Has Italian and Spanish ancestry on his father's side and Italian ancestry on his mother's side. Was born the third of four children and grew up in a tight-knit, football-loving family. Developed a passion for football at an early age and played constantly with his elder brothers and cousins.
Moved to Spain from Argentina at the age of 13 to play for Barcelona's youth program, which also paid for monthly bone injections to treat his growth hormone deficiency. Compared favourably at an early age to Argentina's legendary Diego Maradona (even by Maradona himself), a player very similar to Messi in height, movement and genius with the ball. Played for Barcelona in a La Liga game (2004) and scored a goal in La Liga (2005) at a record age of 17, only to see both marks eclipsed by teammate Bojan Krkic in 2007.
Captured both La Liga and Champions League titles with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009 and won an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2008. Received the prestigious Ballon d'Or in 2009 as the best footballer in the world, leading the voting by a record margin (240 points) over Cristiano Ronaldo. Also claimed the Golden Ball in 2009 as European footballer of the year.
Scored a personal-best four goals against Arsenal in a 2010 Champions League quarterfinal match, equalling Barcelona's career goal-scoring mark for the tournament (25) in the process. Announced as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in March, 2010. In 2016, announced his retirement after Argentina lost to Chile in a major tournament final.
Following a campaign to urge him to change his mind, a statue of him was unveiled in the capital, Buenos Aires, and 50,000 supporters marched to the Obelisk, a national monument in the capital, chanting "Don't go, Leo". Several weeks later, it was confirmed that he had reversed his decision to retire from international football, and he was included in the squad for the national team's qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. His family looks after his professional life; his father has been his agent since he was 14 and his eldest brother, Rodrigo, looks after his daily schedule and publicity, while his mother and other brother, Matias, manage his charitable foundation, the Leo Messi Foundation.
