Season 1 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - The LSD Story

Sgt. Joe Friday (series star Jack Webb) and his partner, Officer Bill Gannon (co-star Harry Morgan), break up an LSD party and track down a suspect who has been selling the drug to teen-agers. Michael Burns guest-stars as Benjie "Blue Boy" Carver, an 18-year old "pusher" who not only provides the drug which produces weird hallucinations, but also uses the "acid". Carver first encounters the law when, painted up garishly, he is arrested at a vacant lot with his head buried in the ground. Earlier he had been reported chewing bark form a tree. His well-to-do parents (Robert Knapp and Eve Brent) are indignant with the police but later learn the hard way of LSD’s destructive effects.

  

Episode 2 - The Big Explosion

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (co-star Harry Morgan) must find 400 pounds of stolen high-velocity dynamite set to go off somewhere in Los Angeles. Their investigation leads to suspect Donald L. Chapman (Don Dubbins), a neo-Nazi and hate-monger, who readily admits the theft. Chapman, however, refuses to divulge where he has the explosives rigged but hints his aim is to bring integration plans to a halt.

  

Episode 3 - The Kidnapping

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (co-star Harry Morgan) track a young gunman who has two hostages in a car. Suspect Donald Albers (Ronnie Rondell) takes a cosmetics manufacturer and her secretary Janet (Peggy Webber) for a "ride" after successfully getting Janet to withdraw $75,000 from a bank while he held her boss at gunpoint. But Albers forgot to consider Los Angeles' freeway traffic in his plans.

  

Episode 4 - The Interrogation

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) are assigned to investigate an armed robbery in which a fellow policeman is a prime suspect. Officer Paul Culver (Kent McWhirter) had been a member of the Los Angeles Police Department for only 114 days. He was working undercover out of the Narcotics Division when a liquor store near where he was operating was held up. He fit the description of the holdup man as given by an eyewitness.

     

Episode 5 - The Masked Bandits

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) working out of Robbery Division, search for armed thieves specializing in holding up cocktail lounges. The gang of four, always disguised in bright red masks, had successfully knocked over six bars in as many weeks. The only clues on which to work were the masks and a report that in each case the get away car was an old black Cadillac.

  

Episode 6 - Bank Examiner Swindle

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) are out to halt a pair of con artists who are bilking elderly citizens out of their life savings in "The Bank Examiner Swindle". Two confident men have a widespread operation in which they pose as state bank examiners. They ask their intended victims to help them catch a crooked bank teller in a unique scheme, which included drawing money out of savings.

  

Episode 7 - The Hammer

An apartment house manger is bludgeoned to death and Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and his partner, Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) seek the murderer in "The Hammer". Several clues lead to various suspects, and eventually to a small Arizona town where Friday and Gannon are accompanied by Policewoman Dorothy Miller (Merry Anders). Featured guest include James Oliver as Fred Tosca, Jill Banner as his wife, Camille, Brain Avery as Terry Ridges and Chet Stratton as Guthrie, all residents of the apartment house.

  

Episode 8 - The Candy Store Robberies

Several stores in a confectionery chain have been hit by a gunman and Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) are assigned to catch him in "The Candy Store Robberies". Pressure from the detectives’ supervisor is on the pair since the suspect has successfully knocked over 10 stores, using the same method of operation in each hold-up. The cast included Merry Anders as Policewoman Dorothy Miller And Virginia Gregg as Mrs. Hardy, on the candy store clerks.

  

Episode 9 - The Fur Job

A twofold assignment is handed Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) to catch the thieves and recover $100,000 worth of furs stolen from an exclusive department store in "The Fur Job". With coaching from Emile Hartman (Henry Cordon), store representative, Gannon becomes an "expert" in chinchilla and mink, a factor, which aids the detectives in cracking the case. The cast includes Joanne Medley as a young debutante fur shopper and Jody Gilbert as her mother. Merry Anders portrays Policewoman Dorothy Miller.

  

Episode 10 - The Jade Story

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) investigate a burglary in a luxurious Los Angeles home where $200,000 worth of jewelry is reported missing in, "The Jade Story". Socialite Francine Graham (Virginia Gregg), widow of an importer killed in the Orient, tells the officers that her imperial Jade was among pieces taken from the wall safe, which the thief managed to open. The cast includes Eddie Firestone as Ben Martin, small time burglar, Annazette as the maid, and Yoneo Iguchi as the gardener.

  

Episode 11 - The Shooting

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) trail a pair of paroled convicts who have shot a fellow officer in "The Shooting". While Officer Dave Roberts (Don Marshall) recovers physically from the shotgun blast, which felled him during a routine check on the suspects parked near a liquor store, he suffers complete blackout as a result of the incident and is unable to make identification. Others in the cast include Alfred Shelly as Sgt. Al Vietti, Art Ballinger as Captain Brown and Hal Baylor and Dick Miller as the shooting suspects. Webb produces and directs as well as stars in the series.

  

Episode 12 - The Big Kids

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) crack down on a gang of juvenile shoplifters, in "The Big Kids". When teen-ager Bobby Lassin (Mickey Sholdar) is caught stealing a strange assortment of goods, including diapers, paper clips and hair dryer, Sgt. Friday delves into the reasons why a boy would take such items. The investigation leads to a mod-clad club, which has a unique set of entrance requirements. The cast includes Roger Mobley as Audie, club leader, Peggy Webber, as Mrs. Lassin, Bobby's mother, Art Balinger as Police Capt. Richey and Richard Crane as Police Sgt. Pearson.

  

Episode 13 - The Hit and Run Driver

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) work out of the accident investigation division in search of a motorist who killed two pedestrians, in "The Hit and Run Driver". Despite conflicting statements by several eyewitnesses, Friday and Gannon find their man and, with the help of forensic chemist Ray Murray (Olan Soule), get evidence needed to convict him. The cast included Robert Clarke as the suspect, Clayton Filmore, and Audrey Dalton as Mrs. Filmore.

  

Episode 14 - The Bookie

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) works undercover out of Administrative Vice in a drive to break up a gambling ring, in "The Bookie". Dressed as a surveyor’s helper, Sgt. Friday and Sgt. Bill Riddle (William Reynolds) hang out at a bar because they suspect bartender Richard Clinger (Bobby Troup) of taking bets on horse races. Luana Patten portrays Angie, the waitress, and director Sidney Miller, portrays the same character he did on a "Dragnet" show 10 years ago, that of Jay Simmons, an intoxicated visitor from Pismo Beach.

  

Episode 15 - The Subscription Racket

A phony magazine salesman using an authentic Congressional Medal of Honor for credentials is the target of Sgt. Friday (Jacks Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan), in "The Subscription Racket". When Sgt. Friday makes a public service appearance on a local television station, the firm's film librarian, Tate (Doodles Weaver), reports that his wife, Marilyn (Sarah Selby), has been swindled our of a large sum of money by a magazine canvasser. The investigation shows how police deal with this type of confidence game. Brian Avery is featured as suspect, Glenn Procustan, and Marianne Gordon portrays his girl friend.

  

Episode 16 - The Gun

Reiko, a beautiful Japanese-born widow whose Nisei husband was killed in Vietnam is murdered and Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) are assigned to find her slayer, in "The Gun", this week’s episode of "Dragnet". The only clue left by the murderer is a slug, which lodged in the floor of Reiko's home after it passed through her head. But a detailed search of the neighborhood uncovers further leads with considerable help from Lurlene (Annazette), a victim of an assault a week earlier. Sharann Hisamoto portrays Miko, Reiko's 5-year-old daughter, Kathleen Freeman is Mrs. Pound and Anne Loos portrays Mrs. Edney. Raymond Mayo is featured as Ben Yoder, the painter.

  

Episode 17 - The Bullet

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) are about to wrap up a routine suicide investigation when the police laboratory chemist develops a bizarre twist to the case, in "The Bullet". All physical evidence at the home of Nora Hamlin (Carol Byron) indicates her estranged husband shot himself over their separation. But closer study by Forensic chemist Ray Murray (Olan Soule) sends the detectives back for further investigation. Mabel Albertson portrays Jessie Gaynor, Nora's mother.
