Episode 1 - Part 1

In the dying days of the Edwardian Empire, principled aristocrat Christopher Tietjens enters into a destructive marriage with Sylvia (Rebecca Hall), a cruel socialite, despite learning that the baby she carries may have been fathered by someone else. Ignoring her overt flirtation with other men, Christopher resolves to remain faithful, even after encountering Valentine Wannop, a fearless young suffragette with whom he shares an instant connection. Meanwhile, Christopher's colleague and confidant, amateur critic Vincent Macmaster, is unable to similarly resist the charms of Edith Duchemin, the frustrated wife of a deranged minister.

Episode 2 - Part 2

After a stint in France with her fawning admirer, Perowne, Sylvia reunites with Christopher, though their relationship remains turbulent. Under his terms of reconciliation, Christopher insists they move out of their large townhome, and into a flat opposite Macmaster. After war is declared, Christopher is ordered to massage military numbers at the Dept. of Statistics; outraged at being asked to lie, he quits his job and enlists in the army, infuriating his wife.

Episode 3 - Part 3

As Christopher recovers from shell shock in France, a round of vicious rumors, inadvertently fueled by his brother, Mark, leads to a shocking tragedy at Groby, his family home. Sylvia finds a new admirer, Brownlie, who proves a convenient distraction as the war continues. Edith and Macmaster plan a new life together, even after her husband is released from an asylum. Valentine, whose family has been stigmatized by their pacifist stance and the arrest of her brother, Edward, secures a London teaching job, but falls out of favor with the social-climbing Edith.

Episode 4 - Part 4

In Rouen, Christopher prepares recruits for battle, and comes to regret refusing a leave. Bored in London, Sylvia decides to visit her husband in France, oblivious to the consequences for him and General Campion, who is Christopher's godfather and his commanding officer. Christopher's leniency towards a soldier accused of desertion angers the chief of military police; he also offends another officer by contradicting his advice on equine care. Following a confrontation outside Sylvia's hotel room, Christopher is ordered to leave Campion's training unit--for the front.

Episode 5 - Part 5

At the front, Christopher takes over from a commanding officer who suffers from shell shock and a drinking problem. Amidst the shelling, he is dismayed to learn from a corporal who lives close to his home that Sylvia is contemplating chopping down the great Groby tree. After General Campion arrives to take over his command, Christopher convalesces and is sent home, where Sylvia--now ensconced at Groby--makes a last-ditch attempt to keep her husband from building a future with Valentine.
