Season 2 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - A Soldier's Daughter

Queen Victoria surprises the court when she insists on returning to her duties shortly after childbirth. Adoring new father Albert decides not to trouble her with worrying news regarding British soldiers in Afghanistan, but as the reports worsen, Victoria grows increasingly suspicious that he and Prime Minister Robert Peel are hiding something from her. Victoria sets about reclaiming her place with characteristic impulsiveness, bringing in a formidable new Mistress of the Robes and demanding that her former Chief Cook, Francatelli, return to the Palace kitchens. Her attempts to reassert control falter when her Coburg in-laws descend for the Christening, their dynastic plotting only intensifying her sense of frustration. Convinced that the truth about Afghanistan is being kept from her, Victoria seeks answers from the Duke of Wellington, and what she learns creates a rift between her and Albert that their sharp-eyed Uncle Leopold is swift to detect. Albert vehemently defends his decision to shield his wife from distressing news. Yet when the truth of Britain’s catastrophic military failure hits London, it is Victoria who instinctively understands the steps they need to take to lift the nation’s morale. Her boldness in the face of adversity reminds Albert of the woman he loves and leads them to a passionate reconciliation. But it’s becoming clear that parenthood hasn’t dimmed the force of either of their personalities: this is to be a devoted yet volatile union.

Episode 2 - The Green-Eyed Monster

Victoria is thrown into turmoil by the realisation that she is pregnant again, and her equilibrium is further threatened by Albert’s burgeoning friendship with the lady mathematician, Ada Lovelace.

Episode 3 - Warp and Weft

Discontent is growing in the country, and Victoria throws a ball in a misguided attempt to help the silk weavers of Spitalfields – but the spectacular event only exposes her naivety, and an unexpected grief finally forces her to put childish things away for good.

Episode 4 - The Sins of the Father

The Royal Court is delighted by the arrival of a healthy Prince of Wales, but Victoria finds herself paralyzed by an inexplicable sorrow and is unable to bond with her son. When tragic news arrives from Coburg, Albert is forced to depart for his childhood home – the first time Victoria and Albert have been apart since their wedding. In Coburg, Albert learns a dark family secret and begins to unravel. Back at the Palace, a blunder by Skerrett threatens to put Francatelli in the firing line unless she exposes her deepest secret. Will she confess and risk losing her livelihood? Meanwhile, a reluctant revelation from Drummond threatens to end his tentative friendship with Lord Alfred. When national duty calls, Victoria finds she cannot escape the responsibilities of being Queen regardless of whether or not Albert is standing behind her, and must draw on reserves of courage that she didn’t know she had. Will she in turn be able to reach Albert in his private torment?

Episode 5 - Entente Cordiale

Victoria decides to try her hand at foreign relations, and takes the royal court on an adventure to France, stepping toe to toe with the cunning King of the French, Louis Philippe.

Episode 6 - Faith, Hope & Charity

News of the horrific famine in Ireland has finally reached the Queen. She is adamant that her government should be doing more to help, but meets with surprising opposition from her Prime Minister.

Episode 7 - The King Over the Water

Feeling suffocated after a repeated assassination attempt leads to increased security at the Palace, Victoria seeks escape to the land she fantasised about as a child: the Scottish Highlands. However, it isn’t the romantic retreat she has read about in her Walter Scott novels, and she begins to realise that, wherever she is in the world, she can’t escape the fact that she is Queen. When a day out takes an unexpected turn, Victoria finally gets the anonymity she wished for, while Albert enjoys being able to play the role of a traditional husband for the first time. Hidden away from normal Palace life, the entire court – servants and royals alike – find secrets and romance bubbling up to the surface on a liberating midsummer’s night. But the holiday has to end eventually and, with the sound of bag pipes ringing in their ears, Victoria and her court must return to London and face reality.

Episode 8 - The Luxury of Conscience

Peel fights the battle of his career in Parliament, facing the consequences of taking a stand against the Corn Laws. But Albert inadvertently plays into the hands of Peel’s critics, and jeopardizes the progress that they have fought for. Meanwhile, at the Palace, the strained relationship between Victoria, Albert and Victoria’s closest confidante, Lehzen, is pushed to breaking point, as Albert grows increasingly frustrated about the control that he perceives Lehzen to have over his wife, especially when the health of their children is at stake. Faced with the prospect of having to live without their respective crutches, Victoria and Albert begin to lose sight of each other. But when tragedy strikes, they realize that sacrifices will have to be made in both their personal and political lives.
