Season 2 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Amityville

After two weeks of hiking in the mountains, Charles and Buddy return to the city. Happy to be back home, Charles walks into the house and is surprised to find several people he does not know. First there is 13 year-old Sarah, who seems very much at home reading on the sofa. In his room, Charles finds 12 year-old Adam, who has also moved in. Charles is beginning to question his sanity when he runs into Jill Pembroke, who is finishing packing and is anxious to explain. Mr. Pembroke has been offered a job in Seattle, and after considering, the entire family has decided to move. They have sublet the house to the Powells, who need Charles' help with their children in the same way they did.

  

Episode 2 - The Naked Truth

In order to impress Rebecca Stansbury, a beautiful art major, Charles acquires a print of an abstract painting by her favorite artist Arturo Kolodny. He also plans to attend an art seminar with Buddy, yet is forced to take Adam when Ellen leaves with Jamie and Sarah. At the seminar, Professor Wycliff mistakes Adam as a famous young artistic genius and after introducing him to the audience, presents the object of their study -- the female nude. To Charles' surprise the nude is Rebecca.

  

Episode 3 - Feud for Thought

Sarah is depressed because Lori Weston, a beautiful sweet girl in her class, reminds Sarah of her shortcomings. Meanwhile, Adam is having trouble with Kevin, a classmate from school. Walter insists he fight back, yet Charles advises he should take the intelligent and passive approach. Then Charles talks with Kevin's older brother who also threatened Adam...yet he sends "Homicidal" Herman to deal with Charles!

  

Episode 4 - The Egg and Us

Sarah and Jamie are given a project in Health class to take an egg and pretend it is a baby. Jamie names her egg "Egg" and Sarah names hers "Amanda." From the start Sarah takes meticulous care keeping a journal and carrying "Amanda" in a snuggly, while Jamie leaves "Egg" lying around. Meanwhile, Walter confides in Charles and Buddy that he ran into an old girlfriend of his, Gloria, with whom he spent a passionate and unforgettable night forty years ago. When he introduces Gloria to the boys, Buddy is taken aback...it is his grandmother.

  

Episode 5 - The Lone Arranger

Charles is doing well in school, and life is moving along in a positive fashion until he receives notice from the bank that the government is reviewing his student loan. Meanwhile, Jamie hopes to raise her "C" grade on a play she wrote by videotaping it and using the family as the cast. Buddy accompanies Charles to the bank where Mr. Willard (guest star Ben Stein) informs Charles that the loan has been cancelled.

  

Episode 6 - American Teen

American Teen magazine is having a contest to pick the girl that best represents American teenagers. When Jamie, who wants to become a model, cannot write the essay necessary, Sarah tape records a speech for Jamie. Then she confides that she feels being a teenager is seven years of insecurity, doubt, and embarrassment. When the new issue of the magazine comes out, Jamie shows the family that Sarah is one of the ten finalists. Sarah is angry and blames Charles for sending in her essay.

  

Episode 7 - Buddy Comes to Dinner

Lauren, Charles' friend, is upset that her leading man in the school play is Buddy. Buddy is intent on doing the play to prove to Charles that he is not an under-achiever. Charles understands but asks him to keep his relationship with Lauren on a professional level. He explains he has a date with her and intends to take her on a ski trip. Charles pats Buddy on the back, accidentally causing Buddy to fall and sprain his ankle. Buddy recuperates in Charles' room and enjoys the attention he is receiving; so much so that he refuses to get well.

  

Episode 8 - A Fox In the Henhouse

Walter announces to Charles and Buddy that Matty Whitford, who went to the Naval Academy with his son, is coming to dinner and hands them a pot of Fiji stew. Lt. Whitford arrives to a warm welcome and immediately lusts for Ellen. He asks Charles if he is involved with Ellen, whom he assumes must be lonely with her husband abroad, and Charles flatly denies his accusations. Then Charles and Walter taste the stew and suffer from a case of food poisoning resulting from bad clams. Ellen rushes them to the hospital for observation. Charles is terribly nervous about leaving Ellen alone with Lt. Whitford, yet Walter and Ellen refuse to believe Charles.

  

Episode 9 - Pizza Parlor Protest

Sid from Sid's Pizza Parlor, Buddy and Charles' favorite meeting place, receives a letter from Harrison Bartlett, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees, that his property has been selected as one of two possible sites for the faculty parking lot. Buddy and Charles throw a party and invite Mr. Bartlett to prove Sid's popularity. Mr. Bartlett informs them that Sid's Pizza Parlor was chosen to be torn down by a vote taken in a special session. Charles is upset that his 'home away from home' is facing extinction.

  

Episode 10 - Trade Off

Buddy and Charles have agreed to take Lori and Annette to the Kenny Loggins concert which is sold out. While Buddy tries to find tickets, Charles decides to barter his way into freedom. In order to have Ellen home the night of the concert, which means she has to take Adam to the basketball game that evening -- Charles makes an agreement with Sarah to type Adam's paper, in agreement that Jamie will lend her the video camera, in agreement that Walter will lend Jamie his Navy jacket -- as long as Adam washes his car. With everything sorted out -- Charles has Buddy barter the tickets from Les Marlin in agreement he will babysit.

  

Episode 11 - Dating

After forty years Walter is going out on a date and he makes Charles promise to keep it a secret form the family. Then Sarah asks Charles to convince her mother she can go to an afternoon movie with a boy, yet Ellen flatly refuses. Ellen's plans to go out to a Broadway play go sour and Charles agrees to attend. Immediately Sarah reiterates her mother's saying that boy plus girl equals date, yet Ellen emphasizes that Charles and her are friends. Charles keeps Walter's date secret which inconveniences his plans to attend the play with Ellen.

  

Episode 12 - Music, Music, Mayhem

When Buddy receives a new stereo cassette player from his parents, he sells his old unit to Charles for $47.98. Walter warns Charles he is buying a set of problems. Then Walter tells Charles the cassette player destroyed his Glenn Miller tape. Charles asks Buddy for the money back so he can buy a new tape for Walter, but Buddy insist the tape machine was working fine before he sold it to Charles. The argument becomes heated, and it appears their friendship is over.

  

Episode 13 - Buddy in Charge

When Charles takes leave of his duties as au pair to visit with his parents, Buddy offers to take his place to impress Debbie, a girl from school who loves children. Ellen and Charles reluctantly agree. Buddy handles each situation with common sense -- which frustrates the children. When Sarah is kept after school for missing class, Buddy asks Jamie to look after Adam. Meanwhile, Adam runs away from home. Charles drops by to see how things are going and Walter tells him that if Buddy makes one more mistake, he will replace Buddy and Charles permanently.

  

Episode 14 - Isn't That What's Her Face?

Charles volunteers to be on the hospitality committee to help incoming female students acclimate to college life. To his shock, Dorothy Prezt arrives, complete with horn-rimmed glasses, an over-sized coat, and ratty-looking hair. As Charles explains the campus to Dorothy, she slowly takes off her coat, glasses and wig displaying the spectacular-looking actress -- Darby Peterson. She begs him to keep her secret and be her friend so that she can get a good education.

  

Episode 15 - A Date from Heck

Charles and Buddy have the Powell house for themselves and decide to recruit dates. At Sid's Pizza Parlor, Charles befriends Anna, a pretty new student from Yugoslavia, who quickly agrees to come to the house and cook dinner. Unfortunately, the plans made by the Powell family are cancelled and Charles bribes Buddy to take them to a concert in the park. As the evening approaches, a thunderstorm begins, yet Anna arrives safely...with her mother, father, and brother.

  

Episode 16 - Mama Mia!

Charles' mother, Lillian (Ellen Travolta), comes to dinner at the Powell home, and soon the children learn intimate details about Charles' childhood. Charles feels humiliated, embarrassed -- and that his mother will not look at him as an adult. The next night, Lillian agrees to stay with Jamie, Sarah and Adam enabling Charles and Buddy to go to a party. Unbeknownst to Lillian, Jamie talks her into taking them to a horror movie their mother did not want them to see.

  

Episode 17 - Weekend Weary

Charles has to forgo a weekend trip to the beach when the doctor in the college infirmary reports he is suffering from academic exhaustion and must have total relaxation. The Powells are planning a yard sale, and Ellen gives the family strict orders to let Charles rest. Charles has a hard time watching the family work and eventually carries a few boxes outside. When it begins to rain, Charles helps the family to carry everything back into the house. The yard sale is moved to the next day, and only James will be able to monitor the sale. Charles assures Ellen and Walter he will keep a watchful eye on the situation.

  

Episode 18 - U.F. Oh, No!

Both Charles and Adam see what they believe to be a U.F.O. (Unidentified Flying Object), and Jamie and Sarah are convinced there is a furry creature -- possible alien -- running around the house. Walter is angry that Charles is feeding the children's fantasies until he also sees the blue light in the night sky.

  

Episode 19 - The Case of the Mock Turtle

Sarah returns from her nature trip to discover her pet turtle, Ross, is gone and accuses Adam of killing him. She states that Adam left the gate open and that Ross wandered into the street and was killed -- though there is no body. Walter immediately grounds Adam for negligence, and Adam convinces Charles to represent him in a trial as he has been unjustly accused.

  

Episode 20 - Twice Upon a Time, Pt. 1

Sarah is having doubts about going on her first date with Michael Simpson to the school dance. Then Gwendolyn Pierce, Charles' old girlfriend, arrives and meets Jamie, Sarah and Adam. She explains her family moved to California, and she broke up with Charles to attend school near her family. Charles is elated to be with her and plans a fun-filled week so she won't want to leave. Gwendolyn asks Buddy if Charles has been dating, as she is seeing someone very special in California -- Richard. Buddy becomes upset and asks why she is visiting Charles, and she explains to confirm whether she loves him...since Richard asked her to marry him and Charles has not.

  

Episode 21 - Twice Upon a Time, Pt. 2

Charles asks Gwendolyn to marry him and she explains that Richard asked her first. She leaves to make her decision. Lillian asks Charles if Gwendolyn has given him an answer and assures him if she is 'his' -- he won't lose her. Buddy arrives at the house to talk with Charles and Gwendolyn enters announcing she will marry Charles. Buddy is devastated. The next day, Charles wants to set a date and talk with her parents, yet Gwendolyn tells him she does not want to rush the situation, especially since her parents think she is marrying Richard next month.

  

Episode 22 - A Job from Heck

Charles is overwhelmed with his schoolwork, the Powell children and Lillian (Ellen Travolta), his mother, who is visiting. He confides in Buddy that he is tired of solving the children's problems and becomes irate when Lillian and the Powell children appear at Sid's Pizza parlor -- his 'sanctuary.' The next day Jamie decides to get a part-time job to pay off a pair of expensive boots she purchased. He is shocked when he finds her working at Sid's as a waitress wearing a sophisticated hairdo and makeup.

  

Episode 23 - Baby Doll

Charles is worried that Lillian's purchase of Sid's Pizza Parlor will leave her penniless due to the fact the restaurant is suffering financial trouble. He and Buddy take her last $900.00 and offer to launch an advertising campaign. They secretly plan to throw a 'Grand Opening Under New Management' party. Charles places an advertisement for the party which costs $200.00 and has a cashier's check made up for the remaining $700.00. Unfortunately, there is a mix-up and the check disappears. With no money for entertainment, decorations or amenities -- Charles is convinced the party is doomed.

  

Episode 24 - Lillian Putts a Round

Lillian is invited to stay at the Powell home for five to seven days by Ellen and Walter. Charles, however, rejects the idea on the grounds he will be treated like a child. To compound his problems, his double-date is cancelled due to Buddy's allowance being cut off because of his declining grades in school. Charles pairs Walter and Lillian for a game of golf so that his mother can socialize with people her own age. In the meantime, Buddy secures a job as a door-to-door salesman and his first victim is Walter.

  

Episode 25 - Her Brother's Keeper

Charles is frantic that he and Buddy are not prepared for their physics final. When Joyce and Stephanie come over for a date, Joyce mentions that her brother Duane is a genius in physics. They agree that Duane could tutor Charles and Buddy -- if they in turn get Duane out of his shell. They begin working with him and Charles tries to explain that there is more to college than just studying...that he needs to relax. Charles, Buddy, Stephanie and Joyce gather for a Saturday night and Charles is pleased that they are ready for the physics final -- then Duane walks in...

  

Episode 26 - The Undergraduate

Joan Robinson, a beautiful woman and Ellen's cousin, arrives at the house for a surprise visit. Ellen is out of town but Walter and the children are thrilled to see her. Charles and Buddy fall in love with her and there is a definite attraction between Joan and Charles. Unfortunately, Joan is married, yet she tells Charles she wants 'his body'. Walter overhears the comment and warns Charles to stay away from Joan.
