Disney Princess: the Ultimate Concert Celebration
What a celebration this will be! All your favorite Disney heroines singing all those magical songs that mean so much across generations. The Little Mermaid’s Jodi Benson, Paige O’Hara aka Belle, Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho plus a host of Broadway royalty will participate in various productions of this spectacular event of tours and TV specials. An opportunity to bring out those special princess costumes.
The Brontes and Me: Sisters of Disruption
Returning to her hometown of Bradford, West Yorkshire, TV host Anita Rani explores the life of the legendary Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte giving this documentary a refreshing perspective from a South Asian teenager. Perceived as quiet, well-mannered Victorian women, they were spirited radicals who took joy in disrupting the societal formalities of the day who have become modern day feminist legends.
American Masters: Dick Van Dyke
This documentary was released as a celebration of the legendary Dick Van Dyke’s 100th birthday and his amazing 80-year career on Broadway, in television and cinema. It is an affectionate, nostalgic journey from his early stint as a TV host, the comedic The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and beyond, using archival footage, home movies, photos and interviews with fans and his peers in the industry.
Masterchef: the Wall
As the final hurdle before the grand finale, the Top 5 remaining pairs of amateur cooks must put their trust and vocal limits to the test as they cook in coordination, without seeing each other, separated by a solid eight-foot-high wall. With a one-hour time limit, they must cook a dish that matches their teammates perfectly, while the judges keep an eye on proceedings.
Dolly Parton: Here I Am
This biographical documentary on the legendary woman that is Dolly Parton, explores her life, music and career spanning 50 years as a much-loved and revered country singer. Combining archival footage with interviews from Dolly and many of her peers, the film journeys from her childhood in rural Appalachia to global recognition in song, movies and the founding of Dollywood, closing with a 50th anniversary celebration at the Grand Ole Opry.
Great Performances at the Met: Eugene Onegin
Deborah Warner’s 2013 season-opening production of Eugene Onegin focuses on the romantic despair of this dramatic opera, which follows the naïve country girl Tatiana, who falls instantly in love with the aloof, urbane nobleman Eugene Onegin. The cast features Anna Netrebko as Tatiana, Mariusz Kwiecien as Onegin, and Piotr Beczała as Lenski. Critics praised Conductor Valery Gergiev for the emotional resonance he brought to Tchaikovsky’s score.
Jamie Lee Curtis: Hollywood Call of Freedom
Jamie Lee Curtis embodies the Hollywood dream, from her famous parents to her rebellious youth, to Halloween, culminating in her extraordinary career and her defiance against Hollywood beauty stereotypes. The daughter of old-Hollywood actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, she has eschewed traditional standards of limitations placed on age and has given cinema a host of powerful, spirited heroines. An entertaining documentary fused with her vibrant personality.
