Season 1 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Ramon

A routine day for Capt. Miller. It starts with his wife Elizabeth complaining about the unsafe conditions in the city. For this reason, she tries to talk Barney into quitting his job and moving to a quieter, more rural area to start a chicken ranch. Meanwhile, at the police station, Fish and Chano have picked up a teenage drug addict as a mugging suspect. During the booking, the addict - Ramon Santos - gets Fish's gun and is holding the squad at bay. When Barney arrives at the station house, he is confronted by the gun-toting Ramon, who wants to shoot his way out....

  

Episode 2 - The Experience

Fish is convinced he is too old to be a detective and wants to retire, while Capt. Barney Miler is faced with the problem of finding a bomber who has been destroying public buildings. The Commissioner is breathing down Barney's neck to get a lead on the bomber, and Fish insists he can't keep up with the younger officers and wishes to retire. Barney tries to talk Fish out of his decision, but he has trouble keeping the older man awake to listen to his arguments.

  

Episode 3 - Snow Job

An exhibitionist in a snowstorm, an armored car drivers' strike and no heat create chaos at a police station. Chano picks up the thinly-clad Mr. Farber at a bus stop and Wojehowicz agrees to keep a department store's receipts overnight because of the strike. Chaos strikes when Farber tries to do away with himself and some of the money in Wojehowicz's custody disappears.

  

Episode 4 - Graft

Barney's squad is accused of being on the take and is under surveillance after a former member of the squad joins Internal Affairs, the department's self-policing unit. Kelly visits his former station house to say that some officers are being paid off, including someone from Barney's 12th Precinct. Barney tells his detectives that they cannot accept anything from anyone, even a free newspaper.

  

Episode 5 - Courtesans

Wojehowicz goes to Barney for advice when he becomes infatuated with one of the girls he arrested at Rose's during the monthly roundup. Wojehowicz finds Linda, the new girl at Rose's "Village-A­-Go-Go," very attractive in spite of her after-hours profession. Barney becomes concerned that Wojehowicz's interest might be con­strued as harassment.

  

Episode 6 - Stakeout

Barney and his squad stake out a drug drop from an apartment house - but he fears their cover will be blown by tenants dropping in visit. The 12th precinct detectives are assigned to the narcotics division to uncover a major movement of heroin. Barney worries about Fish getting a divorce, the tenants visiting the apartment, and the fact that he hasn't been able to shower in days.

     

Episode 7 - The Bureaucrat

A hard-drinking Washington bureaucrat gets drunk in Barney's precinct and becomes an overnight guest in the squad room cell. Mr. Heis, the government official, threatens Barney with the wrath of federal power if he is not released without bail. Barney's day is further complicated when Chano's apartment is robbed and Wojehowicz reports the local delicatessen to the Board of Health.

  

Episode 8 - Ms. Cop

The new woman cop in the precinct house gets assigned all the typing chores while the other detectives are out capturing bank robbers. Detective Janice Wentworth is convinced that it is because she is a woman that she is getting all the arrest reports to type while others are making the arrests. She is desperate when she is the only one left behind during an armed bank robbery.

  

Episode 9 - The Vigilante

Chano has to arrest an irate citizen who has been defending the neighborhood from muggers. After several muggings take place in the neighborhood, the police suddenly get assistance from a man who is beating up the muggers. Barney's boss, Lugar, and the District Attorney want to press charges against Mr. Escobar, the vigilante.

  

Episode 10 - The Guest

Barney's squad is assigned to protect a government witness, whom a crime syndicate wants to silence. Herb Edelman guest stars as Schuster, an accountant for the syndicate who has turned witness against the mob and is being moved around the city for his protection. Schuster is convinced the syndicate will discover where he is, and his fear is confirmed when a phone call for him is received at the station house.

  

Episode 11 - Escape Artist

Roscoe Lee Browne guest stars as a prison artist whom Barney's squad captures and must hold at the station house until he is return to prison. Harry the Snitch tells Barney that Charlie Jefferson is hiding out in the area. After the capture, Barney's problem is keeping Charlie in the precinct jail until he is picked up by the prison authorities.

  

Episode 12 - Hair

The new member of Barney's squad is an unconventional loner with a beard, who is cool about becoming a member of the precinct team. Guardeno, a former member of the Narcotics Squad, is transferred to Barney's division and arrives in fatigue jacket, gold earring and beard. Barney's job is to get the newcomer to fit in with the squad when Guardeno shows no interest in joining with the others.

  

Episode 13 - Hero

Chano becomes depressed after shooting two men in a bank robbery and Barney's wife, Elizabeth, makes a citizens arrest of an eight-year-old. Inspector Luger visits the precinct to congratulate Chano after the detective shoots a pair of bank robbers, but Chano is remorseful about the incident. Meanwhile, Elizabeth brings in an eight-year-old boy who has tried to hold her up with a pencil in an elevator.
