Season 1 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Mrs Biggs, Episode 1

Five-part drama series about the woman who married Ronnie Biggs, who would later become one of Britain's most wanted criminals. The series begins with Charmian as a teenager on a train, where she first meets and falls in love with the flirtatious and worldly Ronnie Biggs. Her father's disapproval means that the couple have to elope to the Dorset coast with money that Ronnie forced Charmian to steal from her employers. After being caught by police following a dramatic chase, Ronnie is imprisoned and Charmian receives a suspended sentence. After his release, Charmian pleads with Ronnie to turn his back on a life of crime. But money worries force Ronnie to ask an old friend for a loan for a deposit on a house. That friend is Bruce Reynolds, who is planning one of the most famous crimes in British history - the Great Train Robbery of August 1963. When Bruce offers Ronnie 40,000 pounds to provide a train driver for the robbery, he reluctantly accepts.

  

Episode 2 - Mrs Biggs, Episode 2

Second of a five-part drama series about the woman who married Ronnie Biggs. Ronnie takes part in the Great Train Robbery and returns home to a horrified Charmian. She is aware of the magnitude of the crime and knows the stability of their family has been jeopardised forever. Charmian's worst fears are realised when Ronnie is arrested and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. Disowned by her family and left without a husband, Charmian must navigate her way through an extortion attempt before facing up to the prospect of raising her young family alone.

  

Episode 3 - Mrs Biggs, Episode 3

Five-part drama series about the woman who married Ronnie Biggs. With Ronnie incarcerated and unable to provide for his family, Charmian is pursued by a young sailor and his manipulative mother. A brief relationship leads to an unwanted pregnancy and an illegal termination. Just when Charmian is coming to terms with this, she discovers that Ronnie is planning to escape from prison. They reunite in Paris and decide to move to Australia as fugitives in a bid to keep their family together. But the capture of Reynolds in the UK forces them to move cities once again.

  

Episode 4 - Mrs Biggs, Episode 4

Five-part drama series about the woman who married Ronnie Biggs. Charmian and Ronnie settle into their new life in Melbourne. They now have a third son and are both making honest livings. But when Ronnie meets up with some old friends from his criminal past he jeopardises his freedom and has to go back on the run. Then Charmian is arrested and her sons are taken into care. She eventually gets them back, but is forced to say goodbye to Ronnie as he flees to Rio de Janeiro - both realising that they may never see each other again.

  

Episode 5 - Mrs Biggs, Episode 5

As Ron begins a new life in Rio, Charmian makes the best of things as a single mother in Melbourne. But then tragedy strikes when their eldest son Nicky is killed in a car accident. Charmian is distraught but determined to remain strong and starts to pursue a life-long dream, while Ron descends into a life of drink and philandering. When one of his conquests announces she is pregnant with his child, he realises this could be the ticket to a right to remain in Brazil. Ron asks Charmian for a divorce and she agrees on the understanding that it is only temporary. But as Ron grows increasingly distant and slips further into a life of debauchery, Charmian is forced to make a decision that will affect the rest of her life.

  

Episode 6 - The Widower, Episode 1

When Claire Morris (Sheridan Smith) confronts her new husband, Malcolm Webster (Reece Shearsmith) over his wild spending, he starts to drug her to keep her quiet. When a medical check-up threatens to expose him he decides to silence her once and for all. Three years on, he has a new bride... and history appears to be repeating itself.

  

Episode 7 - The Widower, Episode 2

After failed attempts on Felicity’s (Kate Fleetwood) life, Malcolm (Reece Shearsmith) returns to Scotland and reinvents himself - this time as a perfect boyfriend to Simone (Archie Panjabi). However, DS Henry (John Hannah) is hot on his heels and will stop at nothing to prevent the next murder.

  

Episode 8 - The Widower, Episode 3

As Malcolm (Reece Shearsmith) continues to evade capture and plots to bigamously marry Simone (Archie Panjabi), DS Henry (John Hannah) is being thwarted at every step of his investigation. Time is running out when he discovers a legal ruling that could ultimately lead to Malcolm’s downfall.

First of a three-part thriller. When her detective husband Ryan is murdered, PC Jo Gillespie is expected to leave it to her colleagues in the force to find his killer. But as Jo starts to lose trust in her police family, she feels compelled to carry out her own investigation, a search for the truth that will put herself and her children in danger.

  

Episode 13 - Black Work, Episode 2

Second of a three-part thriller. When her detective husband Ryan is murdered, PC Jo Gillespie is expected to leave it to her colleagues in the force to find his killer. With the chief suspect in custody, the investigation into Ryan's murder appears to have been wrapped up. Jo still has doubts and as she digs further into her husband's undercover life, she encounters dark secrets on both sides of the law - leading to a disturbing revelation about the man she married.

  

Episode 14 - Black Work, Episode 3

Conclusion of a three-part thriller. When her detective husband Ryan is murdered, PC Jo Gillespie is shocked to discover he was working undercover. Reeling from a secret that strikes at the heart of her family, Jo decides to put the needs of her children first. Then another body is discovered and she realises that her husband's killer is still out there - and closer to home than she ever imagined.
