When well-meaning 23-year-old Jimmy Chance has a one-night stand with a wanted felon (guest star Bijou Phillips), he ends up being a dad to a bouncing baby girl. Virginia, Burt, Jimmy and Sabrina head to Las Vegas to attend Virginia's cousin Delilah’s (guest star Amy Sedaris) wedding. Virginia is embarrassed that she didn't have the big wedding that her snooty cousin will have, so Burt attempts to make it up to her. Meanwhile, Jimmy tries to make a move on Sabrina who wants to go wild in Vegas.

Virginia, Burt, Jimmy, Sabrina, Maw Maw and Hope camp out on the front lawn after their house becomes tented for termites, but getting caught in rain is the least of their problems. After learning that Hope hit a boy at day care, the family attempts to stop arguing out of fear that she will follow in her serial killer mother’s footsteps.

Things get interesting when the real homeowners return early, and Burt’s folks get a taste of what life is really like for Burt and Virginia.

When the National Invention Convention Extravaganza comes to town, Virginia encourages the family to submit their own inventions that could bring home a large cash prize. Burt teams with the family’s neighbor Andrew (guest star Ethan Suplee) and invents unusually flavored yogurts, while Jimmy partners with Sabrina to develop a new baby mop. When convention day arrives the competition between each team escalates as they pitch their inventions to Andrew Dice Clay (guest-starring as himself). During the competition, the family ends up realizing family and friends are what matter the most.

Burt encourages Jimmy to be more of a daredevil. So when Jimmy’s co-worker, Frank, invites him to a house party, Jimmy jumps at the chance to unleash his bolder side. As Jimmy and his new pal spend more time together, they discover they shared a common high school bully. In a series of flashbacks, Jimmy and Frank look back at their unhappy high school years as Young Jimmy (guest star Greyson Chance) and Young Frank. But when the two try to take down their old nemesis, they’re surprised to learn that the bully has changed.

In a nod to the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the Chances go to the movies and are surprised when they discover that the film they’re watching is strikingly similar to their own family life. Meanwhile, Jimmy is transported into a cinematic dreamlike state and experiences the world as though he never met Hope’s serial killer mom Lucy (guest star Bijou Phillips). But when he returns to reality, he soon realizes that life without Hope would not be nearly as sweet.

  

Episode 33 - Season 2, Episode 11: Mrs. Smartypants

After Hope shows promising signs of being a baby genius, Jimmy becomes inspired to go back to school and prepare for the G.E.D. exam. But Jimmy is surprised to find his former high school teacher, Mr. Swift (guest star Fred Willard), instructing the G.E.D. class, and continuing to give Jimmy a hard time in the classroom. Meanwhile, Burt and Virginia worry that Jimmy could become the smartest family member if he passed the test, so they decide to take the G.E.D exam too. But they soon realize they’ll need all the extra tutoring they can get.

Burt becomes obsessed with gambling when he believes he can reclaim all the items he lost when he bet away all the Chance’s belongings nearly 20 years ago. Worried about his bad habit reemerging, Virginia and Jimmy try to intervene but soon get swept up in the betting frenzy and develop their own gambling habit. But their luck begins to run out when they miss Shelley’s staged play written by Sabrina and starring Hope as the lead.

Burt is buried in receipts and finances during corporate tax season, so he hires Barney as his business manager to help keep him organized. Caught up in the stress, Burt makes a hurtful comment about Virginia's career, prompting her to seek a new business venture and be her own boss. But when Virginia becomes a tarot card reader and predicts the future for the residents of New Natesville, she realizes that her fortunes may have more power than she thinks. Meanwhile, Jimmy is kept on pins and needles as Sabrina decides whether or not to move to Africa with her boyfriend Wyatt.

Jimmy’s spirits are low when Sabrina’s relationship with Wyatt becomes serious, so Virginia and Burt convince him to create a make-believe girlfriend to make her jealous. Barney invites Jimmy to his improv class, where he meets Mary-Louise (guest star Ashley Tisdale) who agrees to play along with his plan to win over Sabrina. But when their acting becomes too convincing and Sabrina falls for their fake relationship, all plans might backfire on Jimmy.

As Jimmy and Sabrina’s relationship continues to grow, they both begin to realize that they’ve been hiding some of their habits from each other. They agree to let their guards down and start acting like themselves completely, but when Sabrina reveals an unusual childhood phobia, Jimmy decides to help her overcome her fear in a startling way. Meanwhile, Burt reveals a habit he’s been keeping from Virginia for years.

Sabrina is arrested after participating in an Occupy Natesville protest and is sentenced to two weeks in prison. One of the prison attendant's (Special Guest Star) claims to be a friend from her past and will stop at nothing to make Sabrina’s stay in the slammer as dreadful as possible until she remembers their childhood memories. Meanwhile, the mayor of Natesville grants Virginia three wishes after she helps her avoid a public scandal, but when Jimmy turns down the mayor's advances, Sabrina's chances of being exonerated are put at risk.

When a raccoon decides to take residency under the Chance’s porch, Virginia and Sabrina work together to try and lure the critter out. Meanwhile, Hope’s misbehavior has become such an issue that Virginia and Burt suggest that it might be time for Jimmy to spank her, since it worked so well for them when he was younger. However, when Burt reveals a secret to Jimmy about his childhood, it answers unsolved mysteries and prompts a new outlook on teamwork and parenting.

Virginia agrees to be a live-in house sitter for her client and look after a troublesome teenage girl. When she learns that the teen and her boyfriend are ready to take their relationship to the next level, she and Burt try to use their experience to convince them against it. But Burt makes a confession that comes as a surprise to Virginia. Meanwhile, Maw Maw once again confuses Jimmy with her late husband Wilfrid, so Jimmy and Sabrina play along.

When attention-seeking Sarah Louise (guest star Vivica A. Fox) announces her plans to run for another term as chairperson of the Natesville church group, Burt decides to run against her. To test Burt's ability to handle a community task, Sarah Louise assigns him pig-sitting duties for a blind church member. But when the guide pig accidentally becomes family dinner, Burt must find and train a replacement pig before Sarah Louise finds out and ruins his chances of being elected.

When Jimmy finds out Sabrina has a new attractive study partner (guest star Travis Van Winkle), Virginia convinces him that they are doing more than just studying. Meanwhile, Burt develops an obsession with a wall figurine.

In a very special “mockumentary” episode, Nancy Grace (guest-starring as herself) examines the “real story” of Hope’s mom, serial killer Lucy Carlisle (guest star Phillips). Grace interviews each member of the Chance family, all of whom relay personal accounts of exactly what happened when Jimmy met Lucy back in 2008. At the end of the program, the Chances are shocked to find out developing details about Lucy.

Following the revelations of the “Inside Probe” expose of their family history, the Chances are put on trial in a fight to retain custody of Hope.

The Chance family meets Sabrina’s mother, Tamara (guest star Melanie Griffith), at the funeral of Sabrina’s grandmother, Nana (guest star Tippi Hedren). Nana’s last will and testament, revealed in a video she recorded before she died, has a big impact on Jimmy and Sabrina’s relationship.

  

Episode 46 - Season 3, Episode 2: Throw Maw Maw from the House - Part 1

A social worker visits the Chance house to investigate a claim, but when she spots some of the tactics the family employs to keep Maw Maw under control, she starts to suspect the Chances of elder abuse and threatens to take her away. Meanwhile Sabrina and Jimmy test the boundaries of their new engagement when Sabrina wants Jimmy to part with his beloved T-shirt.

  

Episode 47 - Season 3, Episode 3: Throw Maw Maw from the House - Part 2

In the conclusion of a special two-part episode, the Chance family devises a ridiculously intricate plan to break Maw Maw out of a state-run nursing facility. The plan backfires when Virginia notices how gentle the staff is with Maw Maw, and begins to think that she might be better off in her new home. Meanwhile, Jimmy fears that he’s destined to go crazy in his old age, and interrogates the other elderly patients for tips on staying sane.

  

Episode 48 - Season 3, Episode 4: If a Ham Falls in the Woods…

Jimmy and Sabrina attend a marriage retreat lead by a priest (guest star Jordan) before they get married. Not wanting to miss out on a free vacation, Virginia and Burt pose as a newly engaged couple, so they can attend too. It becomes a true family affair when Sabrina’s mom Tamara (guest star Griffith) and her young lover, Roberto (guest star Valderrama), tag along. Meanwhile, Barney forgoes his birthday plans to babysit Maw Maw.

  

Episode 49 - Season 3, Episode 5: Don't Ask, Don't Tell Me What To Do

It’s Halloween, and Sabrina asks Jimmy to hang out with her gay best friend and his partner. But first, Jimmy asks Burt to do some recon by spending time at the local gay bar. When Burt keeps going back to the bar, Virginia wonders if he’s enjoying his time there a little too much and tracks him down in costume on Halloween night.

  

Episode 50 - Season 3, Episode 6: What Up, Bro?

When Jimmy finds a childhood photo of himself with an older boy and a family he doesn’t know, Burt reveals that he and Virginia gave him up for adoption for a short time when they were teen parents. Jimmy recruits Sabrina to forge a scheme to meet and bond with his would-have-been big brother Brad (Guest Star Chris Klein). Meanwhile, Virginia and Burt question their decision to take Jimmy back when the would-be adoptive parents turn out to be affluent and nurturing.

  

Episode 51 - Season 3, Episode 7: Candy Wars

When Natesville holds its annual Thanksgiving Radish Harvest Festival, Jimmy is determined to sell the most candy bars around town, so that Hope can ride atop the town’s Thanksgiving Day float. But when Jimmy doesn’t sell enough to win the contest, Virginia and Maw Maw unveil a dark, mafia-inspired family secret that could lead the Chances to victory.

  

Episode 52 - Season 3, Episode 8: The Walk For The Runs

When the annual Angry Bowel Syndrome (ABS) 1K walk comes to Natesville, the Chance family decides to band together and support the cause that Jimmy suffered from as a child. Meanwhile, Burt and Virginia start to feel the effects of aging, and Jimmy struggles to support Sabrina in a fight with her ex-boyfriend when she is clearly in the wrong.

  

Episode 53 - Season 3, Episode 9: Squeak Means Squeak

Jimmy confronts Sabrina about only doing the “fun stuff” with Hope, and none of the heavy lifting of parenthood. Sabrina gets the chance to prove him wrong when Jimmy joins Barney as a Natesville Auxiliary cop for the day, and leaves her with Hope. Meanwhile, Virginia and Burt are determined to capture a squirrel that has been harassing all of the other squirrels in the neighborhood.

  

Episode 54 - Season 3, Episode 10: The Last Christmas

Like the Mayans, Virginia is convinced that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012, so she uses her extreme couponing skills to stock up on supplies and forces the family to train for the apocalypse. Meanwhile, Jimmy is determined to give Hope the best Christmas he can, since it will likely be the first one she remembers and Maw Maw tries to knock a few more items off her bucket list before the end of the world.

  

Episode 55 - Season 3, Episode 11: Credit Where Credit Is Due

When Jimmy and Sabrina decide to buy a new car that will be safer for Hope, they discover that Jimmy has a rock-bottom credit score that dates back to when he was a child. Burt and Virginia confess that they had maxed out a credit card in Jimmy’s name, and plead with their bank representative Dennis (guest star Lloyd) to clear his debt, even if it means giving up their new DeLorean.

  

Episode 56 - Season 3, Episode 12: Lord of The Ring

Burt tells Jimmy that he needs to buy Sabrina a nice engagement ring, even if she claims she doesn’t need one, so Jimmy starts volunteering for a series of exotic medical experiments to come up with the cash. Meanwhile Virginia has been pawning her engagement ring for years behind Burt’s back to pay for odds and ends. But when Jimmy visits the pawnshop and falls in love with his own mom’s ring, her secret may be out.

Virginia offers to give Sabrina some much-needed cooking lessons. Virginia thinks that Burt is getting her an expensive gift for their 25th anniversary. So she decides to take him to a dude ranch that is run by a crazy cowboy. But Burt isn’t able to enjoy himself, because of a secret he is keeping from Virginia.

Maw Maw has found a new love, Hubert, who encourages her to engage in some reckless activity. When Virginia and Burt realize they are suffering from “empty nest syndrome,” Sabrina suggests they adopt a dog. But when they are turned down by the pound, they are given a trial period as dog owners with Michael, who ends up overstaying his welcome at the Chance’s home. Meanwhile, Jimmy tries to prove to Sabrina that he’s still a ladies man, even when he doesn’t have Hope with him to attract women.

  

Episode 87 - Season 4, Episode 21: How I Met Your Mullet

Jimmy and Sabrina get a surprise when they learn that Sabrina’s late grandmother has left them the family maid, who has a lifetime contract with the family. Meanwhile, Virginia gets a promotion at work that allows Burt to retire and pursue his passion – even if he doesn’t know what his passion is.

  

Episode 88 - Season 4, Episode 22: Father Daughter Dance

Virginia’s father, Arnold, returns to Natesville seeking help in planning his upcoming wedding. But Arnold surprises everyone when he reveals that the wedding Virginia has planned is really for her and Burt – the dream wedding they never got to have as teen parents.
