Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings
It would be difficult to choose the best songs written by the much-loved Dolly Parton, but in this anthology series each story is inspired by the emotional themes of eight tracks. Dolly introduces and stars in certain episodes. There is comedy, romance and family drama reflecting the heart-warming soul of this inspiring, generous woman through her music. Fans of Dolly Parton will find this enjoyable viewing.
Lovesick
The title of this Mexican historical drama does not fully reflect the serious content within. It is the story of Emilia Sauri, a determined young woman who dreams of studying medicine at a time when women were not encouraged to work. Set at the start of the Mexican Revolution in 1910 Emilie pursues her ambition while being torn between a revolutionary and a young doctor who both declare their affections.
Blood Sacrifice
An excellent, riveting crime thriller from Sweden created by Lupin’s George Kay which follows Detective Thomas Berg as he endeavors to apprehend a brutal killer targeting police. Without the permission of his superiors, he resorts to consulting his estranged ex-cop father, which brings past family resentments to the surface. On studying past scenarios, they both realize this is a complicated crime of revenge, which could make them the next target.
The Whisper Man
Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan and Adam Scott star in this crime thriller film based on Alex North's novel where widowed novelist Tom Kennedy and his son return to Tom’s hometown, once terrorised by a serial killer. When an abduction mimics the past, Tom turns to his retired detective father who caught the original killer decades ago. Michael Keaton is superb as the imprisoned Frank Carter.
Father Mother Sister Brother
Family relationships are complicated. Jim Jarmusch directs this film featuring three stories of the dynamics between parents and their adult children. It is an observation of the clumsy, awkward connection that exists and the selective information imparted on the rare occasion that they are together. Tom Waits and Adam Driver as father and son are a high point of the film.
The Secret Lives of Dentists
In this oft confusing comedy-drama Campbell Scott and Hope Davis star as David and Dana who are married with three children, and partners in a dental practice. Suspecting Dana of having an affair, David becomes stressed, which causes hallucinations that a hostile patient is his inner voice instructing him on how to handle the situation. Denis Leary is at his maniacal best as the cynical Slater infiltrating David’s mind.
Secret Woman
This compelling Nordic psychological thriller has all the components, deception, love, murder and obsession. Louise is a newly betrothed amnesiac café owner on an idyllic Norwegian island who discovers through a DNA test that she is Helene, a missing Danish shipping heiress with a husband and son. As she investigates her own disappearance, menacing family secrets begin to emerge causing fear and suspicion to surface.
The Decoy Plane
Intrigue and deception are elements of this documentary exploring the covert operation that occurred when US President Donald Trump furtively changed planes after a summit in Turkey. Orchestrated by his security detail, Trump boarded Air Force One, exiting through another door to a smaller aircraft with a select group, leaving journalists on board unaware that he was not. There are interesting accounts from reporters and photographers on the decoy flight.
Teenage Wasteland
An inspiring investigative documentary where unconventional teacher Fred Isseks encourages students to produce their own video projects in an electronics class. When they hear of a local Mafia run landfill leaking toxic matter, they interview workers and officials, chronicling environmental coverups. Isseks was reprimanded by the school and the class discontinued. Three decades on, those students have returned to reflect on how the experience affected their choices as adults.
Final Last Words – Gloria Steinem
In this series created by Brad Falchuk, the feminist luminary Gloria Steinem deliberates on life at the forefront of the feminist movement, the creation of Ms. Magazine, politics and regrets. Co-founding the National Women’s Political Caucus, she was an inspiration to women for decades. Her last words at the end of the documentary are a profound and meaningful mantra for life’s choices. Steinem died on September 2, 2026, aged 92.
