Episode 1 - You've Got to DreamIt’s 1937 and Glasgow is in the grip of depression. James Herriot, fresh out of veterinary college, is struggling to find work. Under pressure from his mother to take a job on the docks, James wants to follow his dream and seizes an opportunity to interview for a job as a veterinary assistant in Yorkshire. |
Episode 2 - Another Farnon?Just when James is settling into life in the Dales, Siegfried’s younger brother Tristan arrives bringing his own unique brand of chaos to Skeldale House. Recently returned from Edinburgh Veterinary college Tristan announces he’s just passed his final exams. Siegfried is delighted and instructs James to take Tristan on his rounds to put his theory into practice. James obliges but starts to feel threatened by the new arrival when Tristan goes out of his way to impress his brother. |
Episode 3 - AndanteIt’s race weekend and Siegfried is interviewing for the job of Attending Vet at Darrowby Racecourse. It’s a position he’s coveted for a long time and he works hard to impress the head of the race course, General Ransom. Siegfried’s charm offensive seems to pay off when Ransom makes him an offer. But it’s not without its caveats and Siegfried is torn between his own personal ambition and his loyalty to James. |
Episode 4 - A Tricki CaseJames is alarmed to receive a call from Mrs Pumphrey who fears her beloved Tricki Woo is dying. He examines the dog and it becomes clear Mrs Pumphrey hasn’t been following the diet James prescribed. It’s time for drastic action. James takes Tricki back to Skeldale House for a period of rehabilitation. But things don’t go according to plan when Tricki goes awol and his condition deteriorates. |
Episode 5 - All's FairIt’s the Darrowby Show and James is pleased as punch that he’s been given the honour of Attending Vet. But Siegfried and Tristan know the job is a poisoned chalice and reckon James won’t last the day without throwing in the towel. The brothers place a bet and Mrs Hall is the only one who believes James will stick it out to the bitter end. |
Episode 6 - A Cure For All IllsThe Dales are in the grip of a bitter winter. Siegfried has flu and James’s workload has doubled. Dick Rudd calls him out to examine his pedigree cow Strawberry who is struggling for breath. James is alarmed to discover she has an abscess in her throat and fears that if it continues to grow she will choke to death. Dick is devastated. He invested his family’s life savings in the cow, at James’ recommendation, in the hope she would be the genesis of a new herd. James’ attempts to treat the cow fail and it’s looking hopeless. |
Episode 7 - The Night Before ChristmasIt’s Christmas Eve and the day before Helen and Hugh’s much anticipated wedding. James is trying to bury his pain over Helen and has invited his new girlfriend Connie to the annual Skeldale Christmas party. Preparations are well under way, Tristan has decked the halls with mistletoe and Mrs Hall has laid on a feast and is looking forward to her son Edward returning for Christmas. Siegfried is delighted when Dorothy turns up and wonders if now is the time to throw caution to the wind. |
