Our editors have picked the top new arrivals on Prime Video this week, featuring gripping crime dramas, acclaimed international series, blockbuster movies and binge-worthy TV favourites.

LEARNING TO DRIVE

A delightful comedy drama starring Patricia Clarkson as renowned New York literary critic Wendy, recently abandoned by her husband, who is forced to become self-sufficient and decides it is time to learn how to drive. Enter Ben Kingsley as Darwan, a gentle Sikh political refugee from India working as a part-time driving instructor, who is preparing for an arranged marriage. Cultural differences disappear as the two form an unexpected friendship.

MAGGIE MOORE(S)

John Slattery directs Jon Hamm as Police Chief Sanders, and nosy neighbor Tina Fey in this entertaining neo-noir crime comedy where incompetent sub-shop manager Jay Moore runs an expired-food scam. His wife Maggie discovers the scam and threatens to expose him. He hires a brutal deaf enforcer to scare Maggie, but he murders her. To confuse police, Jay orchestrates the murder of another unsuspecting Maggie Moore.

A FISH CALLED WANDA

This wonderfully witty, hilarious crime caper has landed on Prime. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his manic role as the pseudo-intellectual Otto who teams up with Jamie Lee Curtis as femme fatale Wanda and Michael Palin’s stuttering animal lover Ken for a diamond heist organized by British gang leader George. John Cleese is his repressed lawyer who Wanda must seduce, which enrages Otto, and unleashes utter chaos.

RIDE OR DIE

This girl-power espionage comedy in the vein of Thelma & Louise stars Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as best friends caught in a high-stakes chase across Europe. Judith is a forensic accountant and assassin, while Debbie is the underestimated wife of a British politician. A threat from Judith’s past resurfaces, which appears to involve Debbie’s husband, and the girls must outsmart criminal syndicates, police, and the secretive agency they work for.

THE CLAREMONT MURDERS

This true crime series tells of three young women who were murdered after leaving a nightclub in Perth, Western Australia between 1996 and 1997. The investigation took decades and haunted the lives of the victims’ families and police involved in the case. In 2016 a suspect was arrested for the murders of Jane Rimmer, Ciara Glennon and Sarah Spiers. Sarah’s body has never been recovered.

HARLAN COBEN’S LAZARUS

Crime author Harlan Coben’s adaptations are prevalent across streaming services. His first original TV series, starring Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy, has supernatural elements involved with the criminal factors. Forensic psychiatrist Dr Joel Lazarus returns home to investigate the unexpected, suspicious suicide of his father, which intersects with the unsolved murder of his twin sister. He is somewhat surprised when he receives assistance through visitations from other murder victims.

THE BOYS

This dark satirical superheroes series is not suitable for all the family. An TV-MA rating flags violence, language, sex and drugs. The comic book adaptation stars Meg Ryan’s son Jack Quaid as electronics expert Hughie, who joins an eclectic rebellious vigilante group when his girlfriend is accidentally obliterated by one of the corrupt Vought corporation’s Supes who has consumed the secret serum Compound V. An excellent soundtrack accompanies the explosive action.

AMERICAN DOPE: ACID DREAMS

During the 1950s, the CIA operated a mind control program involving LSD, which the documentary argues unknowingly made its way into the public domain, helping to create a massive drug culture spreading from college students to biker gangs and contributing to the rise of San Francisco’s famous Haight-Ashbury scene. What started out as a covert military project developed into a much wider drug problem. Accountability is the absent detail in this intriguing documentary.

FATAL ADDICTION: HEATH LEDGER

Australian actor Heath Ledger is the subject of this biographical documentary. From Ledger’s meteoric rise in Home and Away and Blackrock in the 1990s, to his Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight in 2008, using archival footage, with commentary from fellow actors, directors and medical experts, this documentary focuses on the difficulties and mental struggles accompanying celebrity, as well as Ledger’s use of prescription medications.

TOM CRUISE: THE LAST MOVIE STAR

This documentary explores the career, personal struggles, and impact of Tom Cruise as one of the last traditional cinematic icons. Tracing his path from Taps and The Outsiders to Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Cruise’s public relations challenges, and his dedication to physical commitment are examined, all fuelled by his personal magnetism and work ethic. As the face of Hollywood in the 1980s, Cruise remains extremely popular with his fans.
