and Eddie have grown so close that they even eat Oreo cookies in the same unique way while watching infomercials. Jeff takes Eddie to a hockey game so he can enjoy the sport with another guy, while Joy finds herself out on the town with an old friend (Jessica Lundy). At the end of the night, how will the couples decide they enjoy spending their evenings the most? |
Episode 12 - Daddy's GirlEddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) are excited for their daughter Allison (Krysten Ritter) to come home for the holidays, but Eddie is perplexed when she turns to Joy for comfort after an unexpected break-up. When Eddie tries to impress Allison at the Woodcock’s (Kat Foster and Eddie Kaye Thomas) New Year’s Eve Party with his new cheerful outlook on life, Allison soon realizes that she liked her dad better when he was pessimistic and angry. |
Episode 13 - Fight FriendWhen Joy (Joely Fisher) suggests attending a Saturday afternoon marriage counseling workshop, Eddie (Brad Garrett) becomes disgruntled and refuses to give up his weekend. Joy raises the issue again the next day, with Eddie exposing Nicole (Margaret Cho) as Joy’s new fight friend- a friend Joy turns to for help when she and Eddie are fighting. They get in a heated debate and Joy teams up with Nicole, while Eddie turns to Nicole’s husband and buddy, Cofeld (Anthony Anderson), to prove their points. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) tries to befriend Steph’s (Kat Foster) fight friend, but both he and Eddie realize that they may have been one step behind their wives the whole time. |
Episode 14 - The ColleagueWhen Eddie (Brad Garrett) is approached by Lucy (Brooke Bloom), the new female history teacher, Joy (Joely Fisher) insists that he meet with his new colleague despite his concerns of impending jealousy. Witnessing Eddie and Lucy connecting over their shared enthusiasm for history, Joy beomes envious and attempts to join them. Unable to grab Eddie's attention, Joy's behavior turns unusual forcing Eddie to confront her antics. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is startled when he finds the star quarterback flirting with Steph (Kat Foster), but is happy to finally be a cool guy in high school! |
Episode 15 - The Bachelor PartyWhen Eddie (Brad Garrett) and his friends Cofeld (Anthony Anderson), Stan (Jerry Lambert) and Leon (Charles Esten) find out that Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) never had a bachelor party, they decide that it's an excuse to hit a strip club and throw him one. However, the party isn't all that it's cracked up to be, especially when Cofeld's wife Nicole (Margaret Cho) tags along. With Joy(Joely Fisher) at home nursing a nasty cold, Steph (Kat Foster) comes to the rescue when she brings over some exotic homeopathic remedies that end up bringing the ladies closer together. |
Episode 16 - The Italian AffairAfter Eddie (Brad Garrett) cleans out his closet per Joy’s (Joely Fisher) request, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) stops by and discovers an undeveloped role of film lying around. Jeff and Steph (Kat Foster) develop the role -after getting Eddie's approval- and are surprised to find a mullet-haired Eddie and Joy on what appears to be a fun and romantic tour of Italy! When Eddie sees the images, he panics and makes Jeff promise never to mention the photos or the trip to Italy again. Unfortunately, nothing gets past Joy, and when she discovers the only remaining snapshot, she is reminded of the worst thing Eddie has ever done to her. |
Episode 17 - Clay DateEddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) visit their daughter Allison (Krysten Ritter) for Parents Weekend at her college and are stunned when she announces that she is majoring in “Ceramic Studies.” Between finding out that Allison is taking a semester off to work for a pottery outreach program with her teacher’s assistant Doug (Timm Sharp), and sharing a dorm room with Paul “single dad” Nash (Dan Butler), Eddie and Joy do not have the weekend they envisioned. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) hires a tile guy (Hector Luis Bustamante) to help Steph (Kat Foster) with their bathroom in hopes of not getting involved. But Jeff’s plan backfires when Steph asks for his honest opinion. |
Episode 18 - I (Heart) Woodcockseff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Steph (Kat Foster) Woodcock throw a dinner party, inviting Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) as well their friends, Cofeld (Anthony Anderson) and Nicole (Margaret Cho). Overwhelmed by the Woodcock's peppy optimism, Eddie and Joy find an excuse to leave early. When they discover that Cofeld and Nicole have become friends with the Woodcocks and that the two couples have been spending time together without them, Eddie and Joy are surprisingly hurt and begin to miss their youthful neighbors. The long-time marrieds soon find themselves going to great lengths to win back the friendship of their newlywed friends next door. |
Episode 19 - The Coffee MakerSteph (Kat Foster) gives Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) a cappuccino maker that was a wedding gift from Jeff’s (Eddie Kaye Thomas) mom. Joy loves the gift, but Eddie soon begins to resent Joy for not learning how to work the machine herself. When Eddie refuses to make Joy her nightly cappuccino, she makes a list of all the things that she does around the house and comes to the conclusion that Eddie doesn't do enough. To compensate for their uneven workload, Joy gives Eddie the chore of paying the bills, which later proves not to be in the best interest of their household. Meanwhile Jeff tries to get back at Steph for giving a present from his mom away. |
Episode 20 - That's RidiculousWhen Joy (Joely Fisher) leaves for a Spring Break vacation with daughter Allison (Krysten Ritter), she tells Eddie (Brad Garrett) that she will miss him and he replies, "That's ridiculous." Eddie is thrilled Joy is gone but soon realizes he is miserable alone, especially when a storm knocks the cable out. To occupy himself, he invites Cofeld (Anthony Anderson) over for some fun with nerf guns and goggles, but when Cofeld has to return to his wife, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Steph (Kat Foster) find Eddie crashing their intimate indoor picnic. Meanwhile, Joy and Allison wind up fighting over a hot environmentalist (Brian Patrick Wade) after he charms them into joining his Beach Brigade. |
Episode 21 - Webby's Not HappyEddie's (Brad Garrett) free-spirited college buddy Webby (Ted McGinley) swings into town, sharing tales of his wild bachelorhood with Eddie and Joy (Joely Fisher). After he leaves, Joy comments that Webby's single life seems unfulfilled and decides to introduce him to her friend Denise (Tricia Leigh Fisher), much to Eddie's chagrin. When Webby and Denise instantly hit it off, Eddie is shocked that Webby would want to settle down and end the spontaneous lifestyle he greatly admires. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) goes to great lengths to prove to Steph (Kat Foster) that her new 'fun' blouse looks ridiculous. |
Episode 22 - Summer of LoveWhen Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy's (Joely Fisher) daughter Allison (Krysten Ritter) returns home for summer vacation with her boyfriend Doug (Timm Sharp), the two immediately set up camp outside of the Stark household in his broken down van. With Joy swamped at work, Eddie becomes bored with the abundance of time on his hands that summer break brings, while Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) grows uptight with Steph (Kat Foster) for slacking off on her thesis. After begrudgingly agreeing to join the group "camping" in his driveway, Eddie begins to enjoy his summer and the relaxed environment that accompanies it. |
