Our editors have picked the top new arrivals on Prime Video this week, featuring gripping crime dramas, acclaimed international series, blockbuster movies and binge-worthy TV favourites.

Unlikely Angel

Dolly Parton brings love and down-to-earth advice to a grieving father and his children as deceased singer/apprentice angel Ruby Diamond, who is stopped at the gates of heaven as she is lacking in good deeds. Dolly would have been admitted immediately. Ruby’s mission is to reunite a fractured family on Christmas Eve. It has nostalgia in abundance where family comes first. A predictable, but uplifting film perfect for the holidays.

Black Diamond

Lust, obsession, murder – this “erotic” thriller has it all. Elena and her wealthy boyfriend Spencer are holed up in a snowy mountain cabin. With the arrival of rugged local cowboy and handyman Jesse, Elena is captivated, leading to an affair which lands her in unforeseen trouble. All three have their secrets, and Elena soon perceives that she needs to escape the unravelling situation. Telluride, Colorado provides the scenic backdrop.

January Man

Described as a neo-noir comedy-thriller with a serial killer attached, Kevin Kline stars as disgraced former detective Nick, who is re-engaged by his police commissioner brother Harvey Keitel, after pressure from City Hall. Nick has a brilliant sense of seeing what is hidden in the detail. During the investigation he also has liaisons with the mayor’s daughter and his sister-in-law. Rod Steiger as the mayor is a stand-out.

Texas Killing Fields

Inspired by real murders on the Interstate 45 in Texas, this is a capricious crime thriller with many plot threads to follow. Sam Worthington is local detective Mike and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is NYC cop Brian who team up to track a killer dumping body parts all over the marshland. When a local girl goes missing, the two detectives must battle time and the murderer, before there is another victim.

Neagley

As a spin-off to the Reacher series, Maria Sten stars as private investigator Frances Neagley who finds out a much-loved child-hood friend has died in a fatal accident, which she believes to be suspicious. On making further inquiries, all leads converge on Echo Point, a commune suspected of involvement dangerous psychedelic drug trials. Accompanying Neagley on her quest is local detective Hudson and a streetwise kid named Keno.

Elixir – Netherlands

This stylish drama series explores a topic which appears regularly in the spotlight. Rombauts Pharma is a family-owned pharmaceutical empire with power struggles and friction between Isabelle, who is put in charge by her ill CEO father, and her brother Julien who believes he should have been appointed. But dangerous side effects of an antidepressant deliver a crisis that will lead to deception and betrayal.

The Trial

This emotional legal thriller from Mexico stars Eugenio Derbez as Miguel, a father seeking justice for his daughter, Andrea, and Pedro Alonso as Raul who uses his wealth and influence to cover up the sexual assault committed by his son. The assault has irreparably damaged Andrea’s personality and Miguel will do anything to save her. And Raul Huerta will go to extreme lengths to protect his family’s reputation.

Murdertown

There are four seasons of this excellent British true-crime series where various UK towns and cities are the scene of many horrifying murder cases. Hosted by Katherine Kelly, Anita Rani, and Emilia Fox who examine tragic cases which have had a long-lasting effect on communities and families of victims, who are interviewed during the investigation, together with police and witnesses. A confronting series of true crime.

Death in Hollywood

Perhaps a little morose, but still an interesting series exploring the often-mysterious deaths of various figures in the film industry. There are those who are familiar and much admired, such as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Natalie Wood. The Black Dahlia case is included and other lesser-known cases. It is informative but can be sensationalistic. The narration is methodical and mostly devoid of expression.

David Gilmour Live at Circus Maximus, Rome

A truly emotional experience to hear favorite Pink Floyd tunes echo around the ancient Roman Circus Maximus, with tracks from Gilmour’s Luck and Strange, with beautiful duets with his daughter Romany Gilmour. Gilmour lets his soaring guitar work do the talking, taking everyone on this nostalgic musical journey through Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here and Breathe.
