Our editors have picked the top new arrivals on Netflix this week, including series, movies and documentaries.
East of Eden
James Dean garnered an Oscar nomination as Cal Trask for the 1955 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel. Original director Elia Kazan’s granddaughter Zoe created this TV series version. Starring Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbott, this emotional drama spans several years in the lives of the traumatized Trask brothers, concentrating on the charismatic Cathy Ames who exploits them for her own gain.
The Final Problem
This acceptable Spanish mystery series set in 1959 on an island near Majorca, stars Jose Coronado as Benjamin Basil, an actor famed for portraying Sherlock Holmes. As a storm rages, thirteen guests are stranded in a luxury hotel. When a tourist is found dead, Basil is coerced into using his acting Holmes skills to flush out the murderer, assisted by crime novelist Francisco Foxa, who also happens to be a guest.
Matlock
The incomparable Kathy Bates stars as retired lawyer Matty Matlock in this adaptation of the 1986 series. Matty joins prestigious law firm Jacobson Moore, for a distinct purpose. As she oversees her weekly cases, she is also out for revenge, seeking proof of corruption in the death of her daughter, which was concealed by one of her associates. Bates’ performance is at the heart of this entertaining legal drama series.
Sinatra – All or Nothing at All
Using the setlist and archival footage from Frank Sinatra’s famous 1971 "Retirement Concert" in Los Angeles, this documentary explores the first 60 years of Sinatra’s life. There is narration from Nancy Sinatra, Mia Farrow and Lauren Bacall and extracts from his diaries. Beginning in Hoboken, New Jersey, to his Tommy Dorsey days, the slumps in his career and his Oscar-winning role in From Here to Eternity this is an entertaining journey.
Less of a Stranger
An entertaining biographical drama based on the life of Jan Borysewicz, the guitarist and founder of the Polish rock band Lady Pank, from his rebellious youth to his rock music obsession and the difficulty involved in performing under communist rule. It gives interesting insights into 1980s Poland and the censorship artists experienced. Mikołaj Bukrewicz embraces the rock star persona as Borysewicz.
The Widower – Til Death Do US Part
A true-crime documentary investigating “Black Widower” Thomas Randolph who inexplicably charmed women, took out life insurance policies and then staged fatal accidents, claiming self-defense. Dateline’s Dan Slepian and LA detective Dean O'Kelley spent years tracking Randolph who evaded justice for decades. Using rare archival footage, this is a chilling and bizarre account of an egomaniacal murderer.
Serpico
Directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Al Pacino, this crime drama set during the Sixties is based on the true story of Frank Serpico, an idealistic NYPD officer who reveals corruption and extortion in his department. Serpico is ostracised and left without backup by his colleagues, culminating in his being injured during a drug raid. Pacino won a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for his portrayal.
History of the Eagles
This is a two-part documentary of about three hours which gives an in-depth look at the formation of The Eagles in 1971 in Los Angeles, through their rise to fame with such hits as Take It Easy and Hotel California (“you may check out any time you like, but you can never leave”) to the substance abuse and friction which saw their demise in 1980, and their reemergence in 1994.
Who Is Martin Mull?
Martin Mull will perhaps be remembered as Roseanne’s long-suffering boss, Leon. This heart-warming, informative documentary from actor Bob Saget, shows that Mull was a man of many talents, but in his heart, he was a painter first. This is a beautiful tribute to Mull, Saget, Fred Willard and Norman Lear who have all departed. Acting was just a job to enable Mull to follow his true passion.
The Seat
This entertaining documentary is one for F1 followers. It relates the dilemma caused by the departure of driver Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes team, and the contentious decision to promote 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli into Hamilton’s seat, showing team leader Toto Wolff, Antonelli and personnel as they bring the deal to fruition. It is interesting to see how World Champion Antonelli copes with his sudden exposure to life in Formula 1.
