Episode 1 - Episode 1Pius XIII is in a coma. And the church, under threat from sex scandals, idolizers and possible terrorist attacks, cannot afford to remain without a Pontiff. Cardinal Voiello decides to run in the Conclave elections, but realizing he risks losing against the loathed Cardinal Hernandez, he supports the election of Tommaso Viglietti, believing him to be meek and easy to manipulate. In fact, the new Pope, with the name of Francis II, opens the doors of the Vatican to refugees and liquidates the riches of the Church to donate the money to people in need.

Episode 2 - Episode 2After the failure of his maneuvers to become Pope, Secretary of State Voiello seeks a Papal candidate who champions moderation. He finds one in Sir John Brannox, a great theorist of the middle way, the ideal Pope. Voiello flies to England with a small delegation to meet him in his castle and try to convince him. Sir John is a charismatic intellectual and aristocrat, but he’s also fragile, full of doubts, enigmatic, secretive and reluctant to accept the prestigious proposal. Voiello has to flaunt all his remarkable talent for strategy and persuasion.

Episode 3 - Episode 3Voiello’s persuasiveness has worked. Sir John accepts the candidature and leaves for the Vatican. Everything seems to be going according to plan, but the Secretary of State couldn’t have predicted the moves undertaken by Cardinal Spalletta.

Episode 4 - Episode 4Nuns are on strike. John Paul III travels to Venice to pay a visit to Pius XIII, while the sect that idolizes Belardo grows in number. Meanwhile, tragic events in Lourdes require the presence of the new Pope.

Episode 5 - Episode 5John Paul III receives Sharon Stone, who asks him to authorize gay marriage for Catholics. The actress also suggests that the Church should commission works of art, like in a new Renaissance. Meanwhile, the potential implications of the Pope’s Lourdes speech are being discussed in the Vatican. Voiello takes refuge with Girolamo in the Apennines, while the Pope becomes closer and closer to Sofia: he confesses that he means to divert attention from the endless sex scandals devastating the Vatican by declaring his support of marriages for priests, whether straight or gay. She’s surprised but intrigued by the idea. Meanwhile, the health conditions of Pius XIII change unexpectedly.

Episode 6 - Episode 6Sofia is approached by an eerie-looking priest who directs her to a small villa just outside the city, one which her husband often visits. Sofia thus discovers that Tomas, Spalletta and the Italian Minister for the Economy take part in certain “parties”. Sofia mentions it to Voiello, who is confident the Pope will intervene. The result, however, is not what he was hoping for and John Paul III takes a harsh decision. Meanwhile, Pope Belardo’s sighing is becoming heavier and heavier and the Vatican’s attempts to stop the radio broadcasts devoted to Lenny’s breathing like in a loathsome reality show have no effect. John Paul III appears before TV cameras for the long-awaited interview, but things take the wrong turn.

Episode 7 - Episode 7Voiello has bowed out while the policies of his successor Assente undermine the credibility of the Church and the terrorist threat becomes more and more menacing.

Episode 8 - Episode 8Voiello discovers the secret of John Paul III. Meanwhile, Lenny Belardo has secretly returned to the Vatican and Voiello, thanks to the striking nuns, acts out his plan to regain power.

Episode 9 - Episode 9A group of terrorists has taken a priest and six students hostage in Ventotene. An event that finally leads Pius XIII and John Paul III to confronting each other.
