Episode 1 - Episode 1Germany, 1979. When a bomb goes off in the diplomatic quarter of Bonn, senior Israeli intelligence agent Martin Kurtz flies in to investigate. A series of similarly deadly attacks targeting prominent Jewish figures across Europe have been carried out in recent weeks, and Kurtz now believes there is a Palestinian revolutionary at the heart of this pattern. Kurtz sets in motion a brilliant and elaborate plan to catch the kingpin, Khalil... Meanwhile in London, passionate young actress Charlie is treading the boards of pub theatres and struggling to land a breakthrough part. She drifts from one bad relationship to another, unable to find her purpose in life. When an anonymous benefactor sends Charlie and her theatre troupe on a rehearsal jaunt to Greece, she feels renewed vigour. But a working holiday soon becomes a journey of discovery when she encounters a mysterious stranger on the beach. She names him Joseph for his 'coat of many colours'. Despite her better judgement, Charlie cannot help but be drawn to his aloof demeanor and she is unable to shake the feeling that she's seen him somewhere before... They embark on a whirlwind romance, but all is not what it seems. Whilst Kurtz makes inroads into the network responsible for the bombing in Germany, the tangled threads of the stories weave their way together until Charlie finds herself at the centre of Kurtz's international espionage operation...

Episode 2 - Episode 2Charlie's world shifts when she learns that the mysterious 'Joseph' is really an intelligence officer named Gadi Becker. Becker delivers Charlie to his superior Kurtz, and the wily spymaster offers her the role of a lifetime in the 'theatre of the real'; to infiltrate a dangerous militia cell. Kurtz masterfully coordinates Charlie's recruitment. He reveals her secrets, challenging her passionately held political views and the stories she tells about her father and her past. Having exposed her lies, Kurtz is far from displeased; Charlie's imagination and versatility as a performer make her perfect for the role Kurtz has in mind. After Charlie's gruelling night of questioning, Becker gently urges Charlie to commit to the role and the operation. Charlie is drawn to the opportunity to fulfil her potential and make a difference, but she is also increasingly beguiled and confused by this man, desperate to understand who he really is. Kurtz holds one of the perpetrators of the German bombing captive; a Palestinian named Michel. Meanwhile, Becker plays Michel's persona with Charlie, in order to create the appearance of a love affair between the revolutionary and the actress. Becker teaches Charlie the intimate details of Michel's life and together they leave a pan-European paper trail of this fictional romance. Through this elaborate subterfuge, Kurtz's team hope to flush out the key players that Michel works for. When Charlie proves herself an able pupil, Becker offers her a chance to show her true commitment to their cause, but Kurtz realises that Michel is leading them into a trap.

Episode 3 - Episode 3Alone, undercover and continuing to pose as Michel's lover, Charlie drives his red Mercedes loaded with explosives. Meanwhile, Kurtz masterfully extracts operational details about the drop-off from his prisoner, Michel. Charlie makes her first inroads as a false insert in Michel's very real militia cell. Working with Becker and Kurtz's team at arm's length, Charlie sets out to deliver the Mercedes to Michel's people in Austria. She must hold her nerve and draw on all her improvisational prowess in order to prove herself to the ever-watchful revolutionaries. Following the operation in Austria, Charlie is taken to Germany where she comes face to face with the real Michel. She is tormented by guilt over what will happen to Michel and feels increasingly conflicted about her feelings towards Becker. Her mind swims with differing truths as Michel and Becker become tangled in Charlie's mind. Charlie is ordered by Kurtz to return to London and wait for Michel's people to reach out to her. With Michel's network sure to notice he is missing soon, Kurtz convinces Becker that the only way to deal with Michel is to stage his death. Oblivious and alone, Charlie struggles to reconnect with her old life and fears for what her new existence entails.

Episode 4 - Episode 4In London, Kurtz's team prepare for the next stage of the operation as Charlie waits and wonders if Michel's people will make contact. Becker finds Charlie in a state of tortured limbo and teaches her to shoot a pistol, as Michel would have done. He tells Charlie about Michel's older brother Khalil, explaining that Michel only tells a trusted few about his elusive brother and leader amongst their people. When Charlie returns from a performance with her theatre troupe, she finds a note left by Michel's team, making contact. Michel's Swiss lawyer, Anton Mesterbein, arrives and demands Charlie come with him to a remote cottage, where she is greeted by Helga, an unhinged radical. Helga and Mesterbein interrogate Charlie to test whether she and her affair with Michel are genuine. Charlie's performance must now hold up under intense pressure. When Helga reveals to Charlie that Michel has been found dead, Charlie almost falters but manages to mask her horror that she is now complicit in a murder. She inwardly fumes that Becker has kept this from her. Charlie's knowledge of Khalil helps her convince Helga that her relationship with Michel was real. As Charlie descends deeper into the rabbit hole, she feels torn about the choice she's being asked to make and the human cost of Kurtz's operation. Kurtz tries to convince Charlie that her commitment is for the greater good and she is the lynchpin that can take them to the targets they have been hunting for years. Charlie's decision to cross the point of no return will ultimately depend on Becker's ability to persuade her, but her choice is complicated when she and Becker finally succumb to the attraction they feel for one another. Will Charlie part with Becker to join Michel's people as a spy, or stop short before it is too late?

Episode 5 - Episode 5Escorted by Helga, Charlie travels to Lebanon where she is delivered into the hands of Michel and Khalil's sister, Fatmeh. Fatmeh tests Charlie's conviction to revolution and her love for Michel, before abandoning her at a militia training camp. Charlie is thrown together with other westerners who want to fight for the Palestinian cause. Trading ideas for arms, Charlie goes through a gruelling test as she is trained in weapons and guerrilla tactics by the harsh and unknowable drill sergeant, Captain Tayeh. She comes to blows with an American recruit, Halloran, who's been driven to despair in the camp, unable to leave yet deemed unfit to fight. When Halloran starts to believe that Charlie is a spy, she is forced to decide whether to sacrifice him in order to save herself. In London, Kurtz's team try to work out where Khalil's next attack will take place. Kurtz is in a race against time with his superiors who are pushing for military action against the Palestinian revolutionaries. Becker cracks the code of the cell's communications and becomes convinced that Khalil intends to strike next on British soil. As Charlie wins Fatmeh's trust, she is brought into the inner circle of their refugee camp. Charlie cannot help but feel deep sympathy towards Fatmeh's cause and the desperate struggle they face. When Charlie returns to England it appears she's on a mission at Fatmeh's command. Kurtz and Becker do not know if she is coming back as one of them or if she has turned against them.

Episode 6 - Episode 6Khalil takes Charlie to an isolated house where he builds a bomb for the planned attack on Professor Minkel; an outspoken academic. Meanwhile, Kurtz and Becker are concerned about Charlie's state of mind and where her allegiances lie. In her greatest test so far in the 'theatre of the real', Charlie delivers the bomb to the university moments before Professor Minkel is due to speak. Kurtz and Becker work with British Intelligence Officer Picton to try to avert bloodshed and turn the situation to their advantage. When Kurtz discovers that Charlie is working with Khalil, he sees the opportunity to help Charlie rise to the top of Khalil's network alongside the great man himself. Finally, an agent on the inside. But having grown so close to those she is tasked with betraying, will Charlie bend to the will of Kurtz and Becker at the last? And can Kurtz and his team outsmart Khalil, the genius that he has been chasing for so many years? Torn between love of Becker, respect and sympathy for Khalil, and a wavering belief in the righteousness of her quest, Charlie's identity is tested to its very limit in a nail-biting season finale.
