His loyalty runs deep: he refuses to collaborate with Monahan and is publicly arrested on a sodomy charge.

Episode 7 - Somebody Get A ShovelIn 1916, Eli calls a meeting with Monahan trying to negotiate the terms of a collaboration with Standard Oil, but Monahan scoffs at Eli’s attempt to leverage his dwindling power. Eli shoots Monahan and provokes a gunfight, in which he kills every single one of Monahan’s accomplices.

Episode 8 - All Their Guilty StainsIn 1916, Sally, despite better judgment, sleeps with Matthew again. As they are having sex in the shed, Jeannie glimpses into the room and discovers her mother. Devastated by seeing her family completely unravel, she runs away. At the same time, Niles rejects Eli’s offer to work together again. Stating that all of Eli’s plans have been dead ends.

Episode 9 - The BearIn 1916, the McCulloughs find Jeannie, who has shown up at a neighboring ranch after her encounter with Judson. Pete finally admits to her that Eli was responsible for the Garcia massacre and they plan to escape together.
