Season 3 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Yule Laff

Charles, Lillian and the Powell family rent a cabin in the mountains to spend a quiet Christmas in the snow. Walter agrees to follow later in the day with the food and presents while Buddy drives the family to the cabin. They arrive to find a dirty and bleak cabin, yet Charles initiates the Christmas spirit by cutting down a tree to serve as the Christmas tree. Buddy tries to leave but learns the roads have been closed due to the snowstorm. The situation worsens when the phone line goes dead, and there is no food except some canned mushrooms. In addition, the chimney is stopped up causing the cabin to fill with smoke. Eventually, all are complaining that Charles' idea is ruining their holiday.

  

Episode 2 - Piece of Cake

Charles is worried about meeting Commander Powell for the first time...then is given four hours to get the house and children in order for the homecoming. Charles assures Ellen and Walter that it would be a "piece of cake" to have everything ready and all errands accomplished before Commander Powell arrives home. Soon after -- everything goes wrong.

  

Episode 3 - Dorm Warnings

Charles is ecstatic as he has been named 'Student of the Year' based on his scholastic record, extracurricular activities, and the fact he works to help raise three children while attending school full time. He tells Walter that he will fly to Washington, D.C. to receive the award from the President of the United States. Pat Walker, a reporter form the New Brunswick Beacon, arrives to interview Charles. Over the course of the conversation, Jamie, Sarah and Walter overhear Pat conclude that Charles is clinging to a family that has outgrown him -- and he won't leave because he can't admit he has also outgrown them.

  

Episode 4 - Speechless

Charles tries to convince Jamie that college is fun and she should take the college preparatory courses offered in high school. Then he becomes upset when Buddy tells him that the paper he wrote on General Custer must be presented orally in class or they will receive a failing grade. Lillian explains to Buddy that when Charles was twelve he was giving a speech in class and his voice cracked. The children laughed and ridiculed him and since that time, Charles is unable to speak in front of an audience.

  

Episode 5 - Infatuation

Buddy is concerned that Charles is contemplating marriage since he is steadily dating Linda. Then Charles agrees to entertain the daughter of Walter's close friend, Colonel Barkley. He is not prepared when the stunningly beautiful Trish enters -- a famous model. There is an instant attraction and soon Charles is seeing Linda by night -- and Trish by day.

  

Episode 6 - Role Model

Jamie confides in Ellen and Charles that she has joined the 'Better Image School of Modeling.' She was in the mall when Miss Allison Lane, who runs the school, said she had potential as a model. Then she explains that once the beginner's course is over, she will need help to pay for the intermediate course which costs $389.00 Charles is convinced the school is a fraud. He and Buddy decide to check it out, and Allison immediately tells them they have potential as male models.

  

Episode 7 - The Extremely Odd Couple

Lillian is disturbed that Walter takes advantage of Charles, and Charles worries their feud will cost him his job. When Buddy gives Charles tickets for Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, he gives a ticket to Walter and one to Lillian in hopes of a reconciliation. Later that night, they find Walter and Lillian dancing together to a Glenn Miller tape. Walter and Lillian begin spending time together and Charles worries that Walter will hurt or take advantage of his mother.

  

Episode 8 - Poppa, the Sailor Man

A contemporary and acquaintance of Walter dies leaving him depressed and convinced that time is running out. Charles contacts Walter's father, Ben "Buzz" Powell and brings him out from Florida to cheer up Walter. When Walter sees Buzz, he is shocked as they haven't spoken in ten years. Buzz was also a seaman, but he is the opposite of Walter -- he enjoys life! The two clash and Walter wants his father out of the house. Buzz confides in Charles that his visit is important, as he doesn't have much longer to live.

  

Episode 9 - Bottle Baby

Buddy's sister, Bunny, arrives for an unexpected visit and is invited to the Powell home for dinner. She asks Buddy to lie and tell their parents he asked her to visit since she used their mother's credit card for the plane ticket. Later that evening, she arrives at Sid's Pizza Parlor and sits on Charles' lap, then she kisses him. She leaves his table to sit with two college students and eventually leaves with them for a fraternity party. Charles becomes concerned and begs Buddy to find out what kind of trouble Bunny is in.

  

Episode 10 - Dear Charles

Charles is trying to get a job on the Brunswick Journal-American through Gayle Landis, the editor. She offers him a part-time job as "Dear Amy," writing advice to lovesick readers. He agrees to be near Gayle, yet she asks him to 'spice up' his writing. Then Charles and Buddy come across a letter they are convinced was written by Sarah about secretly meeting a boy. Charles becomes worried and writes her back as "Dear Amy" with the suggestion she should talk to her mother, and not sneak around. Unfortunately, the article printed was not written by Charles and instead suggests they go to a motel!

  

Episode 11 - The Pickle Plot

Charles and Buddy are faced with the decision to choose a major as they are entering their Junior year in college. Buddy invites Charles to go with him to the college counselor who will review his aptitude test. Charles' Uncle Joe…'the pickle king of Brooklyn' arrives at the house and offers Charles a job, an office and the potential to make a great deal of money.

  

Episode 12 - The Buddy System

Buddy is devastated when Elayne, his girlfriend, sends him a 'turkeygram' stating he is an embarrassment and they are finished. Though Charles tries to convince Buddy people do care about him, members of the Powell family enter and throw barbs at Buddy. Charles explains to the family that Buddy needs to have his confidence pumped up. Walter enrolls Buddy in a self-improvement course taught by his friend, Harry Hileman...a former Marine Sergeant.

  

Episode 13 - Sarah Stops Out

The children agree to help Charles around the house if he will talk with their mother about approving their special requests: Adam wants to stay up all Saturday night and watch television; Jamie wants to streak her hair 'conservatively;' and Sarah wants to go to the movies on Saturday -- with a boy, unchaperoned. Ellen hesitantly agrees. Meanwhile, Charles and Buddy manage to purchase two tickets to the play-off game from a fourteen year-old mafia type named Gary. Saturday night arrives and Charles is shocked to see that Jamie streaked her hair orange and pink. Then to make matters worse, Sarah's date turns out to be none other than Gary!

  

Episode 14 - Trading Papers

Charles is ecstatic he received an "A" in his worst subject, Creative Writing, until he learns that he accidentally switched papers with Sarah for her English class. Sarah tells Charles that her teacher thought the paper was so bad she gave her a C minus and threw it out. Charles is in an ethical quandary: if he does not pass the course, he could lose his student loan because of a low grade point average. He decides to explain the misunderstanding to Sarah's teacher -- but not to his professor. Buddy is stunned and disappointed by Charles' cover-up and keeping a grade he did not earn.

  

Episode 15 - Five Easy Pizzas

Lillian leaves Charles in charge of Sid's Pizza Parlor while she is out of town. Buddy informs Charles that the 'Roving Gourmet' is planning to visit Sid's and would like to do an article on the restaurant. Charles realizes that a good review would mean great business, and a bad review could mean death to the pizza parlor. The Powell family agrees to eat at Sid's and rave about the food. Charles meets Sid's new chef, Dino Firenzi -- "the greatest pizza chef west of Naples." That evening, Charles greets each customer cheerfully since he does not know who the Roving Gourmet really is. Charles is devastated when Dino quits because he cannot take Buddy's constant interference.

  

Episode 16 - Getting In

Charles and Buddy are trying to get into the fraternity, Delta Alpha Nu, and withstand a myriad of humiliating tests. Buddy is convinced he will become a member due to the fact his father, grandfather and uncle were Delta Alphs. They manage to garner a large amount of articles and points necessary for the scavenger hunt and prepare to take the written exam. Meanwhile, Adam has dropped his friendship with Kevin as he has found an exciting new friend by the name of Larry. Larry, however, is troublesome and dishonest. Charles is told by Travis, head of the frat house, that he has been accepted, but Buddy is not Delta Alpha Nu material.

  

Episode 17 - Hero Today, Gone Tomorrow

While at Sid's Pizza Parlor, Charles and Buddy unknowingly stumble upon a hold-up and manage to apprehend the robber. Buddy sensationalizes the capture to the press and plans to use his status as a 'hero.' Later that day, however, Buddy returns to the Powell home in disguise to report that the criminal, Eddie Drummond, is out on bail. Buddy convinces Charles that Eddie will return to seek vengeance!

  

Episode 18 - Dutiful Dreamer

Walter learns that the house they have been renting is being sold, and Ellen announces she lost her job in a budget cut-back. Ellen decides to get a job selling real estate, but they still face a financial crisis in the interim. Charles is distraught that the family will be displaced and he will lose his job. That night, he has a dream wherein he sees Jamie in rags scrubbing the floor, and she is calling Charles her Fairy Godfather; Walter is a one-eyed pirate searching for a treasure map; Adam is a cynical child; Sarah is dressed in Southern finery and speaks like Scarlett O'Hara, and Lillian is a jet-setter who does not know her son. To make matters worse, Count Buddy arrives dressed in 18th Century fashion announcing he is the landowner and wants them out!

  

Episode 19 - Berkling Up Is Hard to Do

Charles is assisting his history professor in a summer seminar, and he is excited with the project of updating the history textbooks to include more current events. Meanwhile, Buddy is planning their end-of-the-summer party. Jamie enters and confides in Charles that Steven Berkle, the boy she has been dating, has become extremely possessive and she wants to keep her dating horizons open. Charles is warned by Mrs. Powell not to get involved in Jamie's romantic affairs. Later, Jamie tells Charles she took his advice and invited Brad over. Just as Brad is about to invite Jamie to a party -- Steven arrives, complete with flowers, a candle and live music. When Jamie asks what it is about -- Steven says it was Charles' idea...

  

Episode 20 - Runaround Charles

Charles inadvertently agrees to help Sarah and Jamie out on the same night and accepts a double-date with Buddy, his date Linda, and a girl named Julie -- a girl he really likes. He works out a schedule with Buddy whereby he can meet everyone's needs -- but all goes awry when schedules change.

  

Episode 21 - Where the Auction Is

Charles agrees to be 'auctioned off' at the Sigma Delta Sorority House Annual Auction, when he thinks Jeanie, a new transfer student, will 'buy' him. Unfortunately, she is outbid, and he is 'bought' by a gorgeous coed for $150. He learns, however, she is a buyer's representative, and he now must do whatever Jamie, Sarah and Adam ask of him for three days. The children go out of their way to find the most degrading and humiliating tasks for Charles, and Walter reminds him he must suffer the consequences of allowing himself to be 'bought'.

  

Episode 22 - Barbelles

Charles is hurting from breaking up with Laura. He agrees to go on a double date with Buddy and Tammy, Buddy's aerobics instructor. Charles' date is Beth, a female bodybuilder, and they enjoy each other's company. They become inseparable -- then Beth's ex-boyfriend, Mike, also a bodybuilder, threatens Charles.

  

Episode 23 - The Boy Who Loved Women

Sarah's friend, Mark, whom she has been dating, meets Jamie and immediately invites her to the opening of a teen club. Jamie accepts, not knowing that Mark is seeing Sarah. They arrive home that evening, and Charles asks Mark if Sarah knows he took Jamie out. Mark replies he couldn't help himself, and Sarah was at a birthday party. When Sarah and Jamie learn the truth -- they become furious and refuse to speak to each other. Charles tries to get them to talk...but Jamie gives the impression that if a boy had a choice, he would not pick Sarah.

  

Episode 24 - The Blackboard Bungle

Charles is assigned to be a teacher's aide in Jamie's health and hygiene class much to Jamie's consternation. Charles introduces himself to the teacher, Mr. Merken (Jerry Van Dyke), who has a tired and negative attitude towards the students and teaching profession. The next day in class, Mr. Merken hands the class over to Charles who is extremely nervous. The topic is human sexuality, and Charles cannot bring himself to openly name the anatomical parts. Jamie begins heckling him to such a point that he assigns her three hours of detention on Saturday -- the day that Jamie is to cheerlead the football game.

  

Episode 25 - The Heart Burglar

Sarah is teamed with Sean as a study partner for physics. And Jamie guesses that Charles really likes Carol, Buddy's girlfriend; and Carol, in turn likes Charles; and Sarah likes Sean. All the while, Sarah emphasizes that Sean is strictly a 'study-buddy.' Buddy asks Charles to pick up Carol and they will all meet at the Powell house to go to the basketball game. When Sarah learns that Sean is coming by the house that evening, she takes more effort to dress nicely -- then becomes furious to learn that Sean is also going to the game. Following the game, Carol kisses Charles, and they admit their attraction for each other. Then Buddy tells Charles he wants him to date Carol because he and Carol really have nothing in common.

  

Episode 26 - May The Best Man Lose

The city schools are having a Roman Fact Forum, just like in ancient Rome, with the proceeds going to the Children's Hospital. Charles agrees to be Sarah's 'gladiator;' Buddy becomes Jamie's 'gladiator;' and Adam gets Herman Holloway, a football player, to be his 'gladiator.' They arrive in their togas at Sid's Pizza Parlor for the first round...and learn that the student who misses a question gets a pie thrown in the face. The three manage to make it into the finals. Adam takes Buddy aside and talks him into throwing the game so that Sarah can win.
