Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the effective end to slavery in the United States. It marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when in the wake of the American Civil War, Major General Gordon Granger led federal troops into Galveston to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. He ordered the final enforcement in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation signed in 1863 by President Lincoln.
