Episode 1 - Goals

It’s the beginning of pre season for brand new all-girl soccer team, Mustangs, and striker Marnie can’t wait to get started with her BFF, Liv. But the new team’s got problems. They have no uniforms, no dedicated change rooms, can barely field a team and their coach - Marnie’s mum, Jen - is clueless about the beautiful game. Things aren’t great at home for Marns either. Jen has got herself a new boyfriend - Kev - and Marnie is feeling the pain of sharing her space. Liv reckons they should get Danny to coach. He's the grumpy old Serbian guy that runs the local milk bar and he used to be a total football legend back in the day. Marnie and Liv go on a recruitment drive, signing up over scheduled Anusha - who might just be able to squeeze them in between cello, judo and advanced Farsi - and unsporty benchwarmer, Bella - who once claimed she had a period that lasted a term to get out of swimming. When it comes to match day, the Mustangs have the numbers and although things get off to a shaky start with the new players, Marnie scores a spectacular goal in the second half. Despite losing the game, the Mustangs celebrate - they have a team so they have a season. Game on! And Danny agrees to coach on the condition that Marnie helps out in his shop. Feels like things are looking up. Until Marnie realizes that Kev is moving in, and she has to share a room with his daughter, rhythmic gymnast and all round sparkly girl, Lara. Disaster!

Episode 2 - Like a Boss

Despite acquiring experienced new coach Danny, the Mustangs still have a long way to go. The girls run into conflict with Gabe and the boys over sharing the changing rooms and are given a sub-standard gravel pitch to play on. And when they get accused of “playing like girls”, it’s the last straw for Marnie. It’s time to fight back. After Marnie’s changing room sit-in fails miserably, Bella suggests that the way to beat the boys is to challenge them - they won’t be able to resist. So Marnie throws down the gauntlet and suggests a golden goal game against the boys team. If the girls win, they get change room equality, if they lose they must get changed in a tent. Game day and the girls defence is rock solid but don’t have the numbers to mount a serious attack. After half time, Ruby, a footballing hotshot from the US, offers to join the Mustangs and turns out to be a total gun. As the girls’ defend, they get the ball to Ruby and the Mustangs score. The ‘Stangs are thrilled but Ruby can’t quite work out why - their prize is a smelly old changing room with a dirty urinal.

Episode 3 - Can't Even

The Mustangs are looking forward to the first game of the season proper and Liv is apprehensive about her goalkeeping strategy. But Marnie’s got her own problems. Previously used to being the star, she’s increasingly jealous of new hotshot Ruby. And after the players’ kits finally arrive, Marnie draws unnecessary attention to her friend’s XXL-sized jersey and Liv gets upset and leaves. Nice one, Marns… not! Ruby visits Liv to see if she’s OK about the shirt disaster, reassuring her that it’s not about size, it’s about what your body can do, that counts. Ruby reveals that she is gay and the girls have a D & M, finding some common ground and talking goalie tactics in a way that Marnie's never had time for. With the first match getting closer, the bad vibe couldn’t have come at a worse time for Marnie. She knows she has to sort things out with her BFF but when she sees her bestie and Ruby chilling out together, she storms off before properly clearing the air with Liv - Ruby is totally stealing her friend as well as her position on the team. Game day and it’s a real nail-biter. A newly body confident Liv charges out of goal and manages to level the scores with a cracking finish. Marnie and Liv tentatively patch things up but it’s clear that Ruby has come between them.

Episode 4 - Game Changer

After losing a close and exhausting match, the Mustangs realise they must get fitter if they want to start winning. Marnie tries to work on her fitness at home but is distracted by Lara doing stretches and gymnastic moves outside with Jen. Angry and jealous, she finds Lara’s phone and posts an unflattering gif of her messing up a move. Marnie immediately feels bad but it’s too late - Lara’s revenge time bomb is definitely ticking… During fitness training, Marnie is surprised when Lara turns up to join. Is this part of Lara’s revenge? Marnie’s not so sure she likes Lara being around on and off the pitch but the rest of the team are adamant - Lara should totally play for the Mustangs this weekend. Bella pretends she’s actually been training when her Dad picks her up. But this time, she’s rumbled by Anusha, who is forced to help her out with the lie. Anusha is curious - what is it with this girl who doesn’t even want to try? Mustangs vs Magpies and the revenge time bomb finally explodes when Lara sabotages the team, frustrating Marnie to the point where she gets a red card. With Marnie on the bench, Ruby gives Lara an earful and they start working as a team. Lara uses her gymnastics prowess to score and Marnie is forced to watch the first Mustangs’ win from the sidelines. Back at home, Marnie and Lara forge an uneasy truce and Marnie invites Lara to play for the Mustangs permanently.

Episode 5 - Girl Crush

Bella is forced to play in a match but when her moment comes, things go horribly wrong and Danny sacks Bella from the Mustangs. To make matters worse, her dad says he’s coming to her next game and bringing the whole family in support. How is she going to hide the fact that she’s no longer even on the team? A curious Anusha visits Bella to try and get to know her a little more. It’s clear that she and Bella are from very different worlds - Anusha is busy with her over scheduled iCalendar, while Bella is quietly immersed in her pile of novels. Bella has been encouraged into soccer by her dad but it’s clear that it’s not sport she craves, but the connection and the camaraderie of friendship. Meantime, the connection between Ruby and Marnie is not exactly firing and Liv decides the best way to make them get on is to “accidentally” invite them both to a sleepover. But it seems some friendships can’t be forced. Bella blames Anusha for the predicament she’s in but when Nush suggests just wriggling out of the game like she usually does, Bella admits that this time, she doesn’t want to make an excuse. She wants to play. Pitch side before the game, Danny sees a new fire in Bella’s eyes and allows her on the field where - thanks to Anusha’ s support - she manages a killer header and actually participates. After the game, Danny gives Bella her jersey back. Not only is she now a real part of the Mustangs, she’s gained a friend in Anusha.

Episode 6 - Otp

The girls play a mixed futsal match with the boys and hormones are raging. Now that Liv and Hamit, (of the Mustangs boys team) are officially an item, romance is in the air and Willow lets slip that she thinks Marnie and Gabe are OTP - one true pairing. But Marnie either can’t see it or won’t admit it. She can't imagine kissing Gabe... can she? Determined to move the budding romance forward, Lara organises a party. The gang arrives, dressed up and full of expectation, apart from Marns, who is just full of mouthwash and toothpaste to make sure her breath is minty fresh. Anusha’s set one of targets about kissing at the party but not only does she get knocked back, she realises that Bella has managed to sneak a kiss before her. What’s that all about? Meantime, Marnie and Gabe are clearly feeling the pressure of the moment and after a few toe curling attempts, only manage a near miss of a first kiss before falling off the trampoline. Awk-ward! The morning after and Marnie feels like she has to let Gabe down gently. If she was going to kiss anyone, it would be him. But she’s just not ready for this boyfriend/girlfriend stuff. Marnie is content being best mates.

Episode 7 - Kick It Like A Girl

The Mustangs are on a road trip, heading off to play in a round robin competition. Anusha’s bunking in with Bella but she’s still upset after getting snubbed at the party, when Bella got a kiss. She doesn’t think she should have been second banana, especially to someone as socially awkward as Bels. The tournament kicks off with Mustangs vs. Wildcats and that rivalry is as fierce as it ever was but at the end of Day 1, the Mustangs are in last place on the ladder. Gutted. Anusha tries to rally the team and suggests that they need a new leader. They decide to put it to a vote, with Marnie and Ruby looking like contenders as well as Anusha hoping this is her moment to be top banana. But Liv secretly rigs the outcome so that Marnie can keep her job, disappointing Ruby and devastating Nush. Captain Marnie declares that it’s time to go to work and Danny trains the Mustangs harder than ever. Day 2 and it’s too late for the Mustangs to win the trophy but they can knock off the competition’s leaders - the Wildcats. Although Bella offers to be first sub, the girls are adamant they need her awesome header skills. She’s fast becoming one of their stars and Anusha just can’t handle it. On the pitch, Bels goes for a header but finds Anusha’s foot firmly holding her down. Injured and sore, Bella is helped off the field but she still manages to forgive Anusha for losing it. Despite the speed bumps, their friendship is just too precious for both of them. Before the team head home, Marnie catches Ruby talking with Michaela and her Mum. Something is going down and Marnie’s got a bad feeling.

Episode 8 - Om Me Gee

Marnie enlists Danny’s help to work out what’s so great about the Wildcats anyway. He suggests she needs to ‘know her enemy’ so Marnie goes spying at the Wildcats clubhouse and is stunned to see their amazing facilities, fantastic changing rooms… and Ruby sitting in the clubhouse for a team talk. Marnie’s hunch was right. Ruby is defecting to the enemy. Marnie and Liv organize a Nachos Night to remind Ruby what she’s giving up. They might have a spectacular clubhouse and professional training drills, but the Wildcats don’t know fun times and guacamole like Marnie and Liv. Marnie tries her best but she totally over does the faked fun and the whole night falls flat on its face. Ruby feeling uncomfortable and guilty, tries to leave the party, prompting Marnie to reveal her true motives. She tries to convince Ruby to stay with the Mustangs. But Ruby’s having none of it. Given half the chance, she knows that Marnie would do the same thing - they both want to be the best. They both want to win. And the Wildcats is where it’s at. Not the Mustangs, despite the nachos. When Ruby turns up at Mustangs training to handover her kit, Danny drops his bombshell. Whatever Ruby might think, she isn’t allowed to play for anyone but the Mustangs until the end of the season. She’s registered for the team and it’s too late to change. They’re stuck with each other. The Mustangs have to play with the traitor and Ruby has to suck it up.

Episode 9 - Flawless

Lara is well and truly infiltrating every aspect of Marnie’s life - her bedroom, her home and her team - and Marnie is totally over it. Having previously sucked up to Tom the ref when he embarked on a painful bout of mansplaining on the offside rule, Lara dives like a diva and gets awarded a dubious free-kick by Tom. Marnie is furious at Lara for staging such a dodgy and calculated move and her inner frustrations and insecurities bubble to the surface. Lara fearing Marnie might be onto something with her comments about Lara’s attachment to social media approval. Maybe life is not all about ‘likes’ and ‘views’. She’s also sick of the emphasis on her looks. Tired and miserable, Lara heads to Danny’s and bumps into Ruby. Ruby knows how it feels to be an outsider and suggests Lara relies too much on other people’s feedback - she doesn’t need their likes to be liked. She just needs to like herself. Lara returns to the field for the Mustangs and surprises Marnie with her new found confidence. She plays in full make up, happy and comfortable in her own skin. The thing about labels is, we just have to try and outrun them.

Episode 10 - Rouk?

Anusha is devastated. She’s failed her chemistry test - maybe it’s time she gave up the Mustangs and concentrated on more serious academic work. Bella’s desperate to ensure she doesn’t lose her friend on the team, so she asks Marnie to let Anusha help with tactics. Maybe if Anusha sees how she’s the best at soccer strategy, she won’t leave. And now that the Mustangs have made it into the top eight, they need all the help they can get. But as Anusha throws herself into developing a dossier of skills and plays for the team, Bella gets more and more concerned about her perfectionist friend, pushing herself to be the best at every thing she does. As Anusha unravels, her tactical recommendations to Marnie split the team apart. She’s focusing a little too closely on all their weaknesses and it’s making them uncomfortable and unsure of their game. It’s clear to the Mustangs that Nush is taking this perfection thing way too far and she’s headed for a meltdown. They abandon her tactics on the pitch and play their own game, their way. Anusha is crushed and rejected. It’s down to Bella to stick by her and reassure her friend that sometimes it’s OK to not be OK.

Episode 11 - The Feels

The Mustangs have made it to the final eight, but Marnie’s in a slump - Anusha’s tactics divided the team, Lara’s lecturing her on leadership, Liv is giving her the stink-eye and even Gabe is sick of being used as a shoulder to cry on when he wants to be so much more. Could life suck any harder? Marnie ‘girls up’ to a somewhat hostile team. It takes all her guts to tell the Mustangs she made a mistake but now it’s time to move on. They have the semis this weekend - who is up for a hardcore training and bonding regime, Mustangs style? The girls throw themselves into it and although they gently try to encourage Anusha to get back in the game, she pushes them away. She doesn’t need anyone feeling sorry for her. Bella is desperate for Anusha to return to the team - Is Nush just going to quit every time things get messy? Meantime, Liv tells Marnie how impressed she is with Marnie’s captaincy these days. And before she’s realised, Liv has gone the blurt and tells Marnie that she’s just so glad she fixed the vote count and threw the captaincy Marnie’s way. She can’t think of anyone else who could have lead them into the semis. Marnie’s jaw drops. Sometimes Liv wishes that her mouth had a rewind button!

Episode 12 - Slay

You’ll never believe it - but the Mustangs have gone and won their semi final! But their celebrations are short-lived when they realise they will have to face their nemesis in the final - the mighty mighty Wildcats. In an attempt to get some tips about how to skill up, the Mustangs go and spy on the Wildcats’ regime. But their opposition’s brutal training drills only serve to intimidate them. The Wildcats are like robots - how can the Mustangs even get close? At the club presentation night, their confidence is shaken further. While the boys’ team is feted and applauded, our girls are miserably sat at a table at the back by the men’s toilets, with no one even acknowledging their groundbreaking success this year. With far more sizzling under the surface than just soccer, Gabe and Marnie argue - it doesn't matter how Marnie’s team does, no one cares about the girls. When even Liv begins to doubt that they’ve got what it takes, Marnie has to pull her team together. There is no point trying to be like the Wildcats, or be like the boys. They are the Mustangs and they all bring their own amazing, distinctive skills to this team. Let’s go to work, Mustangs! Next day pitch side and the Mustangs and the Wildcats run on for the final to end all finals. Michaela and Marnie stare each other down and as the whistle blows, Marnie turns to the Wildcats captain - We’re not who you think we are.

Episode 13 - Mustangs Forever

The nail biter of the final and the Mustangs are 2-0 up. But Liv is jumpy in goal and in a panic, she concedes two goals to the Wildcats and subs herself off. Under pressure in her first game back, Anusha fouls the opposition. It’s a sloppy slide tackle, not intended to be violent, but Gabe (the ref) immediately blows it up. Emotions explode in an already tense match and parents begin arguing furiously on the sidelines. As things get badly out of hand, Gabe is forced to blow his whistle and abandon the game. Disaster! Despite it being 2-2 when the game was called off, with the Wildcats ahead on points in the league, they will claim the title this season. Marnie and the Mustangs are gutted. Some are unsure of whether they will play next year. Even Ruby is non committal. It looks like after only one season, the Mustangs might be over. Seeing how down she is, Danny encourages Marnie to girl up. The story doesn’t have to end this way. Marnie approaches Michaela with a plan. If the Wildcats want to beat the Mustangs fair and square, then they should have a rematch. No parents this time. Game on! The teams head to the park and the ‘Stangs are shocked and betrayed to see that now that the season is over, Ruby has is finally free to defect to the Wildcats. After a tense match, Liv nervously prepares to face her down when Ruby takes the penalty for the Wildcats. But Liv is focused and saves the kick, clasping it in her arms. Final whistle and Mustangs win, Mustangs actually win! And when Michaela won’t even cheer the winning team, can Ruby already see that she made the wrong choice?
