Season 4 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Episode 1

All is not well in the Marsden household as David and Karen struggle to come to terms with David's infidelity. Adam persuades him the only way to get back into Karen's good books and the marital bed is by becoming the man Karen always wished he were. Unhappily for David, his efforts only serve to make their marriage more fraught than ever. Meanwhile Adam and Rachel find the happiness of their newly married life overshadowed by the spectre of Rachel's infertility. They both seek to fill the gaping hole in their life by throwing themselves into other activities. It doesn't work and they finally admit their longing for a child and take the momentous decision to adopt. Pete and Jen are back together, their happiness apparently sealed by the discovery that Jen's pregnant. Pete's over the moon about the baby; his only source of antagonism is her enthusiasm for her new job. However their bickering is soon cut short when they discover at Jen's 12 week scan that the baby has died in utero.

                                                                                                                          

Episode 2 - Episode 2

David and Karen seek to solve their problems in two very different ways - David by turning to therapy, Karen by turning to drink. Just when David feels he's made a real breakthrough with his therapist, Karen tells him she wants him to move out. Adam and Rachel embark upon the long and fraught adoption process, Adam does not help their chances by acting like a Neanderthal at an adoption meeting. Meanwhile, Adam and Rachel's secure existence appears under threat by the appearance of Adam's ex-girlfriend, Jane Fitzpatrick, in Manchester. Jenny finds that the loss of her baby only serves to emphasise the cracks in her relationship with Pete. Her misgivings come to a head when her boss offers her a job in New York. Pete refuses to countenance the idea of moving Stateside. He is heartbroken when Jenny announces she's going anyway.

                                                                                                                                

Episode 3 - Episode 3

David, left with nowhere to turn, finds himself in the unhappy position of becoming Pete's roommate. Pete tries to bury his unhappiness at Jen's departure by bringing a string of anonymous women home. It doesn't work and he is finally forced to confront the reality of life on his own. Karen meanwhile throws herself into life with a frenzied vigour and is out partying every night with Jo, a workmate of Rachel's. She is finally forced to face up to the fact that she has a drink problem when she crashes the car while apparently over the limit. She decides it's time to get professional help and, on her first visit to the therapist, is amazed to bump into David. Finally realising how much David is trying to make amends for his past mistakes, they start to rebuild their marriage. Adam and Rachel find every aspect of their lives under scrutiny by their adoption worker and the process begins to take its toll on their relationship. Adam finds Jane Fitzpatrick a sympathetic ear but she wants to be more than good friends.

                                                                                                                          

Episode 4 - Episode 4

Pete's just getting used to sharing his house with David when another houseguest arrives - his mother. Her incessant fussing drives him round the bend until he finds why she's really come to stay - she doesn't think she can look after herself anymore. David and Karen discover their marital difficulties have been taking their toll on Josh at his school parent's evening. David believes there's only one solution - send Josh to a private school. Karen cuts a deal with David - leave Josh at his current school and he can move back home. Adam and Rachel are thrilled to find out they have been approved to adopt a child. They are matched with a seven-year-old girl called Laura who they agree to adopt. Shortly after meeting Laura for the first time, a real bombshell is dropped - Rachel is four months pregnant.

                                                                                                                          

Episode 5 - Episode 5

Adam and Rachel are distraught to learn their adoption agency will not allow them to go ahead with adopting Laura now that Rachel is pregnant. They decide to challenge the decision in court when Laura's foster mother intervenes - they should let Laura find another family. Heartbroken, they agree. Pete finally rid of David and his mother finds himself with another houseguest - Jo. However his feelings for Jo soon develop into more than straightforward friendship, but she has her sights on another. Karen returns to the workplace after meeting Mark, a publisher, at a drinks party. Karen finds she has plenty in common with Mark - he too is an alcoholic.

                                                                                                                             

Episode 6 - Episode 6

Rachel has gone to visit Jenny in New York and Adam, frightened by the prospect of imminent fatherhood, decides to have one last hurrah. However it all gets a bit out of hand when he finds himself being propositioned by a very attractive woman. It is Karen's birthday and David is determined to find Karen the perfect present. He settles upon a racehorse and arranges for all the gang to go and see it race at Chester. Little does he know that Chester becomes the perfect setting for Karen's relationship with Mark to assume a new footing. Pete and Jo find themselves becoming closer and closer. One problem stands in their way - Jo's boyfriend Suggs.

                                                                                                                             

Episode 7 - Episode 7

Adam is amazed to see how big Rachel has become while she's been away. They disagree over the baby's name and Rachel is hurt by Adam's sudden loss of interest in sex. Karen embarks upon a full-blooded affair with Mark. She's in love with him and hard as she might try, she can't put a stop to their burgeoning relationship. David, meanwhile, is consumed with work. He has been handed Operation Poisoned Chalice - to recommend substantial job cuts within his department.Pete and Jo finally get it together. There is only one problem - sex. Pete, consumed by anxiety that Jo will go off him when she sees him naked, keeps on delaying the moment when they finally consummate their relationship. Jo takes his reluctance to mean that he doesn't fancy her. Then she receives a blow - her visa has expired and she's got to return to Australia. Pete takes her to the airport. It's only after she's left that Rachel throws light on what happened. Pete rushes to the airport and gets the next plane to Sydney. Jo, bowled over by the romance of his gesture, proposes to him.

                                                                                            

Episode 8 - Episode 8

The gang heads for Australia to attend Pete and Jo's wedding. Rachel is particularly excited about the trip as it'll be the first time she's seen her younger sister who lives in Sydney for ages. David meanwhile is determined to give Karen the holiday of a lifetime to seal their apparent rapprochement once and for all. Karen sees the holiday in very different terms - Mark's pushing her to leave David and the time has come for her to make a choice. Adam has his own agenda - he's convinced Pete's making a big mistake and intends to put a stop to the wedding. His determination is matched by that of Jo's father, Rod, who is convinced that Pete's after one thing alone - his money.
