Episode 1 - The Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories

It’s 1963. JFK has been assassinated. The world has changed... and tremors are being felt even all the way in Ballarat. Jean Blake is still adjusting to life after her husband Lucien’s disappearance eight months earlier, when she’s unexpectedly drawn into the investigation of a pair of bizarre murders. Both cases seem linked to a series of newspaper articles recently published in The Courier about Ballarat’s most infamous unsolved mysteries. No one knows the town’s history better than Jean, and she’s determined to help, despite pushback from Chief Superintendent Matthew Lawson.

  

Episode 1 - Series 1, Episode 1: Still Waters

When a young woman’s body is found floating in Lake Wendouree, Dr Blake can’t help digging deeper into the mystery. There is more to the case than meets the eye. Blake is certain the deceased girl - a runaway from the local reform school - was dead before she was dumped in the water. The autopsy proves his theory but finding the killer is more complicated.

  

Episode 2 - Series 1, Episode 2: The Greater Good

On the eve of Anzac Day, Dr Blake bumps into a former British Army colleague at the police station, Major Derek Alderton. Alderton is in town, trying to track down two army deserters believed to be hiding out in the area. But before they can reminisce, Dr Blake is called to the morgue where the body of the attendant, Bert Prentice, lies with shocking injuries in a pool of blood.

  

Episode 3 - Series 1, Episode 3: Death of a Travelling Salesman

When a travelling salesman dies in a single car accident on a quiet country road, Chief Superintendent Lawson labels it a drink driving case. But when Constable Parks reveals the corpse’s face was blue, Dr Blake is intrigued. Although the victim’s clothes reek of alcohol, Blake concludes that the salesman was not drunk and certainly died before the crash. But how? And why is the face blue?

  

Episode 4 - Series 1, Episode 4: Brotherly Love

When a delirious prisoner on death row tells Dr Blake he is innocent of the police shooting for which he is soon to hang, Blake is stunned – and believes him. But no-one else seems interested in uncovering the truth. Recidivist criminal Sean McBride is accused of shooting a policeman, Clive Cooper. Sealing his fate on death row, Sean originally pleaded guilty to the crime and refused to defend himself in court.

  

Episode 5 - Series 1, Episode 5: Hearts and Flowers

When the Begonia Festival’s head judge is found incinerated in his own glasshouse, all eyes turn to two feuding contestants. An airmail letter arrives from Singapore for Dr Blake, giving him hope about finding his missing wife and daughter whom he hasn’t seen for 17 years.

  

Episode 6 - Series 1, Episode 6: If the Shoe Fits

The death of a migrant factory foreman initially looks like an industrial accident. Dr Blake digs deeper, revealing a hideous string of crimes and the ugly side of post war Australia. Meanwhile, Jean receives a marriage proposal.

  

Episode 7 - Series 1, Episode 7: Bedlam

A psychiatric inmate is found with a murder weapon in hand at the scene of a brutal murder. The inmate also confesses but Dr Blake doubts the case is quite as neat as it appears.

  

Episode 8 - Series 1, Episode 8: Game of Champions

Dr Blake is drawn into the new world of TV when contestants in a successful TV quiz show start dying. Blake turns to Jean, Mattie and Danny to help him make sense of the baffling case. He gets them to role-play a whodunit version of the quiz show and gets a surprising answer.

  

Episode 9 - Series 1, Episode 9: All That Glitters

A prospector announces to a crowded pub that he has struck gold and later that night is found at the bottom of his mine shaft after showing off the nugget in the pub. The location of the murder triggers distressing war memories for Dr Blake.

  

Episode 10 - Series 1, Episode 10: Someone's Son, Someone's Daughter

The suicide of the local hospital’s first female doctor shocks the community. Dr Blake suspects foul play and sets out to find the murderer amongst the staff and board of the hospital. Meanwhile, another letter from Singapore arrives for Lucien. It takes him days to work up the courage to open it. His reaction to the news about his missing wife and daughter shocks Jean, Mattie and Danny.

  

Episode 11 - Series 2, Episode 1: The Heart of the Matter

Blake returns from China, and finds himself thrown straight into a murder investigation: the newly elected Mayor of Ballarat is found dead at the bottom of the Town Hall steps. But threads of betrayal, adultery and double dealing lead him to some high and low places, and Jean - kept in the dark - worries for him.

  

Episode 12 - Series 2, Episode 2: The Food Of Love

Doctor Blake must unravel the mystery of the death of an up-and-coming rock’n’roll star, stabbed after a sell out hometown performance. While Blake investigates, Lawson must try to keep the peace as the town is divided, and Danny encounters feisty young almoner Rose.

  

Episode 13 - Series 2, Episode 3: A Foreign Field

When the body of a well-dressed man is found dead on a picnic blanket in Ballarat’s botanical gardens, Blake determines the cause of death as cyanide poisoning. But when attempts to identify the man fail, Blake is left to rely on a mysterious clue trail to attempt to uncover the identity of his killer.

  

Episode 14 - Series 2, Episode 4: Smoke And Mirrors

Pedestrians walk Lydiard Street on a busy Saturday night and are horrified to discover a man has fallen from the Colonists’ Club and landed on the footpath in front of them. After surveying the balcony Blake realises the railing is too high for this ‘fall’ to be an accident. Meanwhile Lawson is caught up in a hit and run involving one of his officers. The only clue linking both incidents is a pouch of brandless tobacco.

  

Episode 15 - Series 2, Episode 5: Crossing The Line

Cinemagoers hurry to safety after a fire breaks out in the projection booth. Adam Summers has burned to death and every employee and patron in the cinema is a suspect. Meanwhile, Mattie tells Blake about the wedding of the year - Amelia Yorke is marrying wealthy bachelor Vincent Foster. But when Blake discovers the cinema fire was intended to destroy the films and not Adam he looks to the wedding party for answers.

  

Episode 16 - Series 2, Episode 6: Mortal Coil

An extra body is found in a coffin just before it’s about to be buried. It turns out to be the body of a local rag and bone man - but why would someone kill him, and go to such elaborate measures to get rid of the body? Soon, Doctor Blake realises that he’s been asking the wrong questions - there’s more than one body waiting to be discovered. A missing man may even still be alive, but can Blake solve the puzzle in time to save him? But finding the answer involves grappling with his own mortality, and Jean worries as his behaviour becomes more and more out of control.

  

Episode 17 - Series 2, Episode 7: The Silence

Doctor Blake must unravel the mystery of the death of a primary school Principal, while helping Lawson face some ghosts from his past. Blake and Lawson discover that the dead man was well liked but had many secrets - and left behind a string of women with motives to kill.

  

Episode 18 - Series 2, Episode 8: The Ties Of The Past

Art student and life model, Vanessa Mackay, is brutally killed and her keys are used to steal a painting from the Ballarat Art Gallery. But when the stolen painting is dumped and the thief becomes the victim of a hit and run, Doctor Blake realizes what the perpetrator was really after - a painting by his mother, Genevieve Etienne. While unravelling the current mystery, Blake also uncovers insights into the past that reveal he is indeed his mother’s son.

  

Episode 19 - Series 2, Episode 9: The Sky Is Empty

When beloved Father Morton is found dead in the confessional on a Sunday morning, Blake discovers his death was no accident. As he investigates which of the parishioners might have motive to kill their own priest, Blake also is forced to examine his own beliefs in the almighty, and how they conflict with those of the people he cares about most, especially Jean.

  

Episode 20 - Series 2, Episode 10: An Invincible Summer

Ballarat is in an uproar, when the bodies of the most beloved family in town, the Dennison’s, are found murdered in their own home on the morning of the Daylesford to Ballarat cross country race. With the town in a panic, it’s exactly the wrong time for Jean’s ne’er-do-well son Jack to turn up. As Blake investigates he discovers this revered family is not quite as perfect as everyone thought.

  

Episode 21 - Series 3, Episode 1: Head of the Lake

When a Ballarat College schoolboy-rower wins a race on Lake Wendouree, only to drown after being ceremonially tossed in the lake, his mother asks Doctor Blake to find the truth behind her son's death. But Blake discovers that the truth is murkier, and that the boy was not the small-town sporting hero everyone (his mother included) thinks he is.

  

Episode 22 - Series 3, Episode 2: My Brother’s Keeper

The whole town is in preparation for the annual Ballarat Agricultural Fair. But tragedy strikes when a farmer is found dead at the bottom of the cow pen. Locals blame livestock for trampling the man but Doctor Blake isn’t convinced. While Jean deals with the anniversary of her husband’s death, Blake investigates the murder of the farmer and soon opens the door to the complex world of agriculture, gambling and emotional entanglements.

  

Episode 23 - Series 3, Episode 3: This Time and This Place

When social worker Emma Keneally is shot on Bonfire Night, and Aboriginal teen Winston Cummings is caught holding a smoking gun, it seems an open and shut case. But when Blake investigates further he’ll find that not only does Winston seem innocent, but that Emma may not even have been the murderer’s target. To discover more he and the police will need to dig deeper into Ballarat’s notorious Aboriginal orphanage, and into the racism buried at the heart of the community.

  

Episode 24 - Series 3, Episode 4: By the Southern Cross

Tensions are stirred when police break up students celebrating the Eureka stockade anniversary. Emotions then spill over at the local pub that night. When student leader Des Sommerville is found dead suspicion falls on a local. But after Dr Blake finds Des' body was moved post mortem, suspicion shifts to the students and communist party members. Minister for Industry and Commerce, Martin O'Brien is in town to launch an initiative, and has an ultimatum for his daughter, Mattie.

  

Episode 25 - Series 3, Episode 5: A Night to Remember

Jacqueline Maddern collapses after a charity performance at the Colonist’s Club and Blake suspects she’s been poisoned. He suggests to Munro that the Club be locked down to prevent the murderer leaving. Munro obliges but includes Blake in the lock-down. Blake has to find the killer with little to help him but his wits and his knowledge of human nature.

  

Episode 26 - Series 3, Episode 6: Women and Children

When a surgeon is found dead on the operating table at Ballarat Hospital, Blake is drawn into a maze of sexual politics and revenge. But as the clues mount up, Blake finds himself undermined by Chief Superintendent Munro, who has an agenda of his own. Meanwhile, Jean faces her own dilemma. The consequences of her decision will be far-reaching, but Blake is too busy fighting his many battles to notice.

  

Episode 27 - Series 3, Episode 7: Room Without a View

When Henry King dies in suspicious circumstances at the Royal Hotel, Blake is on the case. Suspicions are raised as to how someone entered the locked hotel room. Blake decides to spend the night in the same hotel room only to discover that the key to the mystery is buried in a large painting on the wall. Meanwhile Jean has a big announcement for the household that will affect her relationship with Blake for good. And while Lawson’s return is a happy event for Blake, Chief Superintendent Munro continues to come down hard on both he and Lawson.

  

Episode 28 - Series 3, Episode 8: Another Country

When a magistrate is found poisoned, the clues point towards various pillars of the town, all of them associated with the Masonic Lodge. But as Blake digs deeper, he finds disturbing echoes in the death of his own mother, forty years earlier. And while Blake inches towards an answer, Jean prepares to say goodbye, in preparation for moving to Adelaide and her own family, and out of Blake’s life.

  

Episode 29 - Series 4, Episode 1: The Open Road

Blake returns home to Ballarat without Jean, to find himself thrown straight into another murder investigation; Ballarat is hosting a stopover in a round-Australia race, and a young mechanic has been found dead underneath another competitor’s car. There’s pressure from business to wrap up the investigation quickly, but Blake has dealt with that kind of interference before. But when Lawson is run down, Blake finds himself facing a very different case. And Jean’s absence – and the appearance of an intrusive reporter – only makes things more complicated.

  

Episode 30 - Series 4, Episode 2: Golden Years

Blake meets new Chief Superintendent Frank Carlyle, and helps him investigate the apparent drowning of prominent businessman Reg Foster. Blake soon establishes that Reg didn’t drown where he was found and begins the hunt for the murder site, hoping that will reveal his killer. Meanwhile Carlyle grills several suspects from the corrupt councilman to the aggrieved lover to bereaved family members. But it’s only when Blake eventually finds the site of Reg’s murder that the pieces begin to fall into place…

  

Episode 31 - Series 4, Episode 3: Lucky Numbers

When the wife of the winner of the first ever lottery is kidnapped and held for ransom, Blake is drawn into a world of state-sponsored gambling and tabloid newspaper reporting. Greed, envy and social mobility are the buzzwords of the new age. Meanwhile marriage is in the air for Mattie and Joe, and maybe even for Jean and Lucien. But will Blake have the time to propose before a figure from his dark past arrives?

  

Episode 32 - Series 4, Episode 4: Against the Odds

A local jockey dies on the racecourse at Ballarat Racetrack the day after his very last win, surrounded by a bevy of nefarious characters. Complicating matters for the Doctor is that the deceased is Agnes Clasby's beloved nephew, Alexander. What had Alexander gotten himself involved in at the track? And Blake’s home life is been thrown into chaos by the arrival of Mei Lin; the wife he thought had died almost 15 years ago during the fall of Singapore...

  

Episode 33 - Series 4, Episode 5: The Price of Love

When a young soldier is killed during a routine training exercise, Doctor Blake finds himself at the Ballarat Military Base and again facing his old nemesis Major Derek Alderton. Meanwhile, Blake is distracted by a missing persons case which is looking more like a murder. Blake soon finds the answers in a place he least expects.

  

Episode 34 - Series 4, Episode 6: A Difficult Lie

When a reporter’s body is discovered on the 18th hole at the local golf course, Blake is called in to investigate whether an errant ball killed the man, or whether he was the victim of foul play. He’ll soon discover a web of intrigue, embezzlement and blackmail leading back to The Courier newspaper, and the new Editor, Edward Tyneman.

  

Episode 35 - Series 4, Episode 7: For Whom the Bells Tolls

An investigation into what initially appears to be a routine suicide becomes personal when Cec Drury begs Blake to find out who really killed his younger brother, Rod. When it becomes clear he’s dealing with a murder, Blake's investigation uncovers an insurance scam, a second murder and a dark secret at the heart of the Ballarat fire station and it’s volunteer fire service. Meanwhile Jean may have discovered a secret about Mei Lin that will call into question everything she’s told Blake since her arrival into their lives...

  

Episode 36 - Series 4, Episode 8: The Visible World

Tensions have reached boiling point between Doctor Blake and Major Alderton - Blake now knows Alderton has been using Mei Lin in a psychological game of cat and mouse against him. So when Alderton is found dead at Ballarat Observatory during a once in a century eclipse, and the police learn Blake was at the scene, and fled, the hunt for the killer turns back onto Blake himself...
