Alley Cats – Adult Animation
This is Ricky Gervais. This is an animation series like no other. The story follows a group of foul-mouthed feral British cats, led by a cynical, lazy orange tabby named Gus. As they roam the streets of London, taking in a lost kitten along the way, they give their views on companionship, life, and mortality. This is a raw, crude look at life from a down-and-out cat’s perspective that will offend those who wish to be offended. It will be highly entertaining for alley cats.
The Hawk
Will Ferrell is a comedian whose humor divides critics. Co-created by and starring Ferrell this is the hilarious journey of former top golfer Lonnie Hawkins who chokes but refuses to give up his quest for a return to glory. Plagued by his materialistic ex-wife Stacy, and in competition with his pro-golfer son Lance, Lonnie’s assistant in his madness is Sam, a golf caddy he found in a Walmart parking lot.
100 Years of Solitude – Columbia
This remarkable series is a historical study of one man and his family’s endeavors to build a community from nothing. Jose Buendia is a visionary and inventor who establishes the village of Macondo from swampland. Through seven generations the town prospers. Eventually, the authorities endeavor to put a stop to Buendia’s idyll. It is rare for an adaptation to surpass the printed version. This series has achieved that goal.
The Hunting Wives
Brittany Snow stars in this erotic thriller series based on May Cobb’s novel. This is compulsive viewing where one just can’t look away. One is drawn into the life of East Texas newcomer Sophie as she becomes mesmerized by dangerous socialite Margo and her elite inner circle of high-society friends. Wild parties, topless pool gatherings, late-night target practice, and hunting in the pinewoods are all part of the game.
Song Sung Blue
Based on a true story, this is a beautiful film of love, perseverance and music which overcomes all the obstacles that life presents. With exceptional vocal performances, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are superb as working-class Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire who find a romantic and creative bond when they form a Neil Diamond tribute act, bringing their families and friends together as they endure hardships that test their endurance.
Ordinary Angels
Hilary Swank gives a powerful performance in this true story as fierce, committed Kentucky hairdresser Sharon Stevens who rallies her whole town to help widowed father Ed Schmitt. As Ed is faced with medical debt, Sharon battles hospital bureaucracy, and raises funds while fighting personal battles. When Ed is trying to get his critically ill daughter to hospital for a transplant during a blizzard, the community excel all expectations.
Four Seasons (1981)
The TV series of the same title, which is also on Netflix, was an adaptation of this wonderful film created, directed and starring Alan Alda. It is a comedy drama where three middle-aged couples face the changing dynamics of their friendship while vacationing together across the different seasons, confronting loyalties and their own marriages. The chemistry of the ensemble cast adds emotional depth to their crises.
The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare
This true-crime documentary series leaves many questions unanswered for the families of the victims, which adds to their heartbreak. It chronicles the November 2022 killings of four University of Idaho students, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, and the subsequent investigation and arrest of the perpetrator. The production focuses on the victims as their story is told through family interviews and archives.
A Secret Love
This heartfelt documentary follows the remarkable 65-year romance between former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player, Canadian Terry Donahue, and her partner Pat Henschel as they face the hardships of aging, illness, getting married and where to live out their final years. There are revealing insights into women’s professional baseball, Chicago’s underground queer community and the reaction of family who always assumed Terry and Pat were just good friends.
Mourinho
Often dubbed the most handsome soccer manager in the world, this is a revealing documentary on Jose Mourinho’s meteoric rise, rivalries and immense ego that infused his career. His time at Chelsea, Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid are all revisited with anecdotes from players and club officials who worked with Mourinho. This is a man totally dedicated to football, perhaps to the detriment of those close to him.
