Episode 1 - Breaking Hockey's Glass Ceiling

Hockey is the last of the major professional sports to see the inclusion of women in all roles. But in the last few years progress has been made…Women have started to break hockey's glass ceiling, emerging as NHL executives and rising through the coaching, officiating and management ranks.

  

Episode 2 - Indigenous Sports Academy- The Story of Courage Bear

Courage Bear is the founding director of the first and only Indigenous hockey academy in North America. Based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the program is designed to create a safe space for indigenous players to learn and grow both on and off the ice.

  

Episode 3 - Girls Hockey in the North

In this episode, viewers travel to Canada's far North to meet the Kuugaruk Dynamite Girls Hockey Team. Thanks to the combined efforts of local teacher Emma Keagan and Project North, girls hockey has been reestablished in this small Nunavut community for the first time in over 30 years.

Luke Prokop is fighting back stereotypes as the NHL’s first openly gay player.

  

Episode 5 - Canadian Blind Hockey

In this episode viewers meet the founder of the Canadian Blind Hockey Association, Mark Demontis. Mark is a three-time Gold Medalist with the Canadian Blind Hockey team and is determined to make hockey more accessible to children who are blind or partially sighted across the country.

  

Episode 6 - Seaside Hockey-The Story of Kirk Brooks

Kirk Brooks has been mentoring young black hockey players for over three decades. This year Kirk was awarded the Herbert Carnegie Trailblazer award for his work with the GTHL's Seaside Hockey Club.

  

Episode 7 - A New Era of Women’s Hockey

It is an extraordinary time for women’s hockey. A new women’s professional hockey league-the PWHL- will begin competing in North America in January 2024.

  

Episode 8 - Behind the Bench

Last season Jessica Campbell became the first female assistant coach in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. The NHL has yet to see a female assistant coach behind the bench, a barrier Campbell hopes to help break down for future generation

  

Episode 9 - Trailblazer

In 2020 Kim St-Pierre became the first female goalie inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Today Kim works with Canadian Tire Jump Start Charities and is committed to enriching the lives of children across the country by providing access to sport and physical activity.

  

Episode 10 - Camp of Dreams

Every summer, Vancouver Canucks Defenceman Ethan Bear returns to Ochapowace Nation, Saskatchewan to run his annual summer hockey camp for local young indigenous players. Ethan has faced challenges and experienced racism throughout his career and is now devoted to trying to pave the way for future indigenous hockey players.

  

Episode 11 - Straz Strong

Just months after the devastating Humboldt bus accident, Ryan Straschnitzki was back on the ice-with his sights set on making Canada's National Para Hockey Team. Ryan remains committed to helping make hockey more accessible through his foundation, Straz Strong.

  

Episode 12 - A Season in Review

During season 1 of Breaking Down Barriers we had the opportunity to meet and tell the stories of individuals and organizations devoted to changing hockey culture...people determined to make Canada's Game truly a game for everyone. In this episode we will look back at season 1 and highlight moments that celebrate the progress that is being made by the brave trailbrazers we had the privilege of working with.
