Episode 1 - Stockholm Syndrome

(Series Premiere) Numbed after his girlfriend moves out because of his repeated failure to stop drinking and smoking pot, between-books novelist Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) peruses his favorite Raymond Chandler novel, 'Farewell, My Lovely,' and is inspired to place an ad on the Internet offering his (unlicensed) services as a private investigator. Within hours he gets his first case, involving a 19-year-old girl's desperate search for her missing sister. Despite the fact that he should be working on his second novel, and despite the fact that he is on deadline for a piece he's writing for the magazine he works for, Jonathan heads out into the urban night to track down the girl, embracing his newfound noir-detective status. At the end of a (very long) day, Jonathan earns his fee...and finds he's got another case. (Series Premiere)

Episode 2 - Season 1, Episode 2: The Alanon Case

During an unsuccessful attempt to win back Suzanne, Jonathan gets a phone call and a new case: a woman named Jennifer (Kristen Wiig) wants him to tail her boyfriend Gary (Peter Hermann) to see if he's been unfaithful. After learning that he and Jennifer share a common pastime (drinking), Jonathan heads out in search of her boyfriend--with uncomfortable results. Meanwhile, Ray brings Jonathan along to his colonic for moral support, and George hatches a knockout plan in which Jonathan will help him cover up an unsightly sore before a big speech.

At a New York film-society party, George introduces Jonathan to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, a fan of Jonathan's first book who is interested in having him rewrite a screenplay. Later, after leaving his personalized script in a therapist's office during an ill-advised late-night tryst with a (very) young party girl, Jonathan turns to Ray to pose as a patient in order to retrieve it. Meanwhile, George is flummoxed when he runs into his sexy ex-wife Priscilla and her arrogant new husband, fellow publishing magnate Richard Antrem.

Meanwhile, George decides to get in touch with his feminine side as a way to drive sales of his sagging magazines.

  

Episode 5 - The Case of the Lonely White Dove

A smitten Russian parolee contracts Jonathan to track down a chanteuse known as 'the Lonely White Dove.' After a vodka-fueled reconnaissance mission at the Brighton Beach restaurant where she works, Jonathan persuades Suzanne--and Ray and Leah--to join him there for dinner the next night, failing to reveal his true purpose. Meanwhile, George decides to get in touch with his feminine side as a way to drive sales of his sagging magazines.

  

Episode 6 - The Case of the Beautiful Blackmailer

Jonathan is enlisted to retrieve a sex tape that a female escort is using to extort money from a married man. With Ray and George in tow, Jonathan ends up in a motel room with the escort, who attempts to blackmail him as well. Can the very stoned Ray and George save Jonathan's neck before the woman's enraged brother breaks it?

  

Episode 6 - Season 1, Episode 6: The Case of the Beautiful Blackmailer

Jonathan is enlisted to retrieve a sex tape that a female escort is using to extort money from a married man. With Ray and George in tow, Jonathan ends up in a motel room with the escort, who attempts to blackmail him as well. Episode 9 - Season 2, Episode 1: Escape from the Dungeon!

Season Two Premiere. Taking time out from his new gig as a night-school creative-writing teacher, Jonathan is hired by a mounted policeman to infiltrate an S&M dungeon after learning the business is about to be busted--and that his name is on their computerized client list. Meanwhile, George is flummoxed to learn that his new publisher plans to cut costs on every front, and Ray fails a yoga test with Leah, putting their relationship in final jeopardy.

  

Episode 10 - Season 2, Episode 2: Make It Quick, Fitzgerald!

Jonathan is hired by Richard Antrem, George's nemesis and boxing foe, to investigate Richard's suspicions that his wife Priscilla (George's ex) is having an affair. Jonathan's insecurities resurface when Stella announces she's not over her first love. George learns he has a new female urologist; Ray plots to win back Leah by penning a comic book.

  

Episode 11 - Season 2, Episode 3: The Gowanus Canal Has Gonorrhea!

George worries about remaining 'intact' after getting some sobering news from his new urologist, Dr. Kenwood. A bad day for Jonathan gets worse when a pair of SM henchmen kidnap him, demanding a ransom that calls 'GI' George & Ray to action.

  

Episode 12 - Season 2, Episode 4: I've Been Living Like a Demented God!

A professor hires Jonathan to track down a valuable item. George finds an alibi to explain the results of his drug test. Flushed with cash from his 'Super Ray' comic book, Ray heads to the bar--and meets a familiar barfly.

Jonathan attempts to repair the relationship between a poet/limousine driver and his wife. Ray has a meeting with Kevin Bacon.

  

Episode 14 - Season 2, Episode 6: The Case of the Grievous Clerical Error!

Leah hires Jonathan to help find her new dog, 'Little Ray.' Ray joins Jonathan in the search for the dog, getting some inside help from a local woman. A reflective George heads to the hospital for surgery.

  

Episode 15 - Season 2, Episode 7: Escape From the Castle!

A dermatologist enlists Jonathan to deliver a letter to his intended at an Asian health spa. Jonathan takes Ray to the spa for his birthday, with George and his new chauffeur Vikram in tow.

  

Episode 16 - Season 2, Episode 8: Super Ray is Mortal!

In the Season Two finale, a mad stalker imperils Ray on the eve of the Brooklyn Comic Con. With the help of Officer Drake, he and Jonathan piece together leads to track down the perp. George decides to make a stand at work. Jonathan has another battle with his nemesis, Louis Greene.

  

Episode 17 - Season 3, Episode 1: The Blonde in the Woods

(Season Three Premiere) After celebrating the release of his new book The Blonde in the Woods, Jonathan learns some distressing familial news. George reunites with his daughter Emily and meets her new boyfriend. Ray spends time with his biological son Spencer. Meanwhile, Jonathan's latest case leaves him in a precarious position.

  

Episode 18 - Season 3, Episode 2: Gumball!

On the lam, Jonathan and Ray try to hunt down the person who framed Jonathan. Meanwhile, George covers for them despite his growing cannabis-induced paranoia.

  

Episode 19 - Season 3, Episode 3: The Black Clock of Time

As a guest on 'The New Dick Cavett Show,' Jonathan runs into his nemesis. George is surprised to hear Bernard and Emily's news, and Ray sets off an AMBER Alert.

  

Episode 20 - Season 3, Episode 4: We Could Sing a Duet

While showing Emily a youthful time, Jonathan discovers a classified ad for a detective impersonating himself. On a night out with Bernard, George learns that Richard Antrem has opened a restaurant aimed at hurting George's restaurant. Ray, in hot water with Leah, finds himself drawn to a lonely woman named Belinda (Olympia Dukakis).

  

Episode 21 - Season 3, Episode 5: I Keep Taking Baths Like Lady MacBeth

Jonathan and George see a 'friendship' counselor (Sarah Silverman). George begins taking singing lessons from a delightful pothead named Josephine (Mary Steenburgen). Jonathan attempts to win back George's affection. Ray becomes irresistible to women.

  

Episode 22 - Season 3, Episode 6: Two Large Pearls and a Bar of Gold

Jonathan's college sweetheart enlists him to guard her wedding jewels and reminds him of their prenuptial pact. Ray moves in with George. George warns Josephine about growing too attached.

  

Episode 23 - Season 3, Episode 7: Forget the Herring

Rose Hiney (Isla Fisher) connects with Jonathan on some new leads. George and Ray attempt to right their unrightable wrongs.

  

Episode 24 - Season 3, Episode 8: Nothing I Can't Handle by Running Away

In the Season Three finale, George throws a wedding for Emily and Bernard. Jonathan is hesitant to break it off with his new lady. Ray retreats into Spencer's arms. Jonathan gets taken hostage and Ray gathers an army of his newfound Super Ray fans.
