Season 1 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Seeing in Colour

This episode reveals how, millions of years ago, the first animals had eyes that were unable to distinguish colour -- yet as that changed, 'seeing in colour' gave animals many advantages, whether to find food, attract a mate or warn off an enemy.

Episode 2 - Surprising Colours

With new science and specialist cameras, David Attenborough explores some of the surprising ways that animals use colour, as he travels from the ocean to the rainforest and beyond.

Episode 3 - Hiding in Colour

This episode reveals that some animals use color to hide and disappear into the background, or to trick and deceive. David Attenborough reveals some of the natural world’s most cunning tricksters and masters of disguise. On Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, a blue-striped blenny changes its colors to deceive and launch an attack, and on the island of Cuba, brilliantly colored snails each sport their own unique combination of stripes and patterns.

Episode 4 - Chasing Colour

This episode tells the stories behind the scientific research on animal colours - from robotic frogs wrestling with real-life counterparts, to spiders wearing eyeliner to attract mates. We also reveal the challenges of making the series - from developing specialist camera systems to the grueling endurance of lying motionless on a boiling mudflat for hours. We witness the way colour is changing in a warming world and learn of the effect this is having on animals - and how some are coping in surprising ways.
