Episode 1 - Escape from New York

While suffering through a heat wave and the death of their air conditioner, Paul and Jamie take to the streets, only to find the situation there is even worse. While scanning her college catalog in search of a major, Jamie convinces Paul to leave town for the weekend to dine at a seaside restaurant where they once ate some wonderful clams. However, while borrowing her car, Jamie is upset to learn that Fran has been hired to fill her old job. After a surprise car phone call from his mother, Paul and Jamie reluctantly agree to help move an old couch to Lisa's apartment. Arriving at Sylvia's to help, they not only discover that Ira is now wearing a new toupee, but Paul learns of a former assistant who is directing a high profile film while his own career languishes. Then, as they all struggle move the couch, Fran's car, containing Murray, is towed away. Although Murray is happy to see Jamie, he gives Paul a less than enthusiastic reception at the car impound lot as they resume their trip to the beach. However, when Jamie insists on stopping to buy the weary dog a hamburger to make up for the inconvenience, Paul accidentally locks himself inside the car in the sweltering heat. When a locksmith finally frees Paul, the Buchmans are back on the road, although lost and unable to remember the name of their destination. Convincing Jamie that they shouldn't stop in order to start trying to get pregnant just so she won't have to deliver a baby in next summer's heat, Paul finally remembers the restaurant's name, only to find it has moved. Finally, after Paul and Jamie dejectedly return home, a take out menu stuck to their door reveals that the restaurant's new location is just around the corner from their apartment.

Episode 2 - Home

After two more in a series of disagreements with neighbors Hal and Maggie, Paul tells Jamie of a rumor about their building going co-op. When Hal and Maggie unexpectedly drop in to apologize, Paul suspects something is behind their sudden friendliness, while Jamie suggests joining them to walk their dogs and take in a movie. However, only after calling to charge the movie tickets to a credit card do the Buchmans discover that Maggie and Hal want to buy their apartment. Meanwhile, in spite of their owners, Murray falls for Hal and Maggie's purebred show dog, Sophie. Refusing their neighbor's generous offer for their apartment, Paul and Jamie head for the movie after inviting Ira and a date to meet them. However, when his mother arrives with Ira and learns of the coop rumor, she suggests that Paul and Jamie consider moving to her building. After pondering the idea of leaving the city for a quieter life in the suburbs, Paul learns that Murray is going to be a father. But, even though the apartment is bigger, nicer and cooler then their own, Paul and Jamie agree to ignore Sylvia's hints about moving while doing their best to keep Murray and Sophie apart. After another uncomfortable encounter in the hallway, Jamie suggests paying half of Sophie's veterinarian bill and Hal curtly accepts, but refuses to warm up to the Buchmans. However, when Sophie decides to have her puppies atop Paul's favorite sweater, the warring neighbors join together and call the building's super to assist in the delivery. Finally, after the puppies arrive, Paul and Jamie decide to stay and settle back into their conflict with Maggie and Hal.

Episode 3 - Til Death Do Us Part

Upon the death of a favorite relative, Paul joins Jamie and Lisa at their Uncle Van's funeral. However, when Jamie encourages him to say something at the service, Paul ends up insulting her entire family with his remarks. Yet, Paul soon finds he is the one who is upset when Jamie insists on taking Van's cremated remains home so she can find the best place to dispose of them. After dismissing his suggestion to scatter them in the Hudson River, Jamie is inspired when Paul recalls her late uncle's love of horse racing and decides to place Van's ashes in the winner's circle at the track. Tracking him down at a Gambler's Anonymous meeting, Paul persuades Ira to set them up with a race horse owner who could get them into the winner's circle. However, while trying to keep Ira from making any bets, Paul is mistaken for a racing insider by their host and horse owner, Maurice. Despite every indication that About To Be Glue is a sure loser, Jamie bets on him hoping for a trip to the winner's circle for Van -- even as a fractured conversation with Paul convinces Maurice to call off his own heavy bet on the horse. As Lisa loses Van's ashes at the concession stand, Ira struggles with the temptation to gamble again. So, while Paul and Jamie watch About To Be Glue get off to a dubious start, Lisa hurries to find where she left Uncle Van. When Maurice's horse makes a miraculous recovery and ends up taking the race, Jamie is the big winner. Certain she heard her Uncle's voice, Jamie heads to the winner's circle with Maurice as Van's urn mysteriously finds its way into the track's trophy case.

Episode 4 - When I'm Sixty-Four

Arriving home with a new armoire, Jamie is surprised to find it doesn't fit through their apartment doorway. Calling on their super, Mr. Wicker, for help, Paul begins to suspect that his wife's poor eyesight caused her to misread the measurements. Then, after her failed attempt to program their VCR, he suggests that Jamie get glasses. Meanwhile, Paul and Jamie discover Wicker has a crush on one of the building's tenants. After Paul catches him with a pair of wire cutters, Wicker admits to vandalizing Mrs. Stern's doorbell just for the chance to come and fix it. And when he says he has been having suggestive dreams about her, Jamie and Paul encourage Wicker to speak with his wife about the infatuation. As a result, the Buchmans are forced to take him in when he follows their advice and Mrs. Wicker throws him out. Meanwhile, a trip to the eyeglass store gets Paul in trouble when Jamie catches him staring at a beautiful salesgirl. As she and Paul do their best to adjust to having Wicker around, Jamie avoids wearing her new glasses. When another visit to get new contact lenses revives the issue of the salesgirl, Paul and Jamie are forced into a debate about harmless flirting. Mrs. Wicker then comes looking for her husband. And despite their claim that he misses her, Paul and Jamie cannot persuade her to take him back in. However, when she comes back later and Wicker is finally allowed to go home, he reminds the Buchmans that making up after fighting has helped to keep his marriage together.

Episode 5 - Legacy

Expecting his parents to arrive for dinner at any moment, Paul finally learns he has a new job. But instead of the independent feature film or television soap opera he was hoping for, it is to direct a film about airline seat belts. While waiting to see a TV commercial promoting his dad's big sale, Paul promises Burt that he and Jamie will be at the store to help out as always. Yet after seeing the commercial, Jamie decides to revive her public relations career and help her father-in-law. As Paul reluctantly proceeds with his film, Jamie throws herself into the project, getting a sandwich named after Burt, preparing press releases and hiring a celebrity guest, all to promote the sale. In fact, Jamie is so excited by the work that she decides to start her own P.R. business while still going to school. Yet, despite anything she says, Paul thinks she is simply doing it because he doesn't make enough money. Then, as everyone else arrives on time, Jamie worries when her celebrity, former New York Yankee Sloopy Dunbar, is late for the sale. When Burt mentions he is retiring, Paul excuses himself in order to avoid any discussion of his taking over the store. But Paul learns that he is giving it to Ira instead. And even though he didn't want the store in the first place, Paul is offended by not having it offered. Meanwhile, Sloopy finally arrives and demands his money up front before setting out to convince Fran to join him for a date. Sensing Paul is upset, Jamie convinces him to talk with his dad about it. Only then does Paul realize that Burt thinks he is too successful to ever want the store. Finally, as the sale and Burt's career both draw to a close, Fran joins Sloopy for dinner.

Episode 6 - Pandora's Box

As Jamie struggles to get her new business going with her one and only client, Ira, Paul discovers he is being considered for a grant to produce a documentary on the history of television. But when he needs to do research, Jamie complains about the noise and suggests he try watching TV in the bedroom. When Paul notes that their bedroom doesn't have cable and refuses to pay to have it installed, Fran helps Jamie do what she and everyone else does -- steal it. Though surprised with a television in their bedroom, Paul makes it clear that he is totally against cable theft, forcing Jamie to lie about how it got there. But when the reception isn't what he thinks it should be, Jamie's secret is jeopardized when Paul calls the cable company to fix it. With Jamie forced to come clean about the illegal cable, Paul insists they disconnect it before the repairman arrives. But when they are caught in the act, Paul points out all the others who are hooked up illegally and the repairman disconnects virtually everyone in the building. The Buchmans are then forced to endure the complaints of their irate neighbors. Even when they are out for dinner with Ira, they cannot escape their wrath. Unable to take anymore, Jamie and Paul announce to the restaurant's TV-deprived patrons that they are going to restore their cable service. However, when he tries to reconnect them, Ira ends up causing a city-wide blackout and sparks another round of complaints from their building's increasingly angry tenants.

Episode 7 - The Ride Home

Upon arriving for Fran's first birthday party since her divorce, Paul and Jamie find her in a state of panic about the event. Before long, they run into Bob and Doris, a married couple whose life together has made them eerily alike one another. The encounter makes the Buchmans realize that they, too, are merging into a single identity. But when they decide it might be a good time to be seen enjoying the party on their own, everyone else thinks they are fighting. Meanwhile, Paul agrees to pose as a doctor to help Ira meet a woman, while the unexpected appearance of an old boyfriend takes Jamie by surprise. Pretending to be a doctor turns out to be a big disadvantage for Paul when he meets Carol, a network television programming executive who was hoping he was Paul Buchman the director. Deciding he can't let the opportunity get away, Paul tells Carol the truth, only to have her lose interest in him altogether' Yet he is persistent and, after revealing some private gestures he and Jamie use to communicate, Paul is invited to come in and discuss his work. When Lisa asks her permission to start dating her ex-boyfriend, Jamie learns that Alan's version of their break up differs wildly from hers. Challenging his recollections, Jamie then badgers Alan into accepting her version of the story as they agree to never speak with each other again. Unaware that he divulged some of their secrets in order to get the appointment at NBC, Jamie unknowingly offends Carol. During their cab ride home, Paul accuses Jamie of ruining his chance at directing a TV miniseries, while she complains about his lack of discretion. Finally, Jamie agrees to make up with her husband, unaware that he has invited Alan to dinner next week.

Episode 8 - Giblets for Murray

It's Thanksgiving, and Paul and Jamie are hosting a big dinner for both their families. Though Paul is confident that they are covered, Jamie isn't so sure. First, Lisa calls to remind her she is a vegetarian, so Jamie sends Paul to the store for something to feed her. And when Paul's mom and dad arrive early, Jamie is surprised to find that Sylvia not only brought food, but has reservations about eating buffet style and wonders why there are no marshmallows in the sweet potato mousse. When her family arrives with more food, too, Jamie begins to see all her plans for dinner quickly going down the drain. She and Paul are then forced to make another trip to the store, where they realize that their plans for the meal are slipping out of their control. And when they return home to find their buffet has been dismantled, they decide to do something about it. But, as they are lecturing their parents about wanting to do dinner their way, Murray takes care of the turkey all by himself. As Paul sneaks away to find another turkey, Jamie tries to keep their guests distracted until he returns. But the first replacement bird mysteriously disappears from the hallway, and then Jamie throws the second out the window so as not to reveal their secret. Although Ira and Fran volunteer to get the next one, it too ends up on the street below. Finally, after Paul and Jamie go out for another, they return to find everyone ready to eat, but their problems far from over.

Episode 9 - Once More, With Feeling

During an after sex conversation, Jamie concludes that Paul doesn't like her new haircut or her meatloaf, while he is convinced that she thinks he is getting fat and that she hated their trip to Aruba. As a result, Jamie takes out her frustration on Ira during a meeting to discuss her latest promotion for his store. And things are no better for Paul, who begins to doubt the honesty of his editor, Sid. However, when Ira complains about Jamie's short temper, Paul covers by blaming it on Fran. As the Buchmans struggle to agree on what to do for dinner, Fran learns that her latest project has been completely changed by the client. Making matters worse, Ira claims that Jamie is mad at her. Wanting to know why, Fran calls Jamie. But, when she catches them in the middle of an unsuccessful attempt to have sex, Jamie hangs up, reinforcing Fran's belief that something is wrong. Turning to Lisa to learn the truth, she is led to believe that Jamie is upset about her going back to her old job. As Paul and Jamie continue trying to jump start their flagging sexual relationship, Fran arrives to announce she has quit her job to save their friendship. However, Jamie insists that there is nothing wrong and blames the entire misunderstanding on Paul's being upset with Ira. After Fran passes along the news, Ira tries contacting Paul, only to interrupt another attempt at intimacy with Jamie. He, too, turns to Lisa and concludes it must be about being given his uncle's sporting goods store. Confronting Paul about his alleged problem, Ira offers to make him a partner in the store. Finally. with nowhere else to turn, Jamie decides to rekindle their sexual relationship the only way she knows how -- with some role playing between her and Paul.

Episode 10 - The City

Episode 11 - Our Fifteen Minutes

Along with five other documentary filmmakers, Paul has agreed to turn his camera on himself and Jamie for a fifteen minute film about their everyday life. Upset with the short notice, Jamie decides that their home could use a little panache. After asking Fran to bring over a valuable painting she owns, Jamie tries redecorating their apartment with flowers stolen from a neighbor and an issue of "Scientific American" magazine for their coffee table. Although Paul will have none of it and insists they make it as realistic as possible, with the cameras rolling, the Buchmans cannot loosen up. Worried there is no way she can compete with the other filmmakers, which include a gay couple and an ex-con who married a junkie, Jamie decides she needs to be more interesting, too. But her attempt is interrupted when Ira arrives and uses the opportunity to plug his sporting goods store. After insisting that they both act natural, Paul turns the camera back on, only to have Fran arrive with her painting. Telling her and Ira leave, Paul must then convince Jamie that she doesn't need to hire an actress to play her in the film. Returning to the film, Jamie is embarrassed when she is caught retrieving a coffee filter from the trash, while Paul balks at admitting he owns a pair of leopard underwear. However, when Lisa shows up unexpectedly unaware that the cameras are running, she quickly becomes the movie's center of attention. Finding a receipt for the camera equipment, Jamie realizes that Paul has known about the film for weeks. Her complaint then prompts an unprecedented display of candor as Paul and Jamie admit truths that they had never disclosed to one another. However, in the wake of their honesty, they finally agree it would be best to sanitize their lives for the film.

Episode 12 - Just Our Dog

After getting a look at the Buchman's dog, Paul's clients decide that they want Murray in a commercial he is directing for them. And, when it is shown on television, the Buchmans are suddenly besieged with calls from Murray's adoring fans. Although Paul is against the idea, Jamie pressures him into agreeing to meet with an agent who is interested in their dog. As Jamie worries about Murray being disappointed with his career, their dog dreams of a "Tonight Show" appearance with host Jay Leno and his guest, supermodel Rachel Hunter. When Murray's career takes off, Jamie becomes increasingly distracted and is incapable of following through on her work with Fran. In fact, when Paul begins to find Jamie's preoccupation a problem, he decides that he is jealous of the dog's sudden success. When Paul balks at her joining Murray on an overnight trip to shoot a new music video, Jamie hires Lisa to take the dog instead. But, they soon find out that a night without Murray to keep them warm just isn't the same. After Lisa quits her job as Murray's assistant, Paul and Jamie must take him to an important audition for a part in the new TV series. However, after repeatedly missing his cue, Murray doesn't take kindly to his agent's admonition and bites him in the leg. Finally, despite ruining his career with the incident, Murray still dreams of his "Tonight Show" appearance.

Episode 13 - How to Fall In Love

When he's hired to write and direct a videotape on dating, Paul's preoccupation with the project begins to annoy Jamie. However, when she offers some tips on what she has done in the past to get her man, Paul is only more unnerved by the assignment. To help with his research, Jamie suggests that they pretend they've never met and that Paul try and pick her up. Meanwhile, back at the Buchman's apartment, Ira has run into Jamie's classmate, Susannah, who has dropped by early for a visit. When Paul overtures fail to impress Jamie, she decides to show him a thing or two about picking someone up in a bar. Although Paul refuses to believe that her approach will work, he is more than a little surprised when Jamie attracts another man. But Paul's taking notes soon scares him off. Meanwhile, uncomfortable with leaving Susannah at his cousin's apartment alone, Ira decides that he must stick around just to be on the safe side. Still in search of ideas for the video, Paul demonstrates how he used Murray to meet women. Jamie counters with a ploy of her own, asking Paul for help with something on a high shelf at the market. Paul responds by using one pay phone to call Jamie on another and ask for a date. And, while Jamie and Paul are finding it hard to come up with novel ways to meet, after initially getting off on the wrong foot, Ira and Susannah find they're attracted to one another. Finally, when Paul finally finds an approach that works wonders with his wife, he and Jamie are surprised to see Ira and Susannah leaving the apartment together.

Episode 14 - Mad About You, Pt. 1

It's 1991 and Paul and Jamie are planning their wedding. There's a lot to think about and do, from selecting a date and sending the invitations, to finding a caterer, choosing clothes and hiring a band. However, they're having a hard time keeping the guest list under control, especially since their parents keep finding old friends and acquaintances to invite. And everyone is more than willing to give them advice. However, when Jamie discovers that Sylvia Buchman's name is misspelled on the invitations, she and Paul are forced to act ... and act fast. Finding that Paul already mailed the invitations, Jamie drags him out to stop them from being sent. And, after successfully bribing the letter carrier with an invitation of his own, they get them back -- only to have Sylvia drop by unexpectedly and discover the mistake anyway. Meanwhile, Paul lobbies heavily to use Ira's band, but Jamie wants to keep looking. In addition, Paul and Jamie are also supposed to be writing their own vows, though they haven't started yet. And, as the presents begin to arrive, producing a wealth of gravy boats, everyone who was invited seems to be coming, making their crisis with the guest list even worse. The tension mounts, aggravating Jamie's smoking habit and causing Paul to spend more and more time seeking refuge in the TV. However, it's when the families meet to sample the caterer's menu that Paul and Jamie begin to have second thoughts. As if she hasn't enough to think about already, Jamie discovers that it is customary for the bride and groom to get each other gifts. And then there's the matter of a band. But when Paul asks Ira, Jamie takes offense but agrees to hear them play their next date -- at a state prison.

Episode 15 - Mad About You, Pt. 2

With one week to go, Jamie and Paul's wedding plans shift into high gear. But Jamie has replaced her craving for cigarettes with food, causing her to gain weight. And, as the gravy boats pile up and the guest list swells, Paul discovers that his tailor isn't all he was thought to be. To top it all off, Paul's sister Debbie has suddenly separated from her husband, casting a uneasy pall over the upcoming wedding. While getting fitted for her dress, Jamie's weight gain becomes quite apparent, and she's not at all happy about her new size. But when Paul suggests that they skip the ceremony and just get married on their own, things take a turn for the worse. He accidentally opens Jamie's gift for him, and then admits he didn't get anything for her. At their respective bachelor parties, Paul and Jamie each seek solace from their friends and relatives. As Jamie looks for some reassurance about her weight, Paul seeks advice on how to remedy his mistake with the gift. Finally, after getting some sage advice from a stripper, Paul uses a portable phone to call and console his bride-to-be. The night before their wedding brings even more problems, including last minute revisions of the seating plans and Jamie's unruly complexion. While the rehearsal dinner is supposed to be a joyous affair, it only heightens their anxieties, especially after Jamie's father barely acknowledges Paul's gift of some hard-to-get Cuban cigars. Learning that tradition dictates spending their last night before the wedding apart proves too much for Paul. After breaking down and calling her from Ira's, Paul and Jamie meet at a street corner where their minister, who also happens to be a utility repairman, agrees to a private ceremony right then and there. Finally, having gotten married their own way, they gladly proceed with the ceremony for their friends and family who are none the wiser.

Episode 16 - The Alan Brady Show

Upon completing his new documentary on the history of television, Paul is excited when legendary TV comic Alan Brady agrees to narrate. Arriving at home with the good news, he is disappointed to find Jamie is going to be late for a dinner to secure the deal with Alan. Yet, after Paul gets off to a rocky start with the irascible comedian, Jamie's arrival at the restaurant seems to salvage the evening. Meanwhile, with her father away at a butcher's convention, Jamie must entertain her mother during her frequent trips into the city. As he presses his editor Sid about why Alan is so mean all the time, Paul is surprised to find that the comedian is unhappy with how little time the film devotes to his TV career. As a result, Alan refuses to do the narration unless Paul revises the film. Paul then tries to come up with another narrator, but soon discovers that most of his choices have passed away. Meanwhile, after a tense lunch with her mom and sister, Jamie tries to explain just how bad a day she had. But Paul is too preoccupied with his latest discovery -- an old episode of "The Alan Brady Show" which featured his mother-in-law Theresa in one of the comic's skits. With her daughters surprised by the tape, Theresa says she must have forgotten to mention her brief stint in television. And, when she reveals that her sister Lolly was actually Alan's girlfriend, Paul gets an idea. After Aunt Lolly notes that she often used jealousy to keep him in line, Paul invites Alan for dinner to make one last pitch for his film. Enlisting Jamie and Sid in the effort, Paul says he has already hired rival comedian Sid Caesar to do the narration instead. And just as Aunt Lolly predicted, Alan suddenly changes his mind and finally agrees to do the film himself.

Episode 17 - Mad Without You

With Jamie in Connecticut for a weekend with her dad, Paul is ready to play. However, he soon finds out that single life isn't all he remembered it to be. After Ira heads off for a date, Paul returns home to find Fran in his shower. Calling Jamie, he learns that Fran often showers at their apartment after going to the gym. But that's only the beginning. Before the afternoon is over, Paul calls Jamie with several more questions. However, it's when he doesn't call to ask if she donated their bed to a charity thrift store that Paul finds himself in trouble. While talking with his neighbors the next morning, Paul begins to suspect that the Conway's bed was the one that was supposed to be picked up and not his. Though not wanting to tell Jamie what happened, Paul first confirms that she didn't order them a new bed before heading off to find the one he gave away. With Ira along, their first stop is the opera where they interrupt the performance to quiz Hal and Maggie about which charity was supposed to have picked up their bed. Even after explaining the mix up at the thrift store, Paul learns it will cost him $400 to get his bed back. Paul then negotiates with Hal to buy his bed so he can trade it for his own. However, after arriving with the Conway's bed in tow, Paul's plan is derailed when he finds a customer ready to buy his. When he cannot persuade him to consider another, a bidding war forces Paul to spend $500 more to get it back. But Paul finally loses his race against the clock when he cannot get the bed back together before Jamie comes home ready to use it.

Episode 18 - Purseona

While Jamie and Fran prepare to meet with an important new client, Paul packs for a trip to the Yukon to film a dogsled race. With too little room in his suitcase, his passport in their safe deposit box and Lisa having borrowed the gloves he wanted to take, Paul begins to worry about getting there at all. Offering to help get everything together on time, Jamie assures him that everything will be fine. However, when Lisa shows up after blowing a job interview and without the gloves, Jamie loses her cool and sends her sister packing. Yet, in the confusion, Lisa leaves with Jamie's purse, Paul's passport and the money for his trip. Left only with the contents of Lisa's purse to go on, Paul insists that Jamie find her sister so he can make his plane. After taking the subway to her uptown apartment, Jamie finds Lisa's appointment book that indicates that she's downtown for an appointment with her analyst. But when they try to sneak back through the subway turnstile without paying, the Buchmans are caught by the police and escorted to the street. At the therapist's office, only after interrupting a session with another patient do Paul and Jamie learn that Lisa has gone to replace the missing gloves. As Paul and Jamie pursue her in the rain, Lisa arrives at the store where, after getting the gloves, she falls into a job interview. And, thanks to the contents of Jamie's purse, she impresses the manager enough to be hired on the spot. In the confusion Paul and Jamie just miss seeing Lisa. With little time left before the flight to Canada, Jamie insists on picking up Fran's car and heading to the airport. However, when a disheveled and disorganized Jamie bursts in on the meeting with their new client, Fran is appalled. Finally, while Lisa arrives at the airport to meet them before the flight, she cannot keep Paul from mistaking her stun gun for an electric razor.

Episode 19 - Two Tickets to Paradise

The Buchmans have been given an all expenses paid vacation by Paul's parents with just one catch -- they must pretend to be Burt and Sylvia in order to go. At their tropical resort, Paul and Jamie discover that they'll have to keep up appearances when the social director informs them that she's planned out an itinerary perfectly suited to Sylvia and Burt. As a result, they end up taking the vacation Paul's parents have only dreamed about. It's when Jamie decides to try out her French on their waiter that she gets carried away and claims that she and Paul are from France. Though Paul isn't so sure about the idea, he has no choice but to play along when Jamie tells another guest that they are circus performers. Although it's fun pretending to be everybody from a rodeo clown to the inventor of instant soup to a professional bowler, Paul and Jamie begin having a hard time keeping their stories straight. Yet, once they've decided to stop pretending, they learn that the social director has been getting requests from guests wanting to sit with their various personas at dinner. Realizing they've been caught, Jamie stalls further inquiry by claiming that Paul is insane, causing all the hotel's staff and guests to avoid him at all costs. Unaware of what has happened, Paul thinks nothing of how he's perceived and inadvertently convinces everyone that he really is mad. Yet, once he learns the unfortunate truth, Paul is unable to convince the guests otherwise and reluctantly embraces his new role.

Episode 20 - My Boyfriend's Back

With Paul spending his nights filming a milkman for his latest film and Jamie committed to endless meetings, the Buchmans are finding it harder than ever to spend time together. However, Jamie is in for a real shock when she discovers that a new client has teamed her and Fran with ex-boyfriend and artist Alan Tofsky. Despite a warning from Fran, Jamie insists that working with Alan won't pose any problems. Yet their behavior suggests otherwise, and it isn't long before they're disagreeing about everything, including their new client's ad campaign. On top of having his schedule upended by the milkman's nighttime deliveries, Paul must also deal with Jamie's dilemma. Though a sleep-deprived Paul claims he trusts Jamie's judgment, Lisa and Fran agree that working with Alan is a prescription for disaster -- especially after seeing how the ad campaign for Ralphy's Restaurant is, or isn't, shaping up. But it's when Ira realizes that Alan is also the newly famous comic book artist everyone is talking about that Jamie's situation takes a turn for the worse. And despite an effort by Ira and Lisa to keep her from learning the truth, Jamie discovers that she's a dead ringer for the evil villain in his new comic book. While Jamie insists she's fine, Paul and Fran do what they can to prepare for the impending crisis. Yet, when she is increasingly recognized on the street as the evil Queen Talon, Jamie finally snaps and heads for the comic book store where Alan is signing autographs. Letting her anger boil over, she points out for the benefit of his assembled fans how many of the queen's evil deeds which were based on events from their relationship. Finally, upon returning home without the pizza she was sent to get, Jamie is comforted by Paul as she imagines Queen Talon getting revenge against Alan.

Episode 21 - Cake Fear

Though Paul is getting ready to celebrate, he can't help but think that this birthday will be like so many others -- a disaster. Jamie suggests thinking positively and not dwell on the past, but Paul senses his worst fears are being confirmed when Ira offers to kill himself to make up for the fact that his cat ate his date's pet bird. This incident prompts Paul to recall his last birthday when Lisa gave him a powerful sleeping pill just before a big surprise party Jamie arranged for him. After recalling the year Jamie thought hosting a birthday party would be just the thing to help Fran take her mind off her failing marriage, Paul remembers how a big snowstorm ruined another celebration. Thinking back to his first birthday with Jamie, he then remembers how being excluded from his traditional birthday walk resulted in her almost leaving him. And, only after Paul admitted to spending the walk thinking about how wonderful life would be with her did Jamie reconsider the hasty decision. Back in the present, Jamie talks Ira in from his perch on the window ledge, though Susannah still isn't convinced that death isn't the appropriate payback for the loss of her bird. And, while Paul sees the whole episode in the light of his long history of failed birthday celebrations, Jamie insists he isn't cursed and that they all try to have a good time. But when Murray chases Ira's cat right out the apartment's open window, Paul fears are, once again, confirmed.

Episode 22 - Up In Smoke, Pt. 1

After receiving their anniversary gift from his mother, Paul and Jamie abandon their agreement not to get each other anything. Jamie offers to make him a list, but Paul insists he knows her well enough to pick out something on his own. However, as they each set out to shop, Jamie turns to Ira for help, while Paul consults with Fran and Lisa. Jamie finally gives up and sends Ira to get something while, at the department store where Lisa works, Paul is finally persuaded to buy his wife an expensive silver serving tray. When Lisa shows up with a bunch of glass grapes instead of the tray, Paul must come up with another gift on the spot. And when Ira arrives with Paul's gift, Jamie is shocked to discover it's a vintage poster from "The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman," the first movie her husband ever saw. Serious about the fact that it's the best gift he's ever received, Paul then presents Jamie with a piece of paper which entitles her to "one magical night. " But when she's certain it means reservations for all of them to have dinner at the ultra exclusive Twilight Room, Paul is in trouble. At the Twilight Room, Ira sends the women off to the bar so he and Paul can persuade the maitre d' to give them a table. Yet, without a reservation, they stand no chance of getting in and soon are forced to leave. Ending up at a loud, crowded and smoky rock club where Ira's girlfriend Susannah performs, Paul finally explains the mix-up with Jamie's gift. Though upset that he sought help, Jamie is on shaky ground herself when Paul reveals that Ira consulted with him about the present she claims to have bought. Jamie is certain that the entire episode has called their marriage into question. And when they find that the newsstand where they first met has burned down, the Buchmans are puzzled by evidence which suggests they never met and never married.

Episode 23 - Money Changes Everything

Between starting a catalog for his sporting goods store and having a new girlfriend, Susannah, things seem to be going Ira's way. But when his ex-wife Marianne suddenly arrives after the death of her latest husband, a European count, Paul is certain things are about to take a turn for the worse. Although neither Ira, Jamie or Susannah seem upset with her sudden appearance, Paul is unhappy, especially when Marianne offers to loan Ira the money to finance his latest venture. But when she also produces some tickets for a big basketball game, even Paul is tempted to change his opinion. While hoping to persuade Ira to change his mind, Paul tries convincing Susannah that Marianne's reappearance means nothing. Yet, as they are preparing to leave for the game, Paul discovers that Ira has accepted Marianne's offer of a loan. But when Paul refuses to sign the papers, the two cousins end up not speaking with one another. As a result, a disgruntled Paul ends up in a fight at the game with New York Knick's star Patrick Ewing. After five days of Paul and Ira not talking to each other, Jamie has had enough, especially since she and Fran are working on Ira's new catalog. However, when an argument reveals that neither Jamie nor Ira liked one another at first, even they end up not speaking to one another. When Paul finally agrees to sign the loan papers, Marianne sweetens the deal with a loan to finish his latest film. Seeing it as the way to help his cousin, he accepts and then gives the check to Ira. Finally, to get the money he needs to finish his film and pay back Marianne, Paul considers a lawsuit against Patrick Ewing.

Episode 24 - Up In Smoke, Pt. 2

Upon finding that the newsstand where they first met has burned down, Paul and Jamie realize they've been transported back in time. Agreeing to meet up in an hour, Paul sets off for the address on his driver's license and finds that he's living with Ira. Meanwhile, Jamie discovers that she's a partner in her own P.R. firm with an overweight and neurotic Fran as her assistant. And when she expresses a good deal of surprise at his arrival, Jamie's old boyfriend Alan decides she must be seeing someone else and breaks up with her on the spot. Realizing there isn't anyone else, Jamie settles into her job and her new persona as she moves in with Lisa. Meanwhile, with Paul staying at home with Murray, Ira heads off for his date for the evening a new woman he just met .... Jamie! As Ira is getting to know more about her, Paul has second thoughts and shows up at the club where Susannah approaches him. And it's when Ira comes to the bar to get Jamie a drink that things get interesting. After accidentally bumping into Susannah, Ira learns that her band is in need of a new keyboard player. And seeing that she's with Paul, Ira asks him to keep Jamie busy for a few minutes. But when Paul says he's going back home, Ira placates Jamie before joining Susannah's band on stage. After sending Jamie on her way, Ira then sets off to meet Susannah for breakfast. Meanwhile, unable to sleep, Jamie goes out for a newspaper, as does Paul. And, after wandering from newsstand to newsstand in search of something to satisfy them, they finally run into each other before being transported back into their real lives once and for all.

Episode 25 - The Test

As they are waiting for a bus together, Jamie spots a magazine's quiz, "Bliss or Blunder: Perfect Mate or Big Mistake?" And while Paul would rather not, Jamie encourages him to answer the questions and rate their relationship. After an inquiry about love at first sight prompts a look back at how they met, the Buchmans proceed to review their history together, including a controversial experiment with virtual reality, a look at each other's families and how much power Murray holds over their household. But a debate over scoring themselves before the test is through causes Paul and Jamie to miss the bus they have been waiting for so patiently. Left to wait, the Buchmans move on to questions of sex, petty annoyances and their terms of endearment. And after discussing just how safe they are, or aren't, in their marriage, Paul and Jamie look back at some of their faults, including just how truthful they've been with each other. Finally, even though their score would suggest they are ill suited to be husband and wife, Paul and Jamie consciously choose to ignore the quiz results just as their bus arrives.
