Season 2 Episode Guide
Episode 1 - Episode 1On their way to an auction for a building neighbouring the Thrift, Robert and Eleanor are caught up in a horrific train crash on the underground near King William Street station. Robert suffers a broken arm but Eleanor is able to assist those injured in the accident with surprising consequences. She saves the life of Peter Mills who is a brutal East End villain. Once in the infirmary, he starts to terrorise the patients.

Episode 2 - Episode 2The Thrift has now been in operation for over a year and Eleanor thinks it may be time to move on. She applies for a part time position at St Jude's Hospital where she runs into expected opposition spearheaded by the charismatic Dr Finbar O'Neill. She also incurs her father's wrath when, to impress the young doctor, she breaches the trust of a patient.

Episode 3 - Episode 3Celebrations are in full swing to honour Robert's forthcoming election to the Royal College of Physicians. One of the guests is Sir William Fredericks, President of the College and an old friend, together with his feckless but likeable son Martin. Robert and Eleanor allow Martin to shadow them at work, medicine is his latest choice of profession. A mysterious woman arrives at the house. She is Robert's estranged sister Emily. She ran off 20 years before with a married man. Robert wants nothing to do with her but Eleanor persuades him that he is paranoid about an old scandal that no one will care about and that Emily has changed. The two women get along. Emily is fresh and fun and amused by her careerist niece. Eleanor also deals with real emotion and crisis when Dr Marsham's two year old daughter Molly is admitted to the Thrift with diphtheria. The experience undoes the taciturn Scot. He confesses his passion for Eleanor in a moment weakness.

Episode 4 - Episode 4An outbreak of cholera at the Thrift forces Eleanor to notify the local medical officer O'Neill. To her surprise, O'Neill decides to treat the victims at the Thrift rather than cart them off to a fever hospital. With Robert's experience of cholera from his army days, he knows that there is little he can do except palliative care. Most of his patients will die. O'Neill believes that he has a cure and starts to inject all the patients with a new anti-cholera serum. Thrown together by the epidemic and his pioneering work, Eleanor and O'Neill fall in love. When one of the patients dies not from cholera but from an arsenic compound, it appears O'Neill is experimenting blindly with the patients.

Episode 5 - Episode 5A Bramwell family friend Guy le Saux returns to London from Canada with a new wife Kathleen who is half his age. He 'selected' her from a Canadian orphanage. Kathleen is very fragile and when Eleanor examines her she finds suspicious bruises. Meanwhile, Daniel Bentley's widow has a 10 year old daughter Lil whom Eleanor wants to propose for Guy's programme for relocation to Canada.

Episode 6 - Episode 6It is February 1896 and a Valentine card arrives addressed to 'Dr Bramwell'. Robert assumes that it is meant for him, but cannot imagine who might have sent it. Eleanor has secured a substantial donation for the Thrift and decides to celebrate by taking Dr Marsham to a fair in a nearby street. There Eleanor rescues a girl who had been an attraction at a freak show because of her deformed head. She decides to try and correct the malformation by removing the cyst that has caused it.

Episode 7 - Episode 7Charles Sheldon, a supplier of surgical equipment to the Thrift, arrives with an emergency casualty. A flamboyantly dressed young woman who he says ran out in front of his carriage. When Eleanor examines the patient, she is shocked to discover it is in fact a young man Frederick Hackett. Back at the Bramwell home, Robert has been persuaded by widow Elizabeth Quail to entertain her 'spiritual leader' Mr Sullivan.

Episode 8 - Episode 8It is late winter 1896 and the Bramwells have gone to Eastbourne for a short break. Robert returns to London, but Eleanor stays on for a few days on her own. Or so she claims. In fact, she has arranged to meet Finn O'Neill there without telling her father. He reacts angrily to the news.
