Season 7 Episode Guide

Episode 1 - Causa Mortis

In this ripped-from-the-headlines plot, Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) investigate the carjacking/murder of a young mother who leaves behind a husband and four small children. The case seems cut and dry when they discover the woman covertly recorded her own murder on a pocket tape recorder, even getting the murderer to say his name. When the tape and murder weapon get thrown out of court on a technicality, McCoy (Sam Waterston) and his new partner, Asst. D.A. Jamie Ross (Carey Lowell, 'Leaving Las Vegas'), must pull out all the stops to keep a cold-blooded murderer from going free.

Episode 2 - I.D.

The discovery of a naked dead woman in a high-rise elevator sends Briscoe and Curtis on a classic who-dunnit. Before they can solve the crime they have to identify the victim. In the end they learn the woman was killed for her identity - by her own sister. McCoy and Ross must battle a lecherous and vindictive judge over two separate trials to finally bring this bizarre case to a close. Jerry Adler (Manhattan Murder Mystery) and Aida Turturro (The Sopranos) guest stars.

Episode 3 - Good Girl

The murder of a black college student leads Briscoe and Curtis to the doorstep of a 'good' Italian girl who claims she would have nothing to do with a black man. When her fingerprints turn up in the dead man's apartment she changes her story and says she was raped and had to kill the boy in self-defense. McCoy tries to prove otherwise, but pressure from the murder victim's parents forces him to go to trial sooner than expected. His job gets harder when the defense claims reverse discrimination and puts Van Buren on the stand claiming she was guilty of over zealously pursuing a white girl for prosecution.

Episode 4 - Survivor

The robbery and murder of an antiques and coin dealer leads detectives to a fellow coin dealer. With only circumstantial evidence, Ross and McCoy further investigate the stolen coins, tracing them to another of the victim's clients. Karen Allen (The Perfect Storm) guest stars.

Episode 5 - Corruption

A fellow detective claims he shot a suspected drug dealer in self-defense, but none of his fellow officers can corroborate his story. Skipp Sudduth (Third Watch) makes a guest appearance.

Episode 6 - Double Blind

The shooting death of a likeable janitor leaves no visible evidence and no motive. The only peculiarity about the killing is that the murderer used mercury-tipped homemade bullets - which leads detectives to turn to an aging criminal for help.

Episode 7 - Deadbeat

A car broker's murder reveals that he was a deadbeat dad, but was his ex-wife or ex-father-in-law to blame for his death? When the father-in-law refuses to plea bargain, McCoy grows suspicious of his self-defense claim. Jerry Stiller (The King of Queens) guest stars.

Episode 8 - Family Business

The murder of the president of New York's most popular (and expensive) department store leads Briscoe and Curtis to two feuding daughters of the store's elderly owner, in this modern day 'King Lear.' McCoy and Ross try to play the estranged sisters off each other for a conviction, however they might be too tricky for their own good as they are out-maneuvered at every turn by the family patriarch.

The shooting of a black community leader is linked to a two-year old crime. Briscoe and Curtis butt heads with the FBI during their investigation which implicates an FBI informant. Episode 10 - Legacy

The investigation of a seemingly random shooting leads Briscoe and Curtis to a brazen, cold-blooded hitman, and the only way to bring him down is for Briscoe to pose as his competition. The case is complicated during trial when we learn that the victim was shot as revenge for a murder he committed himself just three years ago. Bradley White (Pay It Forward) and Frances Sternhagen (ER) guest star.

Episode 11 - Menace

An apparent suicide turns out to be murder as Briscoe and Curtis investigate the death of a woman who jumped from a bridge (in front of numerous bystanders) to avoid a crazed attacker with whom she was apparently involved in a fender-bender. When they are unable to convict, McCoy and Ross dig deeper and discover that the 'accident' might not have been so accidental after all. Meanwhile, Detective Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) is tossed out of his house after admitting to his wife that he had an affair.

Episode 12 - Barter

Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) investigate the shooting of a member of a local co-op board and suspect it's a case of mistaken identity. Episode 16 - Turn Around (Trilogy Pt. 2)
